QUOTE(toccatina @ May 13 2008, 10:50 PM) Depends on what you wanna play.If wanna play acoustic songs then get an acoustic. If wanna play electric guitar songs then get an electric. You can start with either one. I'll rather get an electric and play clean when I wanna play acoustic style songs or use a acoustic simulator/model in the amp or stompboxes. Besides, chords are easier on the fingers on electric. :-P Barre chords are a total Biatch to execute on an acoustic, never gotten a clean one ever. |

But if you start off with an acoustic, playing on the electric will be way easier later on.
In my transition from acoustic -> electric, my fingers almost shouted " thank you " to me haha. Tho my electric weren't all that great, but you can play somehow easier? Thats what I experienced. |

QUOTE(headhunter7 @ May 13 2008, 10:59 PM) But if you start off with an acoustic, playing on the electric will be way easier later on. Not in my case, I learn electric but at the same time I torture my fingers on the same scale on a cheap kapok. In my transition from acoustic -> electric, my fingers almost shouted " thank you " to me haha. Tho my electric weren't all that great, but you can play somehow easier? Thats what I experienced. You can do the thing simultaneously. Do the scale on the 80 ringgit kapok for 15 minutes, then do it again on the electric, same effect, no need to waste time on the acoustic all the way. The other reason is if the person who got interested in guitar wanted to play electric songs and you dump him/her an acoustic, he/she will get bored very fast especially if the pain is a big deterrence and demotivator. Happens to all the piano players I know who're trying to learn guitar and they all started with acoustic and then gave up. Acoustic guitar can kill guitar interest, I say start with what you're comfortable with, there's no right or wrong. Very likely to turn off the beginner if the gear is too crappy or not the type of music he/she wants.Must ask first, what sort of guitar/songs? Classical guitar ? Finger picking? Flamenco ? Acoustic strumming ? Electric guitar ? Pick the wrong one and you will lose interest fast. Many gave up not necessarily because they lack passion, it's just they're taught stuff they have totally no interest in. It's like attending a college and they teach irrelevant rubbish subjects because you have no choice to pick your modules/majors. Same thing here. Say I wanna learn to play like paul gilbert and you force me to play songs that have no were near paul gilbert's style, of course lose interest fast lah. I think most importantly the learner must know what he/she wants. I'd say starting out with an acoustic when you are really only interested in electric will kill your interest/passion faster. IMHO, dun get a kapok.. there is no need to go through suffering just to deter u from playing further..
Get something decent to ease your entry into a wonderful world of music Several easy to play guitar would be yamaha, samick, takamine etc.. all depends on your budget.. Added on May 13, 2008, 11:20 pmI never believe in such things as torture your fingers to play better.. the common misconception would be using more than the required str to play the guitar.. calluses will form as u play more.. most important thing is not to hurt yourself in the process of practicing... bman , my reason for starting with acoustic is because I started off with acoustic guitar lessons
Up till theres this one time I wanted to play electric, my dad got me one and so when I played electric it felt heaven.haha Though right now a nice classical guitar would really make me happy, Need to write some tunes up |

most important is wut's ur budget?
if u could afford more than a kapok, no harm getting an entry level yamaha which is sounded way betta than kapok... basically, if u r just getting started, u can try with kapok 1st... just that if u could afford for a yamaha... can go for it oso... for those takamine and taylor, i think it's a bit over for a person who just wanted to start... but once again, if u could afford a takamine or taylor, can go for it too... i saw some taylor's in bentley... price range 11k-15k... sound dammmmnnnnnnnn niceee!! if can afford, get those... sure wont regret... lolx... |

QUOTE(wreckens15 @ May 14 2008, 07:08 AM) guitar nice finger not nice= sound not nice de seconded. a crappy guitar will still sounds good on the hands of a good player. btw, a kapok will sound really nice with a good set of nylon strings. i use to string my kapok with nylons and play it like an acoustic. sounds really nice.guitar kapok=finger nice=sound nice whats the point getting good guitar if u cant play that well build ur determination 1st and next ur skill then u will be a man! like IF poem LOL |

LOL..we make our fingers sound like little children. We dont play a shred fast enough we look at them and go "You want me to play the acoustic?.....don't make me!...you better bloody behave!now lets try again before daddy gets upset okay?".
But yes after playing on the acoustic the electric was such a breeze. |
