Hello all,

I'm a new glider owner here. I didn't get a chance to attend the 2-day event at Ikano due to transportation problems from Cyberjaya. Got an 8 week old female glider named Judy. Hope to learn from you all.

Noob question here, is it normal for a glider to be active in the dark room, and not in a room where lights are on (I know that they are nocturnal) Judy seems to be active even in the mornings when I turn the lights off. When I turn them back on again, she'll go to sleep and she sleeps at night. Wakes up at about 6.am

Yep, that's normal. They hate the lights on smile.gif

Thanks for your reply, KP. Still got a lot to learn here since Judy's my first glider. It took me quite a while to make the decision to get her. Seriously no regrets in getting her.. Still trying to get her attached to me. She will stay still for a while say 5 to 10 and then start jumping off. She's improved a lot.. No longer crabbing and hissing like what she did on day 1 and day 2.

Judy pee'd on my shirt when I brought her out just now. She just finished clearing her water chestnuts and mealworms. Took her to Pet Safari jalan jalan and found that their gliders look so pitiful.. very small in size and kept in a glass tank thingy for reptiles with no place to hide only shreds of newspapers in there. Feel sad for them. All curled up.

PS have sick underage joeys. Some are dying and sick, so anyone who bought them would most likely end up having a dead joey in a few days after purchase. The staff there have been ignorant with our advice as many members here have approached them and gave them advice already.
*
I agree with that.. all they do is just to sell underaged joeys just to get profit, not taking into consideration of the poor creature's health conditions and the fact that the people who end up with joeys going to heaven few days later. It's not a fair trade. I wonder if there are any animal rights laws to prevent these. This is considered cruelty to animals, selling underaged creatures which still need care from their parents and haven't gone through the weaning stage yet.

True, as seen on Animal Planet! They get arrested and fined a hefty sum. By the way, crazymouse_yyh, I've read your guide on the first page saying that glider's suitable environment temperature is somewhere around 23°C to 26°C. I am used to setting my a/c unit to 22°C will it have a dramatic effect on Judy, as I am staying at a hostel, she's kept in my room and my a/c is on 24/7 will switch it off for a couple of hours every now and then. I cannot leave her outside the corridor as some bunch of weirdos will definitely disturb her just like they did to a hamster of mine which I left outside for a while due to it's annoying cage biting habit. The cage moved a few doors down and the poor hamster smelt of smoke.

Well, if your joey is young, you should really try to have it at 24C. Not comfortable for a joey to be in such a cold room, and also it is alone so there is no body heat to keep warm. And your aircond is like 24/7 so you better get it to 24C so your joey doesn't fall sick.
*
Thanks for the advise.. Will adjust the temperature accordingly. Finally, Judy's started to eat her mealies without me having to cut them into half now. After having her for less than a week, she's already stopped her crabbing and can socialise a bit (stay still on me and let people pet her) with the exception of her tail being touched.

It's sickening. I don't blame the forum... more like the seller for being irresponsible by advising people that way. Summore got "medal" for being good seller. What is the point of being a good seller when cannot advice new owners on the proper ways to keep gliders? I bet she must have told people to use those longish cages or short cages than the proper cages.
*
I agree wih you on that. The poor glider will fry under the sun.. They are not dogs or other animals which can be under the sunlight for hours.. even dogs will need to seek shade if it's too hot. Giving unappropriate information to people, that's the last thing a good seller would do especially a seller who loves pets! i'm so put off by the way the seller taught people the method to rid the smell.

Will be there around 12 or a bit later. Somewhere around that time. Customers demanding for GliderSLURP already hahahah. Keera is gonna be with me, if I manage to find her as she sleeps anywhere in my room.

I may get another Wodent Wheel hahaha... and more bowls.

Wow, you let your gliders loose in your room?

Oh well, Looks as if Judy won't get her freedom just yet, as my room is full of electrical wires and cables. Need to rearrange the things in the room first haha.. Do they go back to the cage by themselves when it's sleeping time or do you need to hunt around for them?

i do too. but when they started biting my toes, or nibbling my ears, and grooming my hair while i sleep....
its a sign i need to cage them  back again. if not cannot sleep maa...
when they were lil joeys, they were easier tho. can let loose n just bark once the whole nite.

Added on June 3, 2008, 10:46 pmfor me its a good exercise for them to be let loose and roam in the room. As they cannot do much gliding in the cage.
When i let them loose, they tend to learn to jump a longer distance and now they can glide as well.
*
Mine used to glide before it got used to staying on me. she now either sits very still on my shoulders or on top of my head or maybe she's still scared that's why keep so still. She can be in that state for about 15 minutes or more.. but her head keeps looking around every now and then.

this is during the day or nite?
sumtimes if we wake them up during the day, they do have the kind of habit of being stoned.
Hehehe...Koochee does, but cheekoo is a diff case tho.

during the nite, if the lights still on, they also mite go into this stage. or if its in a new environment.
when i 1st put her in the flexarium, she took quite a while to adjust to her surrounding.
but when they're familiar with it, they'll become uncontrollable. hehehe...want to explore everywhere.

given time, maybe she'll be comfortable with u and ur surrounding. and will start her own exploring soon.
smile.gif gudluck.

Usually happens during the day, in a room with slight sunlight coming through the curtains. Still quite dim. I've just had her coming to a week already.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your glider. My condolences to you. Rest assured that she will be at a place with other gliders that have passed on. She will be looking down from above over you.

Sad to say that the staff there are pretty unexperienced as well. I bought Judy (as seen in the picture below) from a breeder, she was 2 months old. I got her for slightly more than a week now. When I took her to P.S. the staff asked her age I told him that the glider was 2months old. He replied me saying that Judy doesn't look like a 2-month old glider. Looks more lika a 4-month old glider.

crazymouse, I've bought your mixed fruit slurp from Joan few days ago. Judy seems to like it but will spit out some kind of fibrous stuff. By the way, how do I tell if the slurp has gone bad? Excuse me if this is a stupid question.

hehe.. now pet safari is displaying the joeys in 2 aquariums..

1 aquarium is on the the counter, displaying underage joeys but kinda better condition than ones seen before..

but the other aquarium displaying damn wet, shaking & tiny little joeys in cold shivering together...

each aquarium got 3 joeys...
*
Wet and shaking underaged joeys?! In air conditioned area, I think they want the gliders to catch a cold. No sense at all.. It's really inhumane!

They can be very naughty at times. Mine I put on my bed, when I want to catch her back and put into the cage, she will try to act like a scorpion, tail put up and point it slightli forwards with all 4 legs wide open.. She'll usually jump a bit to the left and to the right and jumping in small steps giving me the impression that she's trying to say "you cannot catch me". She's alright when you catch her and put her back into the cage.
