Thanks. But the room rate is beyond my budget. My budget is <RM300/night (all inclusive).
My budget is <RM300/night (all inclusive). I travel with my spouse, so 2 pax.
Thanks for the info.

Btw, can we access these hotel from airport by bus? If yes, which bus should we take? Thanks!

Another "old" hotel is Hotel Oriental, the rate should be within your budget. It's at the junction of Penang Road and Chulia Street, location quite strategic too - 2 mins walk to Line Clear Nasi Kandar...

Bus no. 401E goes from airport to town, you can check the route from rapidpg.com.my Taxi from airport to hotel in Georgetown would cost RM40.

guys, i will be going to penang on this fri. will be staying at tune. any idea how to get there from the airport? i seldom go to penang so need your advise, plus i might be arriving at night time. if take taxi will it be costly? pls advise. sorry for being spoon fed here cos i'm running out of time. going to penang for interview. so not much time left. pls advice.thanks

Taxi fare from airport to Tune Hotel - RM40 (good for 1-4pax wtih 3 baggages). Additional 40% for pickup between 10pm to 7am. At the airport, buy the taxi coupon at the taxi counter then queue for the airport taxi, give the coupon to the driver.

Any other nice recommendation for hotel somewhere nearby or same location as Tune?

If looking for batu feringghi, got any low budget around rm100 to rm150 per nite?
*
There's one called PPisland Hotel at Abu Siti Lane.

For low budget, got guesthouses at Batu Feringghi. However, I do not recommend staying at BF if you intend to spend more time in town area. If want somewhere in between, maybe can consider Tanjung Bungah area.

hahahaha, didnt read this, went on 6th and just came back ystd. Yes, i stay in PPisland for 2 nites. Overall location is good but the problem is the parking. 1nite was lucky to get one provided by hotel but 2nd nite need park far down the road.

Besides noise coming from the back "foodcourt" but still minor problem. Still able to sleep hahahaha..

i can say its good for food hunters..

Ha ha, interesting indeed - been and back liao baru read that I recommended the hotel that you've stayed.

Can someone please tell what is the approximate GPS coordiantes of Balik Pulau and what's the name of the shop for Asam Laksa? Thanks
Holiday apartment. Aurora Court vs Desa Pelangi. Which is better? Or any other alternatives

There are two laksa stalls. The one next to the old market is called Kim Laksa, the other one is just opposite in another coffee shop. Check this out(with GPS coordinates):

oic...do they observe the scheduled time?..i mean, is there a scheduled time at the first place?..or we just have to wait at the bus stop and pray that the next bus will just popped up anytime soon?.. if there's a scheduled timetable, and then they being 10 minutes late still ok...still acceptable as I won;t expect the public transport here to be like in Melbourne.. tongue.gif But, is there a scheduled time at the first place? and do they follow it?
hmm.gif hmm.gif

Yes, there's a time table, but certain bus route seems to be more reliable than others. In Georgetown, the free shuttle service call CAT that runs through the herritage area is quite on time.

Main problem of bus not running on schedule in Penang is when there's a bus breakdown, or lack of driver. I know this coz my dad does take bus, and when the bus he normally takes doesn't come on time, he would call the Rapid Hotline and inquire. The Rapid Customer Service would track the bus and tell him the ETA of next bus.

If one intend to take bus, I suppose that first of all, one must be on a leisure, flexible, non-hurry trip. It ain't going to make it if one's itinerary is all packed and rush and still wants to take buses around - might end of spending more time waiting for buses...

Another option to tour around Penang if not taking bus or do not want to self-drive is to hire a taxi for the day, the price is RM25-30 per hour, usually, minimum 4hrs(including waiting time). If bigger group, van hire is about RM30-35 per hour. Most taxi drivers are good to advise or bring you to popular hawker food.

hmm.gif by the sound of it, looks like the bus service there is still not too bad..and can b relied on..esp with the free shuttle around... smile.gif I did take a look at the penangtripadviser.com website..the bus seems to pass thru all the tourist attraction place like kek lok si, bukit bendera...

so if the bus tat i was on passes by, i just drop in and visit..and then after the visit, hop on the next bus and go home...i guess this arrangement is manageable in Penang rite?.. smile.gif

Please visit the official bus, ie Rapid Penang's website for bus info. There's only one type of free shuttle, and it only runs in the town area -mainly the heritage site. Kek lok si, bukit bendera this are not in town, need to take other buses.

@fastreader,

Yes, can take bus from airport to hotel in Georgetown area, but must know which bus stop to alight and might need to walk quite a distance from bus stop to hotel, or might need to take the bus to the end, ie Weld Quay, then take another bus that runs near the hotel.

Yes, bus is feasible as mode of transport for Penang tourist. However, as I mentioned before, one must be realistic with his/her itinerary, and is on a leisure, no-hurry, flexible trip.

You might even take buses to do a round Penang Island trip if you have time - one bus from Weld Quay to Teluk Bahang, another bus from Teluk Bahang to Balik Pulau, then bus from Balik Pulau back to Weld Quay.

@fastreader

Weld Quay is a bus terminal, I can't think of any decent hotel near to the bus terminal. Another place where all buses pass thru is Komtar, it's good to catch a bus there too. Depends on your budget, may look for hotels that are along Jalan Penang or Lebuh Chulia, where you can catch the free CAT to either Weld Quay or Komtar to take other buses.

hi...im planning to go to penang in Dec 2012. wondering if 3d2n is enough? expecting reaching Penang late noon dy coz i will be driving from Melaka. bringing one 2 year old girl.  smile.gif

also, has anyone heard of Deluxcious Heritage Hotel? rolleyes.gif from the website, really looks good. appreciate feedback, on the cleanliness (since it is quite new, i guess should be pretty clean), location (strategic?) and value for money?  rolleyes.gif the family suite and junior suite comes with jacuzzi!  thumbup.gif

Considering the fact that you'll be driving all the way from Melaka, 3d2n can be quite rushing coz you only have one full day in Penang. If add one more day/night, would be more relax lor..

Hi... I read that New Lane Hawker Centre is closed every Wednesday? Is it true?
*
Don't know about this. But, there are plenty of food further down the main road, ie Jalan Macalister. Look for the kopitiams (along the main road, in between 2 side lanes - Lorong Selamat and Jalan Rangoon), about 300m from New Lane.

Alright.

I'll most likely make the trip up in the early mornings and avoid requiring to stop. Will aim for a 7-8am arrival at Penang or something. So that should be about a 2-4am departure.
*
Drive safely, and don't fall asleep. If there's going to be a traffic jam, it's going to jam regardless of timing..coz traffic jam is not only due to heavy traffic, some times is road factor(closing one lane for repair etc), or some times because of road accident. And be prepared for the chaos when you reach Penang island.

Have a safe journey.

Hi guys,I will be going to Penang with my friends(total 8 of us) on the 27th till 29th this month.

The current dilemma is...should we rent a car for traveling when reach there?
We plan to rent a mpv for 1 day(28th) to travel around but none of us actually knows the road, but we will have a gps.

As I heard from my cousin,Penang has a lot of one-way which will be quite hard to turn back if we got into the wrong direction. He also said that Rapid can send us to most of the tourist spot but we will have to wait for buses.

Even with cars,we will just travel the northern half of the Penang.

So,heres a summary:
Car
Pros: Time saving,travel more freely
Cons: More expensive(especially if something happened to the car,we have to bear the cost <touchwood>),not familiar with the road (sometimes gps also not trustable tongue.gif ),heard Penang drivers are very reckless,no offense  biggrin.gif

Bus
Pros: Cheaper,not easily lost
Cons: Time consuming

Please help us decide regarding this notworthy.gif
Thanks in advance
*
Taking into the consideration the cost of renting MPV, plus petrol, plus parking fees, and the "cons" that you stated, might as well hire a van with driver. The rate is about RM$35-40 per hour, including waiting time.

And if you are staying in town area, not necessary to drive, most of the eateries are within walking distance, also, more buses.

I've book a room for 2 nights in flamingo for the coming weekend.. I wonder is the hotel good or not. Important things to me are cleanliness, parking, presentable.

Any other recommendation? I'm looking at golden sand resort as well. Still considering whether should I really top up for the difference. Thanks.
*
IMO, Flamingo Hotel is good enough. Or can have a look at the Rainbow Paradise Beach Resort next to Flamingo Hotel.

Golden Sand is further away, and if you intend to spend more time in the town area, it's going to take up some travelling time..

Yea, I guess its approx. 30 minutes ++ of driving distance from the Airport. Sigh .. unsure.gif
*
Just take the taxi from Airport. It goes by coupon system, go to the taxi counter at the airport, purchase the coupon then proceed to take the taxi (just give the coupon to the driver). It's fixed price, don't have to worry about the "taxi not using meter" stuff...

The last I checked, airport to town area budget taxi fare is RM40.
