Hi all,

This is my first time to post in this thread so i don't know whether i can post here but it is related on property. From this thread, i saw some postings regarding renovation but how about wiring part ? Meaning fixing new lights, fans, aircons and etc. What are the cost to budget for this kind of works. I know that some people that engage the electrician to provide the lights, fans and etc as well. What if i were to buy all the stuff then only ask the electrician to settle. Will that be cheaper ?

Please give me your opinion and also electrician recomendation is helpful.

u r just coming to the right place regarding this. yes, indeed, when moving house, get renovation done, everything cost money and the best way is try to reduce as much as possible.

lights, to be honest, u can easily fix it by yourself as long as u have the right equipment. if u are going to install downlight, it will be a little more difficult compare to fluorescent type.

fans, which u can also diy, but for my case, since i am not an expert but understand how all the bolts and nuts works in the fan, i al also doing it myself with a help from a friend, cause, 5 blades ceiling fans is a bit heavy.

air cond, indeed, u need the electrician to do the job for u, cuase, it will be quite tricky and most equipment we as a normal diy people wont have. but, u can try to engaged some people that work for some particular electrical shop to do that for u during weekend or on their leave day in a much cheaper cost.

yes, i did it myself, which is not hard, only if u are a man, cause it consume quite a subdtantial amount of physical energy.

the light, is very simple. the fan, if u buy panasonic model, there are always nice and precise manual in it, but, is better if u have some experience of doing it before.

this, actually will save u some cost, cuase installation of a fan will cost u about rm 15 and a light rm 8-10. besides that, the most important thing is, i am quite into DIY, which give me some enjoyment and to spend my weekend time.

I just had someone installed lightings @ RM25 per unit (flourescent, philips tube + starter), and fans @ RM155 per unit (KDK) on my new unit in Wangsa Maju. Before that I've checked around, lightings would cost around RM12 to RM15.. fans RM110 to RM130.. so can save some if DIY and have some knowledge of electricity.

Hope this helps..

yes, the fluorescent light of philips with bracket which inclusive of starter is about rm 11 to 12. to install it, about rm 10.00, so came out with roughly rm 25.00 is acceptable.

about the fan, KDK, is a very reliable brand. with 150, i guess yours is 3 blades manual type.

But, currently, we have many options of ceiling fans, such as WINGS which the quality is as good as 5 blades panasonic, cause.

5 blades WINGS with remote control ceiling fans is about rm 190 ( a year ago ).

Well, for condo you don't have much choice because upstairs is another unit and therefore, you can't really drill into the ceiling to hide those wires.

Unless you are not planning to hide those wires for additional lights and fans.. Else, extra cost would be going into plaster ceiling.

You don't need an electrician to fix that, anyone who's doing reno job would know how to fix all these. You can buy the fans and lights yourself if you think you can get it cheaper that they do.

You can always ask for quote first and see which one's cheaper.

I'm using alpha ceiling fan anyway.. so far so good.

Yeah forgot to mention the fan type is 3 blades with standard *wired* speed controller. Din get the remote fans coz I'm renting out the unit and afraid the remote might got lost/damage.

Btw, usually these guys they don't really mind if you buy the fans and ask them to install for ya. Their main income should be from labour charges.

Few weeks back then, one of the telephone wires in my house was old and short-circuit (I tested by try and error) causing whole house phones cannot be used. So I called up TM and they intro me some TM appointed contractor. They want to charge us RM50. So, I told my dad to forget it and we went to a shop selling electronic stuff and bought 20 meters telephone wire (2 pairs), RJ-11 connector and a crimping tool(RM33). Total cost about RM45

So from this, I gain a free crimping tools. So next time anything goes wrong with the telephone wire, i can fix it myself. That time would be even lesser the cost.

Oh, btw, the crimping tool can be used to crimp network connector(RJ-45) too. smile.gif
