I suggest that invite top Asian teams to compete in the grand finals (just like the ESTC 2008) to make the event will have coverage not just in Malaysia, but in different countries through gaming forums, community talks etc, in a way, a good publicity to SMM itself.
More prize money? This post has been edited by Iblis: Apr 15 2008, 08:02 AM |

Prize like last years, no doubt will be a lot oversea teams looking forward to join.
Suggestion- Quota for 4 - 8 teams for oversea team, im sure you all wouldnt like such huge ammount went out just like that to foreigners? Online Qualifiers, Overseas team required online qualifier, each team which join required to pay 50 or 100 usd. you can based on regional or watever. able to pay money for underminer for mashall during online, pay the marshall money bla bla.... (just do like mym qualifier) Make on 22 august - 24 august, at least its school holidays, 2ndly is near indepandant day provide food and transportation for foreigners since they did pay usd 50 or 100. local team, sorry, its our online time to earn foreigners money. Added on April 15, 2008, 11:49 am QUOTE(Iblis @ Apr 15 2008, 10:56 AM) unless the prize money is big enough to cover all the expenses, then I think they'll interested if there's an invitation. If not, I doubt they'll come. dun forget those top team got the sponsorship, no worry for that anyway, at least its a big prize, with asia and europe and america coming. This post has been edited by guardioo: Apr 15 2008, 11:49 AM |

However, it's not an issue for Asian teams. Cost to travel to Malaysia is rather affordable, so the prize money is more than enough to cover (at least for SMM Grand Final prize money standard) Maybe the organizer can collaborate with the Malaysia Tourism Board and have some sort of special rate for the participants out from Malaysia. I don't know, but it's possible though. With the current change of the Youth and Sport minister, it can be done. Nevertheless, thumbs up for SMM and their hardworking admins. Yes.. recently Youth & Sports Ministry has launched a program called rakan cyber.. What they r lacking is an officer to push for a e-sports games. By then u can have sponsorship from government and active tournaments.. but yeah.. it is easy to said than done.. but i believe it can be done if someone from KBS brought this up.. unlucky i'm in National Sports Institute..

The cost was not as much to Malaysia. For example. eMg Fire in Ice at Chicago, MYM only sent 3 of their Europe players which Maelk, H4nn1- & Mania, the rest were American players. They won USD6000. My point is, in order for the teams to send their teams to participate in tournament in Malaysia, they'll have to consider the travel cost and of course, what's the cash prize on stake. |

opening the tournament to foreigners will definately makes the tournament more competetitve ,higher level and more international coverage but this wont benefit SMM much as i dont think SMM have any interest/business outside of malaysia
by making the tournament open this will discourage local teams to join and demoralize them to play more dota as they would feel like they wont stand a chance to go far or win i think the purpose of SMM tournament is to attract and encourge more locals to play DOTA and thus benefit SMM from the licence fees anyway this is just my point of view and opinion i could be wrong but of course i hope that the tournament would be open to outsiders as this would make the tournament more interesting and the chance of Kingsurf to fight with top teams without any delay and lag This post has been edited by Flizzardo: Apr 15 2008, 03:06 PM |

@ Flizzardo
Agree with your point of view. There's always pros and cons. However, if we look at Malaysia DotA scene in general, SMM already succeed with their goals to encourage and attract more locals to play DOTA with not one, but twice of the tournament.Heck, who doesn't know SMM 30K tournament in Malaysia? IMO, it's time for SMM to go global. More coverage = good for SMM company profile. It's a win-win situation. I don't think that local teams will feel discourage if they know international teams will participate, but more motivated. Who doesn't want to laugh at Vigoss in front of his face when you pawned him? Anyway, looking forward for this tournament. |

QUOTE(wenjie86 @ Apr 15 2008, 02:32 PM) Where r u based? Well a lot of suggestions and ideas can be brought up. But 2 execute it is a whole different story. U need money, manpower and so on.. To satisfied everyone is kinda hard but it can be done.. with proper planning n good sponsorship than e-sports will emerge as a big industry in malaysia. One way is to create an active tournament with a two polls. Losers of first round and second round goes to losers poll while winners march on. But yeah this suggestions also have its own pro and con... people who are actually good might 'lose' the game during 1st round, just to grab the title for losers poll. But this way, amateur player would be able to compete with those pro players from outside malaysia. And it will increase malaysian players experience. Again it is all about money.. u have money than only u can talk. U can create so many tournaments the whole year.. talented new players will emerge since there a platform for them to shine. That why i said it is vital for SMM or any other organizer to cooperate with Ministry to get some budget for e-sports. It's maybe not much for the first time, say around 200k.. but i'm sure it's more than enough to get e-sports going in malaysia. You know why Malaysian sports are poor (mostly)? Becoz sports in malaysia never produce a millionaire (almost tough for squash n badminton). Just imagine if playing Counter Strike or DotA will make u a millionaire.. im sure your parent will encourage u to train more. They might buy u all the expensive gears.. just my 2cen toughts Added on April 15, 2008, 4:51 pm QUOTE(nles @ Apr 15 2008, 04:25 PM) Government people very easy to kow tim... i know. I definetely agree that there are cons as well as pros regarding inviting overseas teams to participate in SMM, however looking at it carefully, it will certainly bring more cons in comparison to pros.
Take a long look at the name of the tournament itself, Sendi Mutiara Malaysia(SMM) tournament. It is obvious that we should only allow Malaysian teams to tournament as it is the only big-scale tournament in Malaysia that offers such a big reward and prize cash to the participants. However, by inviting other teams from overseas, local teams WILL be discouraged as Flizzardo has mentioned and pointed out earlier. I do see the joy in being able to laugh in Vigoss's face, IF(which is the big question) we can even lay a finger on him. Please don't be too hopeful, currently our dota standard is on the rise and developing, bringing in too tough a competition will only serve to stunt the growth of our gaming community. Do not think so far in the future, think of our current situation. We should allow our local teams to enjoy having their special own country tournament. It would be dreadful if such a big price cash for all 3 top placing be given out to overseas teams. There are enough tournaments in the world to satisfy the overseas top teams, let our local players have a chance at glory. : ) |

QUOTE(Ice-SeaNz` @ Apr 15 2008, 05:27 PM) That's just a figure of speech. A metaphor.Added on April 15, 2008, 5:40 pm QUOTE(Ice-SeaNz` @ Apr 15 2008, 05:27 PM) I don't see the reason why if they join, it'll be like auto-win for them. By right, with no doubt at all, our local talent are with the same par or maybe superior compare with them, given the match play with no whatsoever delay at all. Unless, you're underestimated yourself and the rest of Malaysian DotA community with that statement. I, myself think Team Ice can beat VP like no problem. =)Anyhow, everyone is entitled with their own opinions, and Seanz, you're right in a certain degree in your post. No offense taken or meant. I know it was just a metaphor, but metaphors can be countered.
Also, there are obviously very good teams in Malaysia as well, such as Kingsurf who's team has won XCN and zenith on numerous occasions, however what i'm talking regarding are not the high-profile teams such as Kingsurf BUT, the new teams which have just been formed and would like to have a shot at getting into the top 8. With high-profile overseas teams participating, their chances have been lowered down MORE in addition to the top local teams So we should allow our underdogs to have a chance to win as well. No offense taken, we're having a civilized discussion, all opinions are welcomed to this. However, i think by improvements to the tournament, the thread-starter probably meant things in terms of organizing. Firstly, from my last year's experience and the previous previous year as well. 2006 and 2007, it was very disorganized. 1) Players should be allowed to watch other teams playing on a big-screen. An attempt to obtain several big-screen TV's for the sake of the participants as well as spectators will be very much appreciated. 2) Drinks should be supplied, Cheap ones. Sponsors should be pretty easy to find as many brand names would love to have their brand splashed all over a cybercafe, especially one with so many people there. 3) Not only that, the previous year had a commentator or two, can't quite recall who but they mumbled too much and spoke without clearity. We can barely hear the commentators past the noise from the public. 4) Also, we must ensure that the organizers start the matches punctually and end on time so that teams are no exhausted from the long journey as well as from waiting all day long. Teams whom are not on time without proper reason should be disqualified or marks should be deducted to ensure fairness and responsibility of the team leader who should make certain that their team are on the dot. lol This post has been edited by Ice-SeaNz`: Apr 15 2008, 06:05 PM |

Having teams from oversea is certainly a good idea. Instead of open competition, maybe SMM could have an invitational exhibition competition for starters. Like top SMM Nationals teams vs. the International Teams.
Also, I would like to suggest to move the Grand Final venue to a more open area. It's more comfortable for everybody instead of cramping everyone in a cybercafe. QUOTE(nles @ Apr 15 2008, 04:25 PM) Hihihihihihihihihihihi |

QUOTE SMM DotA 2008 Coming soon!, We make gaming professional. Professional ? LOL, lets not kid ourselves here. Until the day we get government and corporate support/sponsorship, gaming in Malaysia will still be regarded as a hobby. So far all we've had are at best product sponsorships and plenty of broken promises. Passion for gaming will only get one that far. This part of the world, rarely will it bring food to the table or money into one's pocket. |
