mass merchandise stores hardly run Astro prog in their stores because they wanto display the best video clips on the plasma or LCD tv so that can make customers feel good on the tv.

after purchase been made, nice or not nice PQ is not their matter anymore.

from my observation, many people buy samsung full hd LCD tv not for the PQ but the full HD name.

it is better for you to see both of them side-by-side on astro, on gaming especially winning eleven, and green field scene. you will know whether sammy full HD is really that good or not.  hmm.gif

I am in the same situation now, to go for the Full HD sammy LA40A550 (Full HD) or to go for the 42PV80 Panny? rclxub.gif

What is your personal opinion after comparing them both for Astro viewing and DVD's? Please share...

that's the problem. they always display those videos which are usually provided  by the manufacturer. can't really make the comparison.  sad.gif

42PV80H is top of the list now, no doubt. just wanna make sure Sammy's A550 lives up to its Full HD name.

wasn't free lately but will try to go to Best Denki & SenQ to view both units later tonight, hopefully. smile.gif

Oh teikwing could you please feedback your opinions later today...

Tomoro will be in Sogo K.L. will have the chance to see the Panny 42PV80H and the Sammy A550 in more detail at Best Denki, this time seriously. Planning to get one very soon. At the moment my choice is leaning to the Panny. More tomorrow.

Ok did my survey and my findings are as below. Before i begin let me explain that this are my personal views and also i was already leaning to the PV80H. I wanted to be sure before i purchased.

In Best Denki Sogo the 42PV80H and the Sammy 5series 40inch LCD were not in the same location. So the envoirement was different, i mean the surrounding lights. In the first look the Sammy 5 series was more eye cathing with its polished frame. The Panny was not so dull but was not the same as the Sammy.

Picture quality?, they both had different DVD's being played but both connected via HDMI. If i am not mistake. Difficult to see, all sealed up.

The Sammy was more brighter and even more sharper compared to the Panny. This could be due to different settings. If i watched for a very long time, i have to say my eyes were becoming a little uncomfortable. The sharpness was not natural to me. Colours were good.

Viewing the Panny was some what more comfortable, it just felt rite to my eyes. The colours were also good but kinda more suttle and natural. Looked at the blacks and thet were really good.

Next was to test the side angle view, The Panny to me won here, at an extreme angle the Panny's colours and PQ stayed good but the Sammy's got a little brighter and the colours were not the same when viewed at the front. This could have been due to the surrounding reflections but i tried from both angle's. The resluts were the same.

The sammy is Full HD and the Panny is HD only but my normal viewing will be mainly 80% astro. Could not compare Astro viewing but i understand Astro looks also better with the Panny Plasma.

I have to say both are very good sets and it was definetly difficult to choose as the price point was not much different. After thinking about it i decide to stay with the 42PV80H. One other big factor why i am going with the Panny, is the 5 years warranty.

So next step is to get it while the 5 years warranty offer is still on. Anyone know how long this offer of 5 years warranty will last?

hmmm just to share.. well according to this one guy at the puchong
shop (same row with citibank... you can get the pv80h for rm3800 with
free camera!! he could be messing with me as i have asked him before
i made my purchase at senq. he quoted me RM4200 no free gift.

went there again to get the philips 5986 tekan price till rm330. he was telling
me i should have came back as the pana pv80h has dropped bla bla..
*
I could check that on my way home today but i beleive the 3800 is for the 42PV8H and not the 42PV80H. Its interesting that it still comes with the free camera. What is his name?

senq LOL.

*
Well i will test him out after work today. Citibank Puchong is on my way home anyway. I suspect the price is the price without any commision. Will update tomorrow.

total running hours 100,000 hours

compared to standard lcd 60,000 hours

i saw it on the display panel

astro on my pv8h? watchable but for many i think its not ideal
im using custom made cables out of telekom wires to link the astro biggrin.gif

im looking to use a better cable later for best video quality biggrin.gif
*
I think he wants to know the total hours the new set has been running. This will be only visible via the service menu...

blink.gif You using telecom wires to connect to the Astro decoder. That means using composite connection. Switch to s-video should be better.

Getting my Pana 42PV80H from htkaki. biggrin.gif I have dealt with him before and he is very professional. On the other hand i can be rest assured that i will get a new set and not a display set, which i fear the most. Only money has to change hands now tongue.gif

Next is to get a HDMI upscaling player with digital optical out. My old htib has only optical in, no coex. doh.gif

QUOTE(croozer @ Aug 11 2008, 09:33 PM)
hi Sifus,

Rcvd my panny 42pv80h from Jusco today.

Questions:

1. I can't get video when connecting s-video cables, astro to panny. What am I doing wrong. It's ok, composite to composite

2. Anybody mind sharing the best settings for their pv80h in terms of PQ?

3. Since my home theatre with dvd player has hdmi connections, what are the best connection settings to hook up the astro decoder, home theatre to the pv80h.

Thanks in advance.

"You can wait and wait and never be happy. I got my panny and now I'm a happy puppy!"
*
Err, S-Video from Astro decoder to the PV80H and the left and right audio you could connect to the home theatre or to the PV80H. As mentioned by arremie, select the correct AV on the PV80H. AV3/4 is for s-video.

Found out the problem.

S-video when connected from my dvd player, no problem  biggrin.gif

S-video connected from astro decoder, no picture  vmad.gif  cry.gif

so it must be something wrong with the astro decoder s-video port. Any ideas/options anyone?

Anyone can share how much improvement in PQ when using Astro s-video port?

"Always something to spoil my day"

Well at least you can sleep better knowing its not your new panny.

S-Video for me is better in two aspects, the edges will not have jagged lines as seen on composite. If i compare with normal CRT TV, the S-Video is better compared to composite in details, but dont aspect too too much then you will be happy. smile.gif

These photos are for those you want to "judge" PQ of 42PV80 on ASTRO. FYI, I'm using Philips s-video cable to connect ASTRO and Panny plasma. Picture taken with Nikon D80, lense 50mm at ~ f/2.0, shutter speed 1/30-1/60, no post processing except image resizing  cool2.gif !

My mum watches her dramas for like 3-4 hours countinues and i just noticed that that damm astro channel has the content providers logo all day long. Even during breaks doh.gif cry.gif sad.gif

I am ensure that pv80h don't have burn in issues. I am using pv90h more than 4 months.
Sometimes I even pause my dvd playback for more than 30 mins, still no sign of burn it.

pv80h is excellent for the price we are paying. Very value for your money.
