town center mah george town lor.

Gurney drive go up Bt Feringghi not that far la but just that not advisable to speed lor.

AFAIK Mar Vista is like condo, not hotel (stayed there before but like more than 10 years back)

If you want to stay near Gurney hawker center, try la places like G hotel. or further up there's Evergreen, The Gurney and Northam.

As a Penangnite, let see how I can help here...

Shopping:
Note: We are nowhere near the fancy KL, Klang Valley and Selangor.

All we have here is:
1) Queensbay Mall - about 75% the size of Midvalley (excluding Gardens). Not much people there unless it's weekends and public holiday. A lot of shops situated there and Penang Island one and only Jusco is there.

2) Gurney Plaza - This is our "in" place and Penang's flagship shopping complex. I can say it's our 1-U and with a new wing coming up this August, expect more stuff to 5) be coming in.

3) Prangin Mall - This is another "category" of shopping. Well, to make things easy, this is considered Penang's "Sg. Wang" to a lesser extent. Cheap, tacky and rare stuff are all there. This is the place to go if you want to see another face of Penang or buy IT Stuffs.

4) BJ Complex and Midlands - These are the two "fallen" complexes, much like Subang Parade a few years ago. I wouldn't expect them to be revitalize again unless somebody really rich comes in to buy over them. This is also another place to get IT Stuffs.

5) Komtar - I felt embarassed to say anything about this. This place is basically almost dead if it wasn't for the offices for the state government and authorities are still there. 20 years ago this is the de facto most happening place in Penang.
then there's 1 ah, as you drive from GD up to BFerringhi / T Bungah, you'll see this shopping complex on the right side.

and what about Sunshine Square? Still alive ah? hehe. Gama also like ghost building already.

well, at least E-gate there has a TESCO for grocery shopping. smile.gif

should be la. one of the more recent shopping complexes.

ahh i still remember last time
- Bukit Jambul so "heng" with the ice-skating.
- Komtar was shopping haven. nowadays ah..........aihh
- Midlands also, once i stayed around the hotel there. the shopping complex also not so nice already.
- Sunshine Square, if not mistaken has one of PG's earliest cineplex.

Northam is furthest from the Gurney's hot area (eg, near Gurney Plaza)

I stayed at The Gurney the most. Rates are good and i love the facilities (archery, swimming, gym.......). I haven't stayed in Evergreen Laurel and G-Hotel so can't compare them.

I stay at Gurney Hotel, quite far away from Gurney Plaza although it's just down along the road. I think the price there is cheaper. Rooms have broadband internet access. Breakfast is great. RM 240++
i think can get less than that. depending on the promotion, and what card you're holding. biggrin.gif

If drive from KL, where to exit in penang ah? I wan to go by ferry. So exit which tol?
the exit you can't miss la. biggrin.gif seriously, seeing AutoCity is a good sign.

just that if you want ferry ride, DO NOT go towards the BRIDGE lane, it's stated by the signboard.

you have to travel towards the industrial area (Seberang Jaya there), just stop by for directions if need. you can't get lost going to Ferry, there are directions too.

prepare RM 10 for the ferry right (it's RM 7.70 to be exact..........)

reach there, just follow the line and wait for your turn to embark on the ferry. smile.gif

after driving off the ferry (once you're docked la) then up to you la, turn left to head south of the island, turn right to head north to places like Gurney Drive and other northern coastal areas.

evergreen is nice hotel
*
dude, he wants BEACH la.

that water front of Evergreen is NOT considered a beach. tongue.gif

For beach hotels, no choice la you just have to travel up Tanjung Bungah / Batu Ferringhi and scout the hotels.

Remember that it's not just the price but you need to study the other details like the ambient, food, service, parking and so on so forth.

the hotels are plenty, the funny thing about PG beach side hotels is that they change name quite often, or at least to me it is. biggrin.gif

btw forget about G Hotel / Evergreen / Gurney cos they're at Gurney Drive, not beach front.

if you travel up, you'll see hotels like Copthorne - it's not at the beach either, cos the beach you have to take lift or walk down the stairs to reach - that also minimal coastline.

If you cannot afford Rasa Sayang/Hard Rock, you should look Park Royal (300++) or Holiday Inn (200++).Too bad my favorite hotel there are closed for renovation. All located at Bt Feringghi. Elsewhere, opt for Tg Bungah, Paradise Sandy Bay or Copthorne Orchid may be suit your budget. Bt Feringghi more happening at night because got Bazaar for look and see tongue.gif

but like what i mentioned, copthorn not at beach la. smile.gif to reach the small shore you have to take lift.

Anybody tell me what are the 'must-stop' food pit-stop along the way from KL to Penang??? E.g I know there's a famous seafood restaurant @ Bukit Tambun (if I'm not mistaken) which sells weird but delicious siput like the 'helicopter' siput. Any other cool stops along the journey that you can suggest???
can stop by Ipoh / Taiping. biggrin.gif

yeah Gurney Plaza it is, higher class than QB la.

if you're from KL - none of them are worth visiting. tongue.gif cos feels like in KL only.

i only visit QB cos explore new place. after that never go already.

Gama still doing ok ah? smile.gif my childhood shopping area. tongue.gif back when Komtar was still a busy place.

and Paragon still not open yet? hrmrmr. The selling point of Gurney Plaza has always been that it's linked (in some way) with G Hotel. it has decent F&B choice within and outside of it. There's the food court nearby and there are other places along the roads.

Yea.. I think Gama is doing much better than Pacific in Komtar (which has nobody going there from what I hear)... Komtar should have kept its Sungei Wang feel.. I think a lot of people enjoy that kind of place...

Komtar got pacific? biggrin.gif i went to Komtar a few years back also feel so creepy. you know the entrance near the temple there, go up the stairs..... not even halfway also got this eerie silence, which was so unlike back in the 90s.

back then they even have Carls Jr (i think) with KFC and MCD (both near center court). McD side leads to Super while KFC wan was near Parkson or something.

Bukit Jambul also last time hot a while then last i went also like dead.

One Stop also looks great when it opened with Dave's Deli (1st day already it's there, my 1st time eating Dave's also) then but now also look so lousy.

QUOTE(azxel @ Jun 7 2010, 07:05 PM)
No idea where Paragon is opening but judging from the development of a few companies.. there are more malls to come within this 5 years.. LOL

cos Paragon I see work done quite a lot already when I was in Penang around June last year.
