There is reverse gear in those cars, but I thought they are not allowed to use on the tracks while  racing (not sure about qualifying).  Remember after the warm up lap(race considered started) if they place the car over the grid line(even if just over) they are penalised.  They cant reverse to be in position even they have the reverse gear.  You can see when they stopped on grass or track edge they have to go back on track using the "doughnut" maneuver.

abt the 'doughnut' manuever...

engaging Reverse in the f1 cars are really hard.. u can see that when nico try to reverse from hamilton's arse and get out of the pit lane..

so drivers tend to do the 'douughnut' whenever they can as to aviod wasting time trying to engage reverse

piquet's case reli cant do anything la... that situation have to use reverse dy....

but if they can, they just prefer to drop to 1st gear and spin the car around, rather and go thru all the complicated steps of engaging neutral and then get reverse and then get back to 1st..

in normal race also, that Blue light will flash whenever got car pass..

abt the whole red light incident is...

when the SC is out.. it makes all 20 cars go slow and they whole line will be very long...like snake..

so when Kimi/Robert/Lewis entered the pitlane.. the guys at the back just oni turn onto the start/finish straight..

then when kimi/robert ready to come out, under safety car, the rule is, all of the 'Snake' must pass by 1st then oni the guys who pit stop can go out..
im not sure why this rule is set.. my guess is that they dun want the cars who pit stop under SC, to gain advantage and go infrnt of cars in the 'Snake' which not yet stop..

so, thats why the light Red.. if u notice.. just abt 5secs after lewis hit kimi, the light turn green.. coz all of the snake already pass..

if they were just few secs slower, this whole situation would have been avoided..

Alonso didnt spin on his mistake.. the gearbox broke which led to him having the spin..
