You guys are going to think I'm nuts but I was playing Celine Dion (stop laughing) and had my PS3 in LPCM mode. I was playing it in TrueHD and was wonderign how it would sound if I switched to bitstream on the fly and got the core DD 5.1 instead of the previous TrueHD with LPCM. I was amazed that I couldn't tell any difference. I was so surprised I had my son do the switching while I closed my eyes and I still couldn't tell the difference.

Then I threw in AC/DC and put it in PCM and put the PS3 in LPCM mode and switched back and forth in the BD menu from DD 5.1 to PCM 5.1. This time there was a VERY slight difference that if I closed my eyes I'd get it wrong probably 5 ot of 10 times(it was that slight).

I even tried Ratatoullie and War and the same thing. During all the test Ior my son always confirmed what the PS3 bitometer was sending as well as the display on my receiver. Then I started thinking, my Pioneer Elite 92TXH (about two months old) has room correction and equalization(MCACC) as well as High Bit Rate Sampling turned on. I decided to turn off the EQ and then all of a sudden I could tell the difference. I did the same test starting with Celine, AC/DC then ratatoullie and WAR all over again and closed my eyes while my son switched from DD or PCM in the menu or while in LPCM and bitstream with TrueHD. Each time I picked the TrueHD or PCM track as the better sounding one.

It appears that on my Pioneer with the EQ on DD 5.1 sounds as good as TrueHD and PCM. I know you'll say I'm crazy but if you leave the EQ on you can't tell but with it off there's a difference. I spend about 1/2 hour doing this and the EQ makes DD 5.1 sound incredible.

Potong steam leh ....... most Fox titles use DTS-MA mah ...... takkan wait till next year for PS3's firmware update with DTS-MA decoding. Most of the big updates take a year one.

This one you gotta ask the BD Camp. They got macam-macam punya audio codecs.

Takes up more storage space not a good thing, the picture quality and special features will take a hit.

Added on March 25, 2008, 3:33 pmIf you can't tell the difference between a 128kb MP3 and a CD, then you won't be able to tell the difference between DD and PCM, there is about the same quality difference(in some cases more with 24bit/96/192khz PCM tracks)

Differences depend on your ears(typically people that are older or have damaged their hearing can't hear very well above 13-15khz, where you do get alot more fidelity with lossless), your system and setup, whether you have trained yourself to hear the differences and finally the quality of the original source material (ie garbage in equals garbage out)

I have encountered some ppl that prefer the sound of compression, whether it is because subtle EQing that occurs with compression(or not so subtle in the case of WMA to my ears) or the cutting down of sometimes annoying highpitch sounds or perhaps they just like the sound of compression artifacts(I have no idea why, just speculation).

The PCM/lossless will ALWAYS be closer to the way the composer/sound effects technician/director/musician/mixer intended it to be heard.

But you should always just listen to what sounds the best to you.
