hihi... i'm new in this forum. wanna ask the experts regarding ST's diet notworthy.gif . I know n have read alot on the net about their diet..but i got difficulties in understanding the scientific names..am wondering if experts here can share the chinese common name for the veggies n stuff? names that i can find in supermarket or wet market.. cos i got problem in getting grasses n such for my ST to eat leh...haiz.
- Not try to be an experts here but i think you can search it in TTT Version 1 or 2 about the Chinese Common name of the veggies. Got some1 allready give out the LINK which you can use as reference. If im not mistaken, some1 also got mentioned about this on few back pages. You can to check it out... Welcome to LYN TTT Club  smile.gif

(PS. burmese ST diet same as Indian's? mine is burmese leh.. n oh, i havent measure, roughly ard 4cm ba.. haaa)
- Dont mind to share us your Burmese ST pictures?

1 more thing, i've been feeding my ST mostly with kangkong. n also some carrots n pumpkin..n twice a week mix with canned herbs..eh, pellet? so wat i'm asking is if kangkong can really be given to ST daily? and any other type of veggie that i can get easily at supermarket?
- From what i know, Kangkong is not good to feed the tortoise. Its will 'BIND' the Calsium from being absorb by the tortoise body. End up will come out as the white poo. I do feed my tortoise with carrots once awhile. Pumkin is very good as a dewormer. I feed my tortoise with pumkin twice a month.... Why dont you feed your ST with 'SAWI' one of the easiest veggie that you can find here....

ohoh, 2 more thing, issit true that egg shell can be powdered n sprinkled on veggie for ST consumption? and i realise my little ST's skin abit dry, more daily soaking needed right?
- Never try the egg's shell, but quite reasonable becoz there is calsium for the shell. I use Cuttle Fish Bone..... I just let the big size tortoise bite the cuttle fish bones & i make it powdered & sprinkle on the vegggie for the small size tortoise.
- Do you polish your tortoise's shell?

hehehe  biggrin.gif  thanks thanks!

ishyshy...

I strongly suggest you to post some pictures for your Star Tortoise here. Lets the 'seniors' here see & make sure its really Burmese Star or not. As what i know, its very2 hard to get the Burmese Stars nowdays in Malaysia. Are you from Malaysia or?

I do agree with SamPerth, some sellers might tell their customers that their stars are Burmese Star to attract people to buy from them while actually its just an Indian Star or might be Sri Lankan Star.... unless you are really know how to diffrenciate between Burmese Stars, Indian Stars & Sri Lankan Stars.

Here is the picture of Cuttlefish Bone. You can get it from pet shops or at Chinese Medicine Shops ( more cheaper ) tongue.gif

You also can give this to you tortoise... Inside got D3 which tortoise needs smile.gif

Frankly, i never see any baby Burmese Star yet, only for the medium size or consider an adult. Mr. Samperth allready give you the details to defrentciate it. I hope everythings are clear. You also can see the picture of Burmese Stars which i've posted in few pages back.

About the veggies... Your ST still small... They wont it so much & some more its new for the tortoise. So, its will take time for them.

Do you provide your ST with basking lamp & UVB lamp?

You can visit this website if you wanna know more about other vegetables which can feet to your TTT

em,i didnt dare to say,ha3 laugh.gif nevermind, wait for the others comment.im also newbie here.. smile.gif did u use cat litter sand for ur ST bedding?if u use it,i didnt say it not good for ur ST.but from my experience,if we use that sand as substrate,it will swallowed by our ST coz it easy to stuck or attach with food that we feed our ST.and it can cause impaction to our ST.i have seen skatila's baby poo with a lot of that sand in their shit because their owner before just use cat litter sand as substrate.i just share my experience,if u dont use it,just ignore my word..ha3 thumbup.gif hope ur ST really burmese one..it really difficult to see them in our place..
*
I do agree with you slackerz. I had the same experience too. So, its really not recommanded to use the Cat Litter Sand as the substrate.
I always suggest my friends to use Cat Litter Recycle Paper as their pets substrate. Its safety & can help to maintain the HUMIDITY too

many forumer also suggest me to use that brand..i use that and it really2 super duper absorber..ha3.but it can cause dust if we use it for a long time without change it.so mesti mau bersih la..btw,much better than sand.
*
Yeah... You need to put 'TEBAL' sikit like 3 - 4 inches... then only the dust will drop down & stay at the bottom part of the tank. Its can last for 1 - 3 months... But its depends on how many of your tortoise & your tank size too.

I dont think he intend to bluff you But the price tag should give some hint on whats being sold

Any price tag from RM 60 - 180 for that 2 + incher Star is bound to be an Indian Star

Burmese star babies will be about 10 X more !!! ie RM 1500 a pc
*
Yeah. Im agree with SAMPERTH... RM1500 a pc is the cheapest for Burmese Star that i heard so far, there might be higger than that price with this current situations.

Anyway, those sellers especially those pet & aquarium shops people sometime dont even know what type of tortoise that they are selling. Last time during ST still can sell openly, those pet shops people just say "This Tortoise easy to keep one... Just CINCAI feed them with long beans, 'Timun'... Taugeh also can... No problem" They dont even know the right way to take care this ST & never tell their costumers about basking lamp, UVB & Humidity....

ishyshy..
Dont worry about been cheated or not... even its Indian or Sri Lankan Star Tortoise, its still a nice tortoise to keep as your pet. You should feel happy having it as your pet, because nowdays... even u have money, its still not sure you can get it easily. We all here are willing help & guide you about to give a good care for your TTT

*
I give my tortoise fresh pumkin. You can cut them to small pieces or use 'sagat' will be more easier for your tortoise to 'NGAP'

Those laws just a "ticket" for them to earm more money tongue.gif
I dont see Star Tortoise is having "kepupusan" We all saw there are plenty ST in the market before. How come they can say ST is having "kepupusan" ??? Thats Funny laugh.gif
People sure keep in pairs & sooner they gonna breed them like what our friend chintat83 doing. So its will be more & more ST will come out...
Another reason they came out with this laws is to protect those seller too, when ST hard to find in the market, the price will in crease like 'boom'
So, the victims are people like us, the TTT lover sad.gif
But now i allready retired, so no need to worry so much about the prices increase.... whistling.gif

it is suppose to effect everyone. if we keep buying, then the number will keep decrease. as long as the law is going strong, less ppl will get, demand lower, then seller will decrease the intake, which reduces the amount of tortoise or turtle taken from the wild.
*
Those Star Tortoise which are selling in the market mostly are CB... not WC wor... how can you said it reduces the amount of the TTT from the wild??? hmm.gif

Unless those TTT are selling to those 'idiots' which didnt do any research before buy them. Then the TTT will endup sick, then die tongue.gif

They suppose issue the LAW for WC animals.. not for CB animals laugh.gif

JonYeap...

You tell me who can go to India or etc to collect hundred or more babbies for Star Tortoise around 2 - 3 inches then bring back & sell for the whole Malaysia market ??? hmm.gif
Of course those Star Tortoise which are selling around before are CB not WC laugh.gif
You cannot compare between TTT & Snakes. Its totally diffrent smile.gif

There are many TTT breeders outside... Star Tortoise wont endangered becoz those breeder will keep breeding & breeding becoz of demanding.
BUT now... Once the new law came out, low demand & those breeders sooner will stop breed their Star Tortoise... Sooner, Star Tortoise will become REALLY endangered even in CB populutions.

Can you all imagine, they allready endangered in their own natural habitat & also endangered in CB habitat. I think later our grand children dont even know how Star Tortoise look like.... unsure.gif
How sad sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

Im agree with you SAM... They never take action & do something on those Wild Habitat but just care about their own pocket tongue.gif tongue.gif tongue.gif

is the sea turtle breeding place. but at last how?? become poluted and tourism attraction!! huh!!!
*
Talk about the Rantau Abang project. i feel it so funny, how come they simply let go those baby turttles just like that, they suppose keep it awhile until the size bigger like 6 inches or 10 inches... then only let go into the deep sea.
But when those small babbies direct go into deep sea, those big fish & etc are ready standby to eat them laugh.gif
The project is good but the way they doing it is not right... doh.gif doh.gif doh.gif
