Mostly deadly@harmful threat to computer is not virus, but other malware @ malicious codes. The most important thing to remember is don't download or run suspicious files in your computer. If you unsure, just send the file to www.virustotal.com and see the result and the desicion is there. Mostly the results are acurate, but there are possibility that it's a false positive.

And remember that there's no 100% protection for computer security, but never giveup on an security application if it just miss one or two "unwanted" programs. Choose what best for you based on your judgement and I recommend you to install:

1 antivirus, 1 online scanner, 1 antispyware, 1 firewall, and if you want more security but a bit hassel, IDS(intruder detection system) or HIPS.
