What is the thinking behind this idea? hmm.gif

Hmmm, I wondered too... Normally, people would ask whether to stay in Georgetown or Batu Ferringhi...and some would split their stay in these two parts..

One thing that I am not sure on is the parking.  Penang is still using the coin parking meter and if I park at a lot then realize that the coin meter is not working.  Should I just leave it or find a lot with a workable coin meter.  Will I get a parking fine if the coin meter is not working?
*
I parked at one of those lot just 2 weeks ago, behind Oriental Hotel, Leith Street. Didn't realise meter rosak until after I parked and wanted to slot coins. So, I asked the laundry shop uncle to help me jaga and reason with if saman people come. He told me, no worry la, nvm wan, meter spoilt, wont kena saman wan. Later, I heard other people say, not suppose to park at those meter rosak lot....

To be honest, that's a good question!  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  But public buses ply this area, no? Although i must say that the routes on the Rapid Penang site seem pretty complicated  :sweat :
and taxi are rare in those areas?
other than that relatively inaccessible location that is Balik Pulau, i think getting around in Georgetown is pretty convenient..

I kinda planned out my route for the the hawker food mentioned here .. generally it stretches from Jalan Burma and into Jalan Penang.. main mode of transport would be on foot..

As for seafood, Sea Pearl Lagoon Seafood came up in the food forum. That seems pretty good.. and near Batu F too..
*
If time is not an issue, take bus, BF to Teluk Bahang[101/102], Teluk Bahang to Balik Pulau[501]. Choice of
return via Georgetown, take bus Balik Pulau to Pengkalan Weld[401], then back to BF[101].

Otherwise, hire a taxi, the rate is RM25/hour, including waiting time, minimum 4hrs.

Yes, time will be of no issue. I will be here for 6 days  rclxm9.gif
Where exactly will the bus stop at Balik Pulau? I guessing that once there, cabs will be few and far in between .. am i right?
at least this is a place where locals go to.. can't say the same for the rest on Batu f that i've came across ..
*
I'm doubt that there'll be taxi at Balik Pulau, you could walk around the town easily. Ask the bus driver to let you alight at the pekan- basically, it's just one main street where the laksa/nutmeg juice is, and a row of old shophouses, and the small roundabout. The bus terminal itself, is at Jalan Tun Sardon, 5.351350, 100.239703, next to it, is the Market Complex where you can buy local products like belachan, shrimp paste, nutmeg oil, keropok and jeruk. If you alight at the bus terminal, it's about 450m to walk back to the main Jalan Balik Pulau.

I'd suggest that you get hold of the Rapid Penang customer service's phone number, you could call and ask when is the next bus coming if you waited too long.

Without car, you could probably just cover the Balik Pulau town, and not the rural area. Btw, the laksa stall that is next to the Old Market closes on Wednestday.

at this stage we got no car. might buy one in future.. still looking for a suitable car

she prefer place just for herself. meaning single room..
*
Maybe check with IPG if they do assist in finding accommodation? Or, if IPG do provide hostel, then may consider temporary stay in the hostel first then take some time to find suitable "room for rent" around the area.

Anyone here from Penang? I would like to know if bus service frequency stated at RapidPenang website is reliable?
*
Depends on which bus route. Town areas' buses are more realiable. There's a Rapid bus phone number. if you think the bus is "late", you could call up to ask what happened.

hello guys! can i take a bus from penang islang to taiping directly? or I have to go to butterworth first?

There are buses from both side. But if you are in Georgetown, it is nearer to take a ferry across to Butterworth to take the bus to Taiping.

Looking for a beach hotel price range around +-150, looking at Hyrdo Hotel at Miami beach, anyone has any other suggestiosn?
*
I wouldn't consider Hydro Hotel as a "beach" hotel, coz it's not situated at the beach side but rather at the hill side. To get to the beach, one needs to walk out of the hotel, walk down the slope and use the pedesterian overhead bridge to get across the road.

For a beach hotel that fits your budget, you probably can check on hotels at Tanjung Bungah, eg Flamingo Hotel or Copthorne Orchid Hotel.

Within Komtar and Khoo Kongsi, any nice place to VISIT or EATING ?
*
If you want to go to Prangin Mall from the Airport, take Rapid bus no. 401E or no. 401 and alight at the bus stop at Jalan Lintang. You may check on rapidpg's website for the route and schedule.

I just been Penang.
Just some info to share to all.

Taking Rapid Penang Bus Service is convenient & easy in Penang than KL.
I take Bus No. 401E from Airport to Komtar. As informed Bus No. 102 also go Komtar.

From Komtar, I'm try walking to find Khoo Kongsi, unfortunately, it's like a mazed in that area, back & fourth couldn't find it.
Found one but not Khoo Kongsi though  rclxub.gif
In the end, some one guide us again, i give up though cause need walk again back few road.
So we continue go through Jetty, then to Swetteham Pier, that where I need go.
So, we are walking from KOMTAR to SWETTEHAM PIER and carrying our luggage too, damn hot sun too.

When back from Swetteham Pier, we took Trishaw to JETTY, fares RM10, but we pay him RM20.

Then we took Bus No. 401E from JETTY to QUEENSBAY MALL, fares RM2.00 per person.

Around 4pm, we take  QUEENSBAY MALL to AIRPORT, fares RM1.40 per person.

Very Easy, just ask Driver smile.gif  icon_rolleyes.gif

Very interesting adventure. Maybe you could visit Penang again some other time.

May I know what is the recommended transport for 4 people from Penang airport to Golden Sands Hotel?

Thanks

If 4 pax but with 3 luggages only, then airport taxi (coupon system) is MYR70 to Golden Sands.

A few Pit Vipers on the plants at the courtyard of the temple. But no snakes at the main hall nowadays as the care takers are now aware that the smokes from the joss sticks will harm the snakes. There is a Snake Farm within the temple complex, and for a minimum fee (I think is RM3 form MyKad holder), one can see more snakes and some reptiles there.

no need register, just tell the person in charge at counter near the entrance (maybank there). She will then guide you to the 60th floor.  rclxms.gif

Ok, thanks. Went up there before, when it was a restaurant. So, looks like now it's been converted as a observation deck. Is it only for the view? What else on that floor now?

goin to penang on mid feb..

hows the dining in the hard rock cafe?

looking for some dining cz my fren bday. any recommendation? better come with hows the pricing biggrin.gif

Just an example to give you the idea:

We were 3 girls, average eater, so we ordered the hickory Trio combo (meat dish) and a salad to share, plus 3 lemonade, the bill came to RM$150...

There's a alcohol and cocktail drinks menu, these drinks would cost more, RM$30+, for the "normal, cheaper" drinks, look for a separate drinks menu(with soft drinks, coffee etc).

Let the waiter/waiteress knows that you are celebrating birthday, and there's a slice of cake on the house, plus the DJ will make announcement for all diners to sing the Birthday Song.

I went car free day last sunday and DAFUQ!!

There only like 10 ppl there. Few kids cycling tricycle and 3 or 4 guys playing roller blades. Its like ghost town fail

The time is around 9 -10am
*
After all, it's not a real Car Free Day anyway - it's more like Road Block Day...kind of like motorised vehichles are not allowed on that stretch of road on Sunday morning.

Who would want to drive to that area, park the car at the designated carpark then walk or hang around the empty road?? Well, unless there's some activities/events going on, then maybe got crowd la..

By the way, the so called Car Free Day has been shortened to half day+, not whole day..

Guys,

Can recommend a hotel nearby to Penang famous foodie, and attractions? I read through this thread, and found that taxi is very expensive. But, we got no intention to rent car too. Hence, hoping someone can guide us on this.

Will be staying in Penang for two nights before depart to Langkawi. Thanks!
*
Hotel nearby food - plenty, what's your budget? Besides the above mentioned Cititel, Penang Sunway Hotel.

Attractions wise, if you do not want to take taxi and do not want to rent a car, take Rapid Pg buses. There's also free CAT bus around Georgetown Heritage area. How many of you travelling? If there are 3 or 4 people, consider hiring a taxi by the hour - RM25-30 per hour.
