Saturday I going for the Sony Alpha lesson, then Sunday is F1 race day. The organiser really rclxub.gif rclxub.gif rclxub.gif I told him oredi waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in December that it's not a good idea to do it on the same weekend as F1 but he still choose that date. doh.gif

I am letting my 100-400 to one of my friend. He never been to Sepang... I guess the lense will be great for such event.

That lense is great for panning as it provide the extended focal length and IS to stabilise your vertical shaking. thumbup.gif

Go inside? Better to go upstairs, got lotsa nice food n lotsa leng luis everywhere. Then the glasswall looks directly over the refuelling rigs damn chun. Last time I saw the car catching fire sumore. That's the best place to be man.

Did anyone survey the area? Need to bring flash or not? Since I missed the GACC in MMU, thought this would be a good opportunity to attend a cosplay event biggrin.gif

Flash gun is subjective... Depends on your gears and style.

I found one photographer did not use flash at all;

From the exif information, it seems the photographer like to use prime lense. Maybe because aperture big big enought light, so he need no flash gun. cool2.gif

But for general of us like using zoom lenses, I think sure need flash gun la... smile.gif

Exactly. My gear no 2.8 lens, 50mm prime doesn't auto focus so I don't think I'll bring it along since cosplay is quite a fast paced event. So maybe need a flash. Problem is... I don't have lambency yet. Crap.

Don't like to flash direct... Maybe I can bring umbrella then flash into it hahaha.

Those DIY umbrella hard to maintain... espeically around crowded areas over there...

couldn't find the full schedule, but cosplay competition is on sunday. usually they will be cosplayer around on both days, and most of the time the good ones seldom join competition smile.gif

Competition Date: 23rd March 2008 (Sunday)
Registration : 1pm-2pm
Cosplay Competition: 3p-5pm
Prize giving Ceremony: 5.15pm-6pm
Location: 3rd Floor Berjaya time Square.@

If you guys got Demb Diffuser then also good ah. The Flip It will do the reflecting. Otherwise just shoot straight lor. Reduce the flash biasing to blend in with the ambient. Just fill-in enough liao.

BTW should i use center weighted metering instead of matrix ? Since the subject (cosplayer) is usually at the center anyway. Should i use selective area focus instead of auto area focus ? I should have my flashgun since coincidentally i'm gonna buy it this Saturday. sweat.gif

What camera? I usually use selective one... because all selective on 40D is already cross sensor and very reliable.

I do not face exposure issue la... because can see on LCD and compensate ma... tongue.gif

Better keep it in Matrix mode because just in case there are spot lights or unpredictable lighting change. Center mode can be used if you're doing portraits and zoom close close. Not on stage on ya... That one keep it in Matrix mode.

Different camera, lenses sometime also different result... And the subject relative size on frame also make the end exspoure different. And of course the color of thier cloth make the most different...

So far my 40D is ok... I think I compensate around + 2/3 stop... smile.gif

Man was the place crowded. Think the organizers should have prepared a place for cosplayers to take pictures.

I think u saw me today, I'm the one who took Sony a200 and quite tall round 180cm with spec lo....

I only use kitlens 18-70mm... no money to buy lens cry.gif

Still need to pickup the skill coz my white balancing quite poor

This one was taken with the slave flash on camera right, stofen on the flash and pointed direct to vincent's left cheek.
Should be better if the flash was snooted to only focus on small area.

Added on March 23, 2008, 6:43 ammengsuan, you should post up some of the pics you took using my OLD flash.

PS : I did some research and seems like I'm mistaken. This flash is not at least 20+ years old. It's 40+ years Old. It's manufactured in 1965 timeframe!!

I was at cineleisure today for some skirt action. However, I didn't manage to get any good pics. the cheer area to the spectator area too far away and cordoned off too. Even with 1.6x crop factor on a 250mm also cannot get good shots.

I also had to use +3 flash to at least get some brightness using 250mmm f5.6.

I need to re-study my flash manual lah, seems like the flash cannot do multiple burst shots w/ flash adequately.

I was there ~4+pm up till 9+ because of the rain. (but only shot the cheerleaders for like 1+ hour then boring already)

The event was also very slow and not exciting, it was interspersed with Heroes TV series games and quiz and what nots. Bleh!

Hmm... This time I have the worst OOF rate... about 70% of my pictures OOF.... sweat.gif

Maybe the lighting suck... until I have to use flash gun... Maybe ST-E2 help autofocusing better... maybe the flash gun combo was too heavy for me... And yes, my hand shaking... Maybe it was due to I move around and keep shooting... wrong technique...

Anyway, here are some pictures to share... First 50mm vs 85mm...

It might be useful for those thinking to buy either 50mm or 85mm.

Ya... sure... If use f2, sure on la...

I found my 40D + 85L most reliable on;

(1) Day light / Good light and relatively big subject, like half length or 3/4.

(2) If low light, I usually needed my ST-E2 to help the autofocusing. And if nothing much around the person, no problem on

But this time is strange... success rate is rather low... Maybe it is dark + surronding got lots of stuff that confuss the autofocusing sensor.

Anyway, I took numerous of the repeated shots... So does not bother me much... I just post to share my experince. biggrin.gif

I had problems with the 50mm without the help of flash. The surrounding area in the cosplay section was dark but the background usually had lights from the shops or the booths.

By using a large aperture, I find that the lights were blown and it affected the overall feel of the pics.

I had some shots using 50 f1.4 without flash... because flash gun mounted on another body... And I end up deleted all pictures without flash... Just no good... cry.gif

the lighting there really bad, if it was the hall at 6th floor much better, got natural light some more, but apparently they didn't manage to rent the hall.

the lighting there really bad, if it was the hall at 6th floor much better, got natural light some more, but apparently they didn't manage to rent the hall.

It is hard to bounch there... So to me, the diffuser just help to cut down the power, or else at high ISO + large aperture, subject easily over-exposed.

A bit strange on the lighting... because I usually have to +1 on my Omnibounch... But that day... set to zero or -1/3 to get proper exposure. Strange.... rclxub.gif

i saw Joseph Hahn also, play with his D300 hehe. I miss the cosplay competition coz go makan, come back so many ppl infront so cannot get a good place to shoot already

I like the skin exposure of TheVOIP and Ahmike's pictures... everyone else's shots are a tad too dark. (Though Ahmike seems to have more luck with less distracting backgrounds...)

Ya... I agree... You are right...

The background got too much thing liao... Althought are blurred with the help of f1.2... but not clean enought.

The gal keep standing there only... Should be a paid model. So I do not have choice on the background except there...

But if I have a FF camera like 5D, which can give me another 1.3 stops of background blurring power.... The background sure can be cleaner.... drool.gif

And I think my constrast this time is too low... Should set to standard color on my camera rather than faithfull. sad.gif

Much prefer the 2nd student and the shot right after that. I'm thinking, if you came from the other side, should have better background?

The books show the weakness of the 85L. Stand far away from your screen and look, it's quiiite distracting.

If I remember, he is using 1D mark III with 28-300 L.

He has some nice glasses including BIGma.... something like 120-300 f2.8 ! biggrin.gif thumbup.gif

Nope... I have chance to use the 100-400 IS L. Both design are push-pull, but there are differences... like the lense hood. The 100-400 IS L one are deep round hood, while 28-300 IS L is a wide angle flower design.

If I remember well, the guy do not have 100-400 IS L. tongue.gif

honestly, not that i dun want to join or what la... My opinion is, my goals are different, i would like to stick to the same model and work together, improve both my skills and techniques and "her" posing rather than to shoot different girls and stick to the same level of photographing skills.

on the other hand, i find myself loving landscapes and car photography, strobist more than shooting different models. smile.gif It's just me.. no offence to anyone.

i'm not sure about professional photographer, since i'm not one of'em, I highly depends on the mood of shooting. If the model is a presentable one, my mood of shooting will also boost.

I just saw the pricelist update. RM930 for 430EX is a bit steep.
Once again, I want to ask. why choose the 430EX instead of the WAY cheaper Nissin 622 which is RM480 when you only want to use it as slave? The Nissin, AFAIK, also performs the same right? When I was in US and join the local ppl do strobist stuffs, they were (majority) using OLD vivitar flashes with manual control. (but still can control the flash intensity lah)

I also want to do strobist style shooting lah so that's Y i'm asking.

Actually, now, I'm more towards trying to locate some hotshoe adapters for my 2 other OLD flashes and also get some optical sensor/triggers for the flashes.

normal leh, flash takes some getting use to, not only in using it but also the added weight. I am still not fully use to the weight with flash, arm tired after whole day shoot

valho is right...

Higher ISO capture the avaiable lights... and mix more balance between little flash + environment to create the good exposure. It need 2 light sources at least.

The lighting was bad... So even with high ISO, you need flash to cover the shadow on people faces.

what you need is a lambency or a stofen omnibounce... angle it up... then use the suitable iso and meter the background. Maybe you know the technique, but im just putting it up, just in case for those who doesnt know. smile.gif

Dun be shy to use ISO1600 on your D300. It is already a CMOS sensor.... so no worry about noise.

And if you dun shoot like that... you are kind of wasting your D300 capability le... tongue.gif

Imagine a D3 shooter using ISO200 at that event... sweat.gif

Actually the SB-800 already has it's own diffuser similar to Sto-Fen. Lambency bowl ? Is it really that good ? I might consider. How much is it for SB-800 ?

I saw my friend D300 with the omnibounch like diffuser. he said come with the SB800. The results are the worst that I had seen... very harsh... It seems the plastic very slim and small.... should be made-in-china type...

from Shashinki, its stated that is nikon own diffuser, hmmm should be the same as stofen i guess. that little card is more for catch light to the eyes, i dun think its enough to bounce the flash

Yup... That's the same that I had seen.

The end result is bad... I am not talking about bad exposure... but light softness and quality. However, there is still a possibility that my friend do not know how to optimise his gear yet... althought he been shooting for years with good gears like D200/D300 + 17-55 + 70-200 + SB800.

Mine one the reserve... With Gary Fong on my canon 580EX II, I almost always need to compensate +1 or sometime even more....

And this time... Ya... only this time... compensation has to set to 0, which mean default, works perfectly fine... Really kind of unpredictable... rclxub.gif

I admit my Canon a bit unpredictable with Gary Fong... But luckily is consistence... Once I compensate accordingly, need no to change anything. tongue.gif

Yeah man.. D300 has excellent performance under high ISO. very little noise. Very nice pictures turn out. and bright too.

I've seen it in International Camera in Pertama. Listed price = RM200, I got mine from USA for USD40.

Hm yeah but that applies for full time job including benefits? Mine just part time events so I think that's the market price? I'm not sure what's the market price for that actually, not 8hours leh I'm requested to be there from 9am(set up) until 10pm+(sometimes later bcos we have to pack up for the event), 12-13hours per day, break 45mins only.. they only pay me more after I worked with them few times, my 1st event job I only got 120per day

I still remember when the first few Canon dSLR come up... very big and tall one... something like 1 or 2 megapixels only...

Starting I only got 120 per day, now more 140 but still I have to pay for my own meal twice a day so equals to 120 as well ... 12-13hours a day, very tiring some more have to pack up one not stand stand only

rock teddy...your RAW photos are too warm... also the ones before it seem to be not sharp enough... i dunno whether its coz of the slow shutter of just bad compression of the file...

The reasons ur pics not up to par because u dont get ur basics right. Ur shots suffered from very underexposed, dark, unable to control the white balance,sharpness and so on. I have not yet touched ur composition yet.

Well provided u put some effort to improve then i dont see any reason why u cant take any good decent pics. Practice more, and get ur basic right 1st! Good luck
