mkv is like open source and there no standard spec set for it and it's open for anyone to add anything hence it's quite difficult for a standalone hardware to implemente it.

But the bright side of it We don't really need mkv support laaa...we already have ts and m2ts which is more than enough.

Using m2ts and ts we can store video, audio and subtitles (IINM we can even store multiple tracks be it audio or subs). And the audio  is not limited to AAC but even AC3 and DTS of which all can be output correctly and not down converted to stereo like mp4 format.

The only thing I need is for SONY to enable subtitles and audio for ts and m2ts without BD/AVCHD structure coz right now only m2ts files burned on a DVD using AVCHD and blu-ray structure can be played with toggle'ble subs and audio tracks.

So for those who like to download movies in mkv container, there are programs than can remux the file into a working ts and m2ts files and use the existing .srt subtitles files and generate a compatible subtitles for ps3 to use...and this is done without reencoding the video and also the audio. and for a 2+ hours movie to be remuxed, it took less than 5 mins and probably lesser if you have a WD raptor 10k rpm drive.

p/s: I'm now converting all my Band of brothers mkv into AVCHD DVD complete with menus, chapters and intro video plus 720p video with DTS audio and toggle'ble subtitles. Weee thumbup.gif I DVD can fit 2 episode with AC3 audio but only 1 episode with DTS audio.

burn into dvds...nah not for me..I would rather watch all my favorites mkvs from the PS3 hdd...I don't need to have any subtitles...all I do right now is just remux all mkvs into vobs (3mins taken for 1 720p mkv movie to do the remux) and then transfer directly from my PC hdd into my PS3 hdd...this will reduce the lens wear n tear.

who said PS3 internal HDD can't support a single file larger than 4GB....I've successfully transferred a 8GB mkv file (after remuxed into vob) even 10GB 1080p to my PS3 HDD with no problem and watched it flawlessly...that's why I don't need any DVDRs....hehehehehe

this thread redundant? no lar it's not...a new exFAT format that can support a single file larger than 4GB is reported to be compatible with PS3. I never try it to confirm coz it need Vista SP1 to format an external HDD to exFAT...Vista sucks... laugh.gif
