Marvell Seen As Possible Buyer Of Intel's Altera Unit

Chipmaker Intel (INTC) reportedly plans to sell its programmable chip unit Altera as part of an initiative to turn around its flagging operations. Marvell Technology (MRVL) is seen as a likely buyer. Intel stock and MRVL stock both declined on Tuesday.

On Monday, Reuters reported that Intel Chief Executive Patrick Gelsinger and other key executives are preparing to present to the board a plan to trim assets and reduce costs. Among the plans is the sale of its Altera unit, Reuters said.

Intel also is likely to further reduce its capital spending on factory expansion. It might even decide to scrap its planned $32 billion factory in Germany, a project that has reportedly been delayed, Reuters said.

The plan does not include a proposal to split Intel and sell off its contract manufacturing operation, or foundry business, Reuters said. Bloomberg reported last week that the split was possible, but analysts have dismissed that move as highly unlikely.

MRVL Stock: Marvell Could Make Play For Altera
On the stock market today, Intel stock declined 8.8% to close at 20.10. Meanwhile, MRVL stock sank 8.2% to close at 70.02. Chip stocks broadly fell on Tuesday. The Philadelphia semiconductor index, known as SOX, dropped 7.8%.

If Intel decides to sell its Altera business, Marvell is likely to make a bid for it, analysts say. However, the possible acquisition comes with pros and cons, Raymond James analyst Srini Pajjuri said in a client note Monday.

"From a strategic standpoint, a potential acquisition would help Marvell diversify into industrial/defense markets and beef up its already strong presence in telco and data center markets," Pajjuri said. "Higher gross margins associated with FPGA (field-programmable gate array) products would also be attractive to Marvell, especially as AI custom silicon becomes a larger portion of its revenues."

On the negative side, the FPGA chip market is expected to grow at a slower pace than Marvell's other businesses.

Also, the deal likely will require China regulatory approval, which could be a challenge, Pajjuri said.

Intel bought Altera for $16.7 billion in 2015. Its current market value is about $20 billion, Pajjuri said.

Pajjuri rates Intel stock as market perform. He rates MRVL stock as outperform with a price target of 90.

IBD Stock Ratings For Intel, Marvell
Intel ranks No. 17 out of 32 stocks in IBD's semiconductor manufacturing industry group, according to IBD Stock Checkup. It has a lowly IBD Composite Rating of 11 out of 99.

On Aug. 1, Intel badly missed Wall Street's targets for the second quarter and with its guidance for the third quarter. The chip giant also announced a $10 billion cost-reduction plan and suspended its quarterly dividend. Intel stock plunged on the news.

Meanwhile, MRVL stock ranks 10th out of 39 stocks in IBD's fabless semiconductor industry group. Marvell stock has an IBD Composite Rating of 74.

Intel Monday announced CEO Pat Gelsinger has resigned after a difficult stint at the company. The once-dominant chipmaker’s stock cratered as it missed the AI boom and was surpassed by most of its rivals.

Gelsinger took over as Intel’s chief executive in February 2021, returning to the company at which he had spent decades of work, including as chief technology officer. He had left Intel for a stint as CEO of software giant VMWare.

At Intel, Gelsinger was tasked with turning around the iconic American tech giant that was struggling against unprecedented competition, production delays and the departure of top talent. But during his tenure, the company’s prospects continued to decline, as it became clear the company had fallen behind on another major technology wave and despite billions of dollars in US government spending to support its domestic chip manufacturing.

Intel’s (INTC) stock plunged 61% during Gelsinger’s tenure. The stock rose 4% in premarket trading.

The company announced in August that it would lay off 15% of its staff as part of an effort to slash $10 billion in costs and “fundamentally change the way we operate,” as Gelsinger said at the time.

Well technically Altera took away that long ago since 2025.
Just that due to the location of the office being so far, and the road so jam, not enough car park, not enough cubes.
PG17 I believe it is still Delayed, I was at PG12 and PG 7,8,9 Shuttles around campuses.

I don't think the building will be ready by 2026/27. Alot of unfinished work still not being completed.
Also I believe all the cubes, office equipments and monitors not there.

So like Altera, even we kick all Inteler out PG14/15/16 is not enough to use.
PG7/8/12 spaces are not sufficient for all intellers until whole PG17 / Pelican Space is up.

Story is, previous middle room tenant stays in my room, rented out whole bare unit about RM 1,400 I believe. Which consists of master, middle, and small rooms.
On paper middle and small room is same size unit, but in actual, middle room has better windows view and slightly larger layout by a few milifeet.

Then not sure original middle tenant that deals with Owner didn't do properly room scaling / pricing calcuation.
So technically if Master Bedroom with Attached Toilet, is counted as 2 pax, Middle and Small count as 1 pax/each.
Total 4.

RM 1400/4 pax = RM 350/pax is ok.

And this bare unit comes ready with Air Conds and 2 Tandem Car Parks that can fit 4 cars. But Tandem you know lo. You need to arrange your timing properly with other bedroom tenant. Also got basic fridge, washing machine and hot shower.

Then due to the nature, that I hardly in Penang, and the utility bills always RM 40-60, usually last time RM 90-120+ when 4 pax around. The master tenant hiam me for using too much aircond. So I go move back KL, and come only 1 month < than 1 week basis lo.

Since my company doesn't need me to work in office.

Rent was fine for like 3 years until last March, and suddenly in March 2025 ask me to pay WiFi again, given I already told him and he also agreed verbally in the past that he would absorb TNB and Utility given I was absent more than 3 weeks in a month.

Due to I disagree to this, sudden WiFi payment for RM 40. Master Tenant decided to raise my rent from RM 350 to RM 520 (~48.5%).
Say he will disconnect the WiFi soon.

Then suddenly tell me, he officially moved out months ago, and tell me his brother was staying in his units for these couple of months.
Also my room now I will include TNB Utility, if that month over RM 70, I will need to divide by 3 and start paying.
And Master Tenant will discontinue the WiFi as the small room tenant/ his brother don't want to use his name anymore. (doesn't impact me)

This pretty much concludes "oh this isn't fair to my brother staying a two pax master bedroom with attached toilet", so you will need to help him absorb his room rental.
I'm like internally wtf. Master room always need to count as 2 pax, you have better room layout and bigger windows and attached toilet. Why I need to absorb this?

Even divide by 3. It is RM 466.67. I hardly in Penang, yet you slap a RM 53.33 charge on me for TNB + possibly PBAPP, also no fair to me, as I come less than 1 week, I don't think my Air Cond habbits even can reach this RM 50 amount. And you are using my shared on the subsidized tariffs.

Since lazy to start another argument by disagree and worsen the agreement, out of convenience and fear for worst, not being in Penang to sort out my belongings and find a place to move within the month. He might overtake and seize my room, as I think there are emergency spare keys to my room, also my room is contractless sublet. And I'm not in any legal protection, if I lost any of my pocessions.

In April alot of mental health issues broke out on me, with my parent admitted hospital in KL due to old age and sickness.
So eventually I had since moved out, and I also need to baik hati, find someone to replace me with my current T&Cs.
Then I kena lectured by Master Tenant saying I can't do that. ranting.gif

When I never discussed Property Exits on this Contractless Sublet unit with the previous Tenant who deals with the owner, or current Master Tenant.
Of course I need to deal with some wrong assumption.

Fresh Grads are paid higher than me, those with Masters RM 7k...

Meanwhile I do burst liver monkey work RM 5k for near 4 years...

So far last year I told me director about the RM 5k-7k salary.
He said this is for overseas fresh grads, got insider people. Not sure is it really draw big biscuit.
But I wasn't concern since I liked my department and people.

Intel Community is the first best benefit workplace community. I stayed so long, not sure really jumping and starting fresh from zero again is something I wanted to do.

Given the glory days, of Intel Business Units, have budget hosts Great Place to Work Events.
Mental Health Support Care Packages (Foods Boxes during COVID era). Shuttle/Grab Transport to work.
Fruits and Free Soda Drinks.

Might be for better or for worst. But then I better get a proper N+1 VSS package lah.

People generally in Intel/Flex/Altera are generally nice people from the PG14/15/16 building.
PG12/7/8/9 More safety concerns everywhere. I remember I was walking up a starts holding my phone, get warned by staff.

Otherwise is people park in PG7/8 MLSCP Carpark. Laju abit speed limit, or jaywalk, heard will kena COC also...

I am not sure, need to adjust for inflation I guess. And competition introduced by PFCC (Selangor IC Design Hub).
Afaik some junior from Skyechip was offered RM 10k after GT and 1 year+ working experience, and already people considering jumping out to Singapore already.

From the ad, it is SkyeChip and Oppstar and MaiStorage, need to dig back 2024 post, I think I got post before. What PFCC brings company to Malaysia with the ARM IP Licensing stuff to Malaysia Fabless Design Hubs.

[2025-01] Alterians 10% Salary jump. RM 5.638k, then no more RM 80 food subsidy, replaced with RM 120 taxable (effective should be RM 80)


So, look back to what PFCC been doing recently in 2024.

Meanwhile Singapore peeps already SGD5k for Fresh Grad. I wondering the only reason I am still here because I love my job and my company culture and I still can survive with my current daily expenses. laugh.gif

afaik, my team has overseas folks who used to be ex-CW who worked in AMD, and they have all documentation, full transparency.
They claimed Intel documentation is very locked down, slow and not reflected often, and very patchy.

To me, the MAS/HAS here only serve bare minimum purpose and doesn't fully elabroate the functionality of my test bench testing.
Really need another documentation for that. shakehead.gif

Sometimes I wonder why everything so locked down in between BUs, unless IP between BUs are not shared and sold. Or got some special licensing royalties things.
