what's a gerboa? a snake? sorry for my bluntness

i think it's jerboa -.- rodent eh...has cute tail and long hind legs.. nocturnal, fast running and high jumping creature.

yeah i saw it too, was wondering if anyone keeps it. and what are the requirements.

its a desert rodent.. tikus jerboa they call it in malay.. lovely creature but can move damn fast.

This is cute, is it suitable to be raised as a pet?

the national geographic & discovery show cant even get a good video of them..so what makes the pet shop able to get a rare animal here..

I saw it in Pets Wonderland before... It has a long huge leg!! Kesian them being locked up in a small place I saw Jerboa in discovery channel before.. They can run really fast! It will make a clear route during their free time and when it is in danger... it will just use the clear route and run really fast for safety. Like highway like that

This animal is not suitable as a pet. The living requirements is very different from a mongolian gerbil and fat tailed gerbil.

They need space, not just a 2ft tank..... 4ft tank or more. So can someone cope with such a big tank? Also, they are not handle friendly as they will jump as soon as you try to pick them up.

Hamsters are the best

yeah, hamster are way cheap and easy to maintain..gegege

The correct spelling is Jerboa.... some people call them kangaroo rats coz of their long back legs.

Anyway, they are not suitable as pets, that is why we rarely see them in petshops. Also, they are most likely wild caught animals since Jerboas are not easy to breed.

last time i saw this kind of animal at one petshop in petaling street..
their condition at that time too poor, skin..
and i made out the conclusion they are not cute at all compared to gerbil..
but, i like the picture attached by -Nos- above..

Yesterday went to petswonderland@Midvalley saw 1 jebora up for sale, about rm250-rm300. slpping the hole day.... cant get a clearer view of it..

Yes, agree with Crazymouse although Jerboas are quite cute but they are not really suitable as pets unless one can provide them with a big space.

I think the ones at Pet Safari are just newly arrived stocks as there's quite a number of them but being kept in a very pitiful condition, small tank with a few of them in it

Jerboas are nocturnal creature too, thus you will find them sleeping during the day.

Cant play with Jerboa just like playing with hamsters? Can handle with hands? They r fragile?

Don't think can play with them like playing with hamster.

I've seen it being handled, look so awkward because of their long hind legs, looked very hard to stable or stand on your hand.

I think playtime with jerboas is just letting them free and hop around only.

What to feed them btw?

visited so many pet shops... All the Jerboa are slpping..

They are sleeping coz they have nothing to do. Summore taken from the wild.... being locked up with nothing to do, they sleep loh.

Their diet is similar to gerbils, but they drink very little water as they much prefer to take grass and leafy veggies.

what they can do other thn slpping? Unlike hamsters, they can ply wheel.. how bout jerboa?

No wheels, they can't play with any normal hamster toy. They will chew plastic. All they can do is jump and dig. That is why they need BIG tanks to be happy. Also they love tunneling and hiding around rocks and branches.

Coz they don't make good pets and are very hard to breed. That is why lah..... It is better that way anyway. It is best not to have them as pets.

Why those Pets Wonderland always bring in animals that they shouldn't bring

As mentioned, they're nocturnal, that's why most of the time you visit them at the shops you'll see them sleeping.

Yeah, they love burrowing, they can burrow down up to 2.5 meter deep! So not only you will need a big space, but a deep bedding or land for their burrowing



Yes, most big pet shop only think of profit and studies very little about the pets they sell, it's very sad...

Aiyer... Mentioned dy, they're nocturnal lah... So if people understand this, they will understand why they sleep most of the time they see it during the days...

I remember when i 11 years old, my daddy bought me 2 pairs of hamster..
Then they keep birth litters.. Until i have over 100 hamsters..
Then those female 1, born till crazy ady, keep eat those babies..
So i give away all hamsters.. From that time start, i hate hamster liao..
They cute but EVIL Keep eat babies


Now i have,
3 Dogs (1 Shih Tsu mix Pom, 1 Shetland Sheepdog mix Golden - Papa, Mama is Fox, 1 Stray dog that Rescue it from street, when puppy, look like Elephant baby.. No fur n tummy bigbig and black colour , Ear bigbig Lol)
1 Cat
2 Terrapins
2 Taiwan Golden Snails
3 Japanese carps
And 1 tank of colourful little fishes..
I was had 18 different type Gold Fishes, But all Died at Last week, i don't know what happen to them
All So fat and big, but died

Yah, that time they keep birth babies
Then i everyday have to busy with those babies, if not their mum will eat them
I remember one time have a hamster mummy, she birth the baby half, i saw head only..
She ady start eating the baby even the baby hvnt come out all
While she eating while pulling.. So YUCK!!
But when i feed them food.. All so cute.. Like feeding chickens..
They will come together and sit on the plate like little fur balls, many colours so pretty and cute
But hor, i don't dare to touch them Everytime use the fish net to catch them out from fish tank and do cleaning job.

white teeth? As I know, if an adult rodent has white teeth, it means the teeth is weak. All rodents should have yellowish teeth.

yellowish teeth like gigi rosak..LOL. btw, their leg, seems fragile, i always see those in pet shop ones got some wounds here and there..

Thats the disadvantages of Pet Shops.

Kinda sad to see people here who simply assume stuffs about an animal that they don't know anything about.

You think Jerboas don't bite? EVERY animal has the possibility to bite you, even a gerbil. There's no 100% guarantee that an animal won't bite you, the only difference is the percentage of possibility.

Jerboas are WILD animals, what makes you think WILD animals do not bite?

And abang brother, as you said, you're only 15 years old, please grow up and start thinking more maturely and then you'll realize keeping a wild animal is not a wise option. Heck I don't care if you have a field or whatever, these animals live in deserts, and by all means, Malaysia does not have deserts. Malaysia is a tropical country that has a rainy season. IF you really want a Jerboa, do some research because from what I see, you know nothing about them.

Sorry to state the obvious. It just pisses me off when people who don't know anything about a certain animal wants to buy it for the sake of buying/keeping whatever.
