my xbox 360 is only a year old and for the past 2 months i've been facing this problem that is rather irritating...

be it original games, or "others", my console tend to get HANG or showing a pop up msg during gameplay stating "Your Disc is Unreadable or Dirty"...well u know, its the Xbox's dashboard msg that slides out from the right of the screen if u get what i mean...

i've tried cleaning the disc tray with dry cloth, changing the games from the shop and all...but this problem persists still...funny that the msg even popped up on my first time playing my original GTA 4...sad...

for further info, my console was haunted by ROD once, and i've also changed the Display Chip once when i had no visuals showing on the screen...

wonder if any of u peeps had this problem before? appreciate if any of u could enlighten me abit on this matter...

I had the same problem.
When i did some inspection, i figure out it has to do with your disk drive.
When you leave it open the disc tray, the drive will be vulnerable (expose) to Dust.

So you have to send to workshop for some repair or maybe try your luck blowing the dust (Its hard).
Sometimes your Xbox Hardrive (20GB/120GB) might be on a loose so try checking

I had the same problem and the problem is not due to dust or anything. I asked around a lot and a lot of conclusion from reliable source said that ur lens might be dying .... If ur console starts to hang instead saying ur disc is unreadable ... then MR.RRod is coming ... Soon .... but if not ... ur lens saying its going to die.

Mine is cause by a very scratch Gears of War DVD...

i got that problem on GOW before, but it just disappear after cleaning it. but last month.. i got it when trying to play NFS:PS... then after clean the dish.. poooommm... uncle 3rod visited me. damn.

ur lense is affected by 3rod
change the drive...

one thing i'm sure is i do not reject the tray and let it exposed. and i do clean the tray from time to time.

yea, have checked with several shops and the comments i gotten was either;

i) RoD is coming back,

ii)or Lens is dying...

anyone changed the lens before? i heard many places do not have the lens in stock and it requires purchase order. any idea how much it cost? heck, the word "lens" doesnt sound cheap though

ps: hope my console aint dying on me when Metal Gear is released...lol

There is no lens replacing, so far i know is to replace the whole drive.
You will have to search for a drive at the market and ask somebody to help you change it for you.
Oh btw, you cant just replace any drive cause each drive has a unique key to its mobo.

If you want to replace the drive, i can help you with it

Even if you change your lens and drive, you still won't be able to play Metal Gear when it is released. You kinda need to change your console to a different brand

I don't think so. MGS4 is a PS3 exclusive at least for this year

Just wondering, is there any warranty for the lens? Mine just went bust few days ago but the console is below a year old.

I've had the unreadable disc error for about a year haha
Hits the Codemasters games a lot. Dirt & Grid kena. Fable 2 right now also kena.

but funnily enough, GTA4 and very high disc use games like mass effect don't get hit...

I read somewhere that a cause of this problem may be the sudden deceleration of the disc in tray when the unit is powered down. This sudden stop causes something in contact with something else to grind together and it's the fine plastic dust created by this contact that covers the lens. I did use a lens cleaner, and it went back to normal for a while... but I started leaving discs in tray again

as i know that if mod the drive need to update firmware mayb this is causing the unreadable on certain ahem2 games.

i just kene last week... then yesterday while playing Fable2....
there will some weird sound from ur drive... it seem like it cannot read the dvd....

hopefully tonite, it can play Fable2...again T_T

the lense speed also decrease
it means u save ur lense lifetime.
