I think I've a similar problem. Going back from 2.0.1 to 1.1.4 a few days ago. All the things worked fine since this morning. After receiving a short message, the iPhone hungs (applications opened and closed immidiately). After a reset the Phone bootes into recovery mode.
DFU Mode is ok, iTunes starts the restore, but after quiting DFU mode the white Apple appears and no spinning wheel comes out. After a few seconds the error code 1604/1603 appears.
I've testes several iTunes Versions and OS X / Vista / XP Systems. Like the thread startet - no chance to get the phone working :-(

I think the phone is missing some files in memory? Is there a way to get it working again? Is there a way to get a clean / fresh Image onto the iPhone?
