To Beast-Slayer
The match between your team (NRA) and Fusion was very interesting to watch. It was so close.
It was something really incredible to watch when you guys were playing HQ. I was on the edge of my seat, as the scores were so close.
it was good to see a fresh team like NRA being able to hold it out against vets like Fusion.
QUOTE(n1troN` @ May 11 2008, 08:22 PM)
grats to the winners , cod4 is actually quite fun

, thanks to the organizers that held this tournament and i hope there will be more in the future. And its good to see that theres 28 teams that joined , thats a good amount and i think it will only be more... guess the community for cod4 is building up here , and looking at ESP theres already like 30 people including the supporters.
I know that this tournament is sort of an experiment and its for people to have fun so theres 3 game modes... but I think that maybe in the future tournaments they should be in SnD mode (non hardcore) , because from what I can see , all the European and American tournaments for cod4 are in SnD and I think its a better mode for the game because it requires more technical stuffs and also strats and teamwork.. and it will definitely be more competitive and can also get the Msian teams to be ready for the COD4 tournaments in the future if theres a chance for the people here to represent the country in that game. Just my thought... and well played everyone , cya all in the next cod4 tournament hopefully. Cheers

i definitely take your opinions into mind. when i earlier drafted the rules, quite a number of online tourneys were ranked based TDMs. S&D hadn't appeared yet.

sorry mate, i didnt take down the TDM scores. in fact, i only took the scores for a few of the last matches but in the excitement i forgot about the final match's TDM score.
QUOTE(Falk @ May 12 2008, 01:46 AM)
Nice games all around!
I've long been a sideline observer of the local CS scene since WCG 2003 (Marshalling for some obscure RTS... heh) and intrigued in competitive FPS play for that long, although I've never really had the time to get seriously involved in the first-person sense (Haha, punny). At the end of March or so I remember Grr saying "Hey, there's a CoD4 comp coming up, let's see how far we can make it", and I honestly thought that we'd just go there and play some matches casually, hence showing up to Friendly matches and the tourney itself
without a proper headset/mic, and a 6-dolla generic Microsoft mouse. However in hindsight, I'll admit that I had a lot of fun in the tourney and would have even if we'd been knocked out early. Honestly, the early tension is the central, integral part of any competition - watching the big names play their first rounds, being completely blown away by the different strategies and lockdown methods all revolving around cohesiveness and knowing what your teammates are thinking at all times... that alone is worth paying money for.
But enough rambling, props to king kong for putting together such a good pilot tourney. I seriously think that CoD4 tournaments should always find way to incorporate multiple game types. We've all had literally a decade of Counter-Strike (and all its derivatives like Source... wow) and that's basically what round after round of just SnD would boil down to - Counter Strike with new maps and new guns.
About future tournaments:
CoD4 is a brilliant game, and even though it suffers from some minor balance issues, the plethora of game types right out of the box is seriously a breath of fresh air compared to watching different teams execute the same few tactic variants on the same few maps over and over again in CS. I can say for a fact that during all the Friendlies we played, I had the most fun in HQ games as it introduces a completely new dynamic to the old point-gun, shoot-people formula. The same goes for most of the other game types (barring TDM, which serves its purpose as a good warm-up and a test of map knowledge) Making clans expand their tactics and come up with new solutions to gain the upper hand in the different modes is what I feel as the next logical step in the evolution of competitive FPS. Good leadership, good analyctical skills, good improvisational ability (and of course, good aim!) = success.
In a nutshell, I'd be really disappointed if CoD4's competitive stage devolved into SnD, and only SnD. It would be like if CS competitions were based only on AWP shootouts - a mere tiny facet of what the game is ultimately about. I think it's safe to say that quite a big fraction of the people who participated yesterday/today would agree with this.
Again, it was really fun, and -really- good, especially considering the tourney rules/format was put together with no solid frame of reference. I wish I had more time to devote to competitive play, but at least I'll be turning up for the next few. :V
With a headset. And mic.
And a real mouse. And a mousepad.
And a... calculator?
-[SHARK WIT LASAR] Falk
thanks for your observation Falk. i couldnt agree more. I had 3 game modes to see which would have a a better and more competitive gameplay. TDM was more of a run a gun, skill is essential but teamwork will help. S&D is like ol CS, only difference was the side switching, giving teams more equal opportunities. HQ is a variant of TDM, but because too few teams played it, i couldn't assess how well the game was.
it's going to be a tough decision!
i lol-ed when u guys saw NRA using a calculator. Slayerz wasn't it?
QUOTE(songhan89 @ May 12 2008, 02:14 AM)
GG to all the teams. Nice tourney we had. I enjoyed playing in the tourney.
King Kong = One of the nicest organiser ever!!!
COD4 is amazingly embraced in malaysia. We should hold more compy to bring this game up.
Many funny things happened during the tourney though. ESP people were nice and funny.
Some of my suggestions here to king kong:
1) Use dedicated server, train admins to learn up important server cmd.
2) Implement password and tell the password to the team leader.
3) Instead of switching 2 rounds each side on SnD. We could just easily do 7 rounds on each side. It allows each team to come up with more variation in strategies. Changing offensive and defending are a bit messy.
4) Like nitron suggested, SnD should be the priority choice for game mode in COD4 as it test the most for a team's overall performance. I liked other modes as well like HQ. However, the consistency of the game mode relies heavily on the server roundtime etc settings. So i believe the organiser has to put in some effort to tweak the competition in-game settings in order to provide the most competitive condition for each game.
5) Somehow i still prefer the champion not to be barred, lol or else we where got motivation ah? We should keep the champion's right to join the next competition thus elevating the COD4 teams spirit and qualities.
Falk!! Hate you guys so much in HQ! the C4!! haha
we kena torn like hell
i'm still trying to figure out how to broadcast as an admin. i had trouble talking to 'live' players during S&D when Team Only spectator mode was switched on. in fact, i was fiddling with the admin commands a day before the tourney and managed to get most of it to work. phew!
as for the tournament settings, i actually discussed with several people on this and so far these settings were fairest. but there's always room for improvement. thanks for the feedback!
as for champion barring, as a Malaysia i know how many M'sians are easily demotivate when seeing a reigning champion playing over and over again. simply look at M. Schumacher... i stopped watching F1 because of him!
QUOTE([ESP].Ashley @ May 12 2008, 02:29 AM)
Its true the SnD mode is very competitive but CoD4 is still at it's early stage in Msia's gaming community and making it overly competitive would just kill the sport. I suggest keeping it simple till there are more advanced players around and more variety of players.
King Kong choose the 3 modes is to introduce 3 different gameplays to the players.
TDM for fast paced frag and run.
SnD requiring teamwork and planning.
HQ as a fast paced objective based game.
Not many teams have communication skills and therefore making it seriously tough for them. A majority of the teams who joined they tournament were a mixed team. A team made from picking out players from the cafe server just for the sake of making a team and having fun and I doubt having only SnD matches would make it any fun for them and again, going back to CS type of matches. I know you guys from Fusion are familiar with CS type of games but this isn't CS anymore and I don't wish for CoD4 to become a duplicate of CS
i personally would not want CoD4 to be similar to CS. one of the key important criterias in making e-sports more successful is for the spectators to understand the game more. TDM was pretty simple, S&D for CoD4 was easier to understand compared to CS as it displayed scores, but the round intermission could be confusing.
QUOTE(Falk @ May 12 2008, 02:32 AM)
Er, my loadout was 3 stuns for freezing counter-rushes while our team attempts to cap HQ. Flaver had the C4s. And yeah they're annoying... especially so when an enemy frag blows it up while we're still inside.

I can kinda understand why people would want to gravitate towards SnD, since it's what we've all been familiar with for a decade++. My two cents is that maybe it's time to just let that game dynamic slowly fade away from being the centerpiece. It's served its time.
I'll also argue that there's a lot of nuance and strategy involved in non-SnD game modes. Part of what Ashley said I agree with - as it is for people who have been playing CS competitively, there's a lot of depth to SnD which the casual pick-up-group won't understand just yet. However, that alone doesn't mean that HQ or Domination or even Sabotage (haha) can't be discussed and analyzed to death. Trust me, the depth of gameplay is there. The difference right now is the years of experience people have had with SnD style gameplay, vs. the relative equal-grounding everyone, competitive background or not, has in the other game modes.
The only thing that SnD has that makes it more... tense, would be the higher cost of dying in any given round. And even then the difference isn't as marked as it seems at first glance. Dying at a bad time in HQ and respawning across the map can really cost you that particular cap and put you at a very disadvantaged position for subsequently destroying it. It's similar though not as pronounced in Domination, unless the format includes a reasonable respawn timer.
Edit: Misc. typos.
my other rationale for introducing 3 game modes was to encourage more people playing different modes. i hate to see it end up like CS when everyone ONLY plays de_dust... i had asked the ESWC organizers on how many teams participating in CS this year round... there were only 8 inquiries and not confirmed participation. plenty of room to improve and thank you for the analysis.
QUOTE(songhan89 @ May 12 2008, 02:42 AM)
I agree many gamemodes in COD4 are fun. I believe someday in the future we'll find a balance beam that satisfy everyone. And the perfect roundtime etc etc that fits the best .
Then we can send our msia team to beat those european COD4 teams like dignitas, fnatic
i sure hope to send a team and win something back!
QUOTE(crashtec @ May 12 2008, 02:53 AM)
Did you see the first MOL CS tourney? My god... that was the only time in the world people were allowed to "ghost" opponent teams.
And the best part was the Dead Talk.. they were practically shouting!

Anyway, when playing with a team that does stuff like that, play smarter. Ghosting is one thing, but telling their teammates where they died is another. You can always move away.
Try not to blame the marshalls too much, you as players should understand not to do it in the first place. Yes they are at fault for not enforcing it, but players are at fault for abusing it. (assuming you abused it that is)
Anyway, Grats to the winners <eMo> and PEW PEW SWL lolz, we have tons of improvements that we need to make and hopefully this would be our launch pad to future tourneys and possibly representing Malaysia in WCG. (after we get it there of course)
Also thanks to King Kong(jun king) for organizing such an event.

hopefully the WCG and all other tournaments will consider CoD4.
QUOTE(Mr.Pikachu @ May 12 2008, 03:15 AM)
Congratulations to all the winners, especially SWL. Everyone did great in the tourney. I have to admit I'm now actually feeling very emo that we lost to SWL, managed to vent out my anger/disappointment online. But grats anyway.
This is not the end.

Somehow this sentence reminds me of something.
Wei Death, for the Blitzone tourney when you get the details post it up as soon as possible wei,I don't want last minute training again.
Thank you
king_kong for organizing this tournament that will hopefully increase the number of COD4 players for the community!
the blitzone tourney will still be done by me. its currently slated for sometime at the end of June but will be confirmed.

thanks, yea.. i cant sleep well that night.. thinking about it make me depressed.. but i got to move on.. i'll train harder so that i can be a reliable teammate, but 1st i need to look for a clan

.. any clan interested to hire SlayErz? No need to pay for transfer fee since i'm out of NRA contract already.. lol

QUOTE(Grr @ May 12 2008, 10:05 AM)
I think it's safe to say on behalf of SWL (yes, PEW PEW) that we had a lot of fun in this tourney and like a lot of other clans participating, this was our first tourney together. To all the teams that participated, hope you all enjoyed the thing and thanked King Kong at the end.
We enjoyed all our matches very, very much but in very, very different ways. Madlax & Dead6, thanks for playing with us. If you guys want to friendly again, you have our number. =) KcSM, you #$%%@! You guys gave us a bloody heart attack on SnD. =P Still don't believe we let 3 rounds go to let you all level at 7-7. It was really nice getting to know you guys and at the same time playing with so much friggin' tension. Haha.
ESP <oNe>, our only regret was that we didn't bring our SnD hats that day to give you guys a game. I know bloody Adrian was enjoying himself knifing all of us on Crash ("THEY'RE EVERYWHERE!!"). At least Goat has to belanja makan after we won one round on SnD. HAHAHAHAHA SUCKER!!
FsN, we really had fun playing with you guys as well. You all were damn sharp. =P
Just before I go, I want to leave you with some images from the tourney:

and this:
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «
That is probably some of the scariest images I have ever seen.
We're looking forward to playing with all of you again at the next tournament! =)
SWL really had a lot fun. i've never seen a team so jovial in my life. glad u all enjoyed urselves.
n before i end this really long winded reply:
apologies for any inconveniences caused. i know some teams had wait friggin long as i wanted to finish each bracket rather than continue it later in the evening where there would be even more tired teams. no matter how its arranged, some teams will end up waiting.
i'll have passwords in next time. but spectators will be a no-no in future unless monitored from the server or monitored from a proper spectator.
lastly, thank you for all the feedback and comments. it's been great pleasure organizing and meeting everyone in this tourney.
and as for the Eclipse keyboard, i'll announce after im done sunning my clothes. didnt do laundry over the weekend!
