Robert Downey Jr. on Iron Man Sequels

Iron Man and Tropic Thunder star Robert Downey Jr. visited "Live with Regis and Kelly" this morning to promote the latter, but he was asked by Regis Philbin about Iron Man 2.

Downey Jr. would only confirm that it is happening and said he thought they would end up making a trilogy of it. He did, however, hint that he was willing to make more films beyond a trilogy!

Downey Jr. will soon start filming the Guy Ritchie-directed Sherlock Holmes and will then shoot Iron Man 2 for an April 30, 2010 release.

Favreau Gets to Work on Iron Man 2

The Los Angeles Times talked to Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau, who says they have started working on the sequel:

I just talked to Jon Favreau a bit ago, and he said that while there hasn't been an formal announcement on the sequel to "Iron Man," he's begun developing it. "We're working on it now," he said, "which hasn't been officially announced. It will be released in 2010."

Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures are targeting an April 30, 2010 release date in order to be the first film to kick-off that summer, much like Iron Man did on May 2nd of this year.

Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder) is writing the script and in addition to Robert Downey Jr., the first film's co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard are expected to return as well.

Iron Man 2 in 3D? Favreau Wants to Shoot Scenes in IMAX!



Like many of you, when I first saw The Dark Knight on the IMAX screen, I knew then that Hollywood had no choice but to follow Nolan’s lead, at least on some of the big tentpole films. How could they not? The footage was just that incredible. Our friends at Collider were at an Iron Man DVD press conference today when director Jon Favreau announced that he would love to shoot part of Iron Man 2 with IMAX cameras. Not only that but the director also said he would love to shoot the sequel in 3D. Will it happen? It will all come down to costs.

Seeing Iron Man flying around the screen in 3D could be very cool, but also limiting. Filming in 3D means that you have to do shorter cuts so that the audience won’t suffer from eye fatigue. However, I think Marvel would be stupid not to shoot some sequences in IMAX. The result for The Dark Knight is undeniable. Many fans went to the theaters twice just to see it again on the huge screen. An extra $60 million from the IMAX box office is certainly enough to at least consider the idea.

Terrence Howard Replaced In Iron Man 2



For anyone looking forward to Terrence Howard’s “next time” in Iron Man 2, there’s bad news. HR reports that Howard is out of the sequel and Don Cheadle is in instead.

In Iron Man, Terrence Howard played Tony Stark’s friend Jim Rhodes. In the comics, Rhodes eventually dons his own suit of power armor to fight alongside Tony, a future alluded to by Howard’s “next time” line in the first film. Howard himself, had seemed enthusiastic about the possibility of a growing role in the future of Iron Man. Unfortunately, it seems things have fallen apart and Marvel has gone with a cheaper option. Surprisingly, that option is Don Cheadle.

Though any fan of the franchise will no doubt hate to see Howard replaced, you really can’t go wrong by replacing him with Cheadle, every bit his equal when it comes to acting chops. From a talent perspective, this is a lateral move, and luckily too since Rhodes is expected to play a bigger role in the sequel. Whether that means he’ll actually get to go superheroing with Tony remains to be seen.

The rest of the cast however, is headed back on to Tony Stark’s superhero stripper pole. Favreau is of course directing with Robert Downey Jr. starring as Tony. Gwyneth Paltrow is also likely to return as plucky girl love interest Pepper Potts.

Cheadle in Iron Man?!



How's this for surprising news? Terrence Howard, the first actor cast in IRON MAN, will not be returning for the film's sequel. Marvel has instead cast Don Cheadle to replace Howard as Jim Rhodes, who is expected to have a much larger role in the sequel. Though neither side made an official comment, negotiations for Howard fell through because of financial differences. Likely Howard, sensing he was going to be a much larger part of the IRON MAN franchise, wanted some big bucks but Marvel played hard ball after already shelling out big bucks to director Jon Favreau and Robert Downey, Jr. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel had "wanted to work with Cheadle" and when the deal with Howard fell through, they decided to take the character of Jim Rhodes in a "different direction." Huh? What exactly does that mean? This is disappointing news for a property that was operating with almost unheard of levels of positive buzz. Howard was a big "Iron Man" fan and was really looking forward to becoming War Machine in the sequels. While THE DARK KNIGHT showed that a superhero movie can overcome recasting of a lead (Maggie Gyllenhaal for Katie Holmes), Howard and his character were expected to be a much larger part of IRON MAN's future than Rachel Dawes. Thoughts? Concerns? Strike back below...
