Yay... fellow crichton fans rclxm9.gif

I actually find the movie version of Timeline more enjoyable. It makes the romance between Andre and Claire more believable as they have more interaction and sparks between them. Of course, the novel has more explanations about the multiverse concept which just cannot be translated onto the big screen.

Speaking of which, does anyone notice that Crichton's works always have crappy, rushed endings? It's like the whole story was built up to a climax and suddenly it just ends abruptly. The novel version of Jurassic Park had such as lousy ending (WTF raptor nest and migration?), and so did Prey which metamorphosed from bio-robotic scifi into a B-grade Hollywood kill'em all finale. Andromeda's Strain's ending was very unexpected too and I feel that the excuse that the microbe has mutated into a non-virulent form seems really sleazy for all the suspense it had been building up.

Yeah man~ Forgering and stealing the decleration of independence... LOL, u think National Treasure copied that? hmmm... debatable...

I'm more of a graphic reader.... Well, what the hell's that? LoL... Graphic readers are people that reads a book and quickly changes each scene into pictures in their head. So it makes reading so damn fun, coz its like watching a movie inside ur head... cool eh? rclxms.gif Jack Higgins is my favourite graphics author, I'm the sound/visual effect editor as I edit the movie in my head... Try it sometime guys, but of course, it'll take an action/adventure book to make the experience worthwhile... Coz once i tried to do that with a mystery type book, i got so confused that at the end of the book, i didn't even know what happened...

My thoughts eh? Hmmm, where to begin? I was introduced to this fine piece of English literature by a friend who is a fan of books of such genre. The Gormenghast Trilogy (in my understandings & research) is an old tale, published somewhere in the 1950s or 60s with a strong Gothic medieval-like setting. It is not stated whether it is set in our world or a fantasy world. The story evolves around events happening in a castle called Gormenghast. Bascially, it's about a lowly cunning kitchen boy (with an agenda) who raise himself to power within the castle ranks with plans to take over. But one individual stand in his way, which is the future heir to throne of Gormenghast.

Many characters featured in this tale are weird, strange and act in their own funny ways (think Discworld). Well, except for the kitchen boy and few others who knows what is actually going on. I was informed the book is very descriptive and slow moving. You will not find action or straight-to-the-point elements in this novel. The book is written in the good old style of English back in those days and it demonstrates the powerful use of the English language. Surely you guys will get he picture.

I'm interested in this book due to the interesting plot, but I'm not very sure if I am able to tackle the writing style of it tongue.gif . That sums up my thoughts on it.

Isaac Asimov... really hard to get his books.

Try his short stories if you can find them, "The Billard Ball" is absolutely stunning, while I love "The Dead Past" and "Nightfall" a lot too.

Guys guys guys!! Time to come up with not so popular authors.. We all know the highly rated Grisham, Sheldon, Brown and etc. works... but come on, show us something new, some authors which are mostly unheard of but still a good read.

Lemme start first, - Read this book by Walter Sorrells (Nvr Evr Heard of the guy) His book was pretty amazing in the end, the plot was carefully done, the suspense and twists were unexpectedly great!! Definitely will find more of is books.

I got my hardcover Children of Hurin at MPH's warehouse sale for under RM25.00 IIRC. Great book at a great price.

Be sure to keep an eye on MPH's sales. Look hard enough and you'll find some great gems.

Have you guys read about this local author Lim May Zhee who published her book at the age of 15 before?
I'm reading her book now.. I find it rather amusing =) she tends to write with her sarcastic style..

2) Sweetheart From Hell

When i cant get enuff of the movies, i read the novels. laugh.gif

I totally dig James Luceno's prequel and sequel novels to SW EpIII: RoTS, Labyrinth of Evil and Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader.

I also have read Timothy Zahn's latest, Allegiance.

I read the dark lord, pretty interesting. I also read Darth Bane : Path of Destruction. I have Death Star which I haven't read yet.

While entertaining, the SW novels feels pretty corny at times with the same cheesy dialogue taken from the movies...

Yea Yea Similarions is a good one currently reading it. It tells you how men drawes and elves ents were created. Just finish the HOBBIT not long ago, its nice book you know did not expect a war at the last part.

Another series that i like is Warcraft. There is this series that splits into 3 books. Its really exciting

Yes, that I do agree. laugh.gif

The dialogues can get a little corny sometimes, but I still find myself lost in the wonderful universe George Lucas created when I read the novels or watch any of the movies.

Does no one like classics anymore? tongue.gif Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Importance of Being Earnest (okay technically that's a play, not a book); Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion; Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird were just amazing.

...seems like some of the best authors I've ever read are either dead or nearly-dead (ahem brows.gif).

Same same! Both book and movie were great. Pardon me while I do the oh-my-god-I-love-Mr-Darcy thing biggrin.gif

Yea I've heard lots of people say that Mockingbird was too slow to finish. But I personally really liked it. Then again, that could be because I plan to study Law, and Atticus Finch was way too cool a lawyer to abandon the story.

I LOVE Oscar Wilde and I don't think To Kill A Mockingbird was slow, it got really fast towards the ending.
Have you read The Secret Life of Bees? The main character's personality is an echo of Scout, because the author is a fan of Harper Lee. It's about racial issues too (sort of)

I'm currently reading Kim by Rudyard Kipling.

now i am a fiend after r.a salvatore's drizzt series..anyone reading it here??..i find it compelling..and i think i am a little too old to read this sort of fantasy book..tongue.gif

gives me a hell of time to collect all of the books released so far..except the transition series of course..because it is a little too expensive for me...especially love the cover of 'the two swords'..

Huge fan of Drizzt here, I have every book up to the Orc King, currently waiting for the Pirate King to come out in softcover. Huge changes abound for our dear Drizzt as the forgotten realms heads towards 4.0.

I'm currently reading Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun. Not sure how famous Gene Wolfe is in our neck of the woods, but this guy is an AMAZING writer. Probably one of the greatest living writers regardless of genres. Even if you're not a sci-fi/fantasy fan, I highly recommend picking up some of his books for the pure pleasure of reading a well crafted, well written piece of prose.

After I finish with this I'm gonna start on Jack Vance's Songs of Dying Earth collection. Got lucky and found it in Borders the Curve on Christmas day. Glee!
