Can i go Sydney from Gold Coast without flying? Maybe take train or what?

It seems like Aussie dollar shoot up till almost 3.0 now.
If i were to bring 5k over there for 2persons to Sydney and GC 8D7N will it still be sufficient? Planning to go on nex year end.

Planning to spend mayb 4days in Sydney and 4days in GC.
Might be staying over friend's place in Sydney and mayb staying some cheap hostel in GC.
The 5k will exclude flight tic, means mainly for food, transport, entrance tic and maybe some shopping.
Can anyone please advice on this? Thanks.
