If you have time to worry about other ppl's kit, you should've used that time to woodshed or get a better-paying job.

Even if you're not a very good guitar player, if you can compose cool songs/tunes/riffs you're already one up even the most technical player.

biggrin.gif

Personally, I value more the quality of the melody/rhythm/ than the technique/gear.

well if that 'noob' is determined to be a good player, then i've got his back supporting him to be. life isnt fair, but for him/her who is fortunate enough to start on good equipments, at least itll be easier for him/her to improve as a musician.

on the other hand, its not like i myself own freaking awesome techniques (unlike gapnap!). ive got intermediate level gear and even with that, sometimes i dont feel my standard of playing deserves the gear. (or maybe thats the psychological effect for working so hard to pay for my own gear).

Gibson Zakk Wylde??? OMG you sure it ain't the china made ones? LOL Nevermind la.. when he's bored of it he'll sell you cheap cheap. biggrin.gif

Seriously, I have no objections on new players starting with an expensive instrument. But I gotta say, starting with a Gibson Zakk Wylde is overkill!!!

Heheh chill la bout these people, why lah.. I'm sure u're jealous right? .. A little bit? tongue.gif No offense intended.. But just chill lah.

He has the money, good for him lah.. If u're his good friend u should be happy for him. I'm sure you can even play the guitar when u're over at his place right?

I never never understand this "pawning pawning" shit when it comes to music. Like wtf? Why wanna compare skills? Just enjoy the music man. Have respect.

Of all you know your friend suddenly can shred like ZW in the next 2 years man. At least he got the dough to get a good guitar for starters so later on he won't regret getting crappy gears, like most of us when we just started.

Dude, I started off like that.
I got some chaplang brand Vantage guitar and crappy Laney amp.... and then the other guys were flaunting their Ibanez and Jacksons......
So I slowly start to learn on that crappy guitar, then when the time is right, upgraded to a measly Epiphone LP-100..... and then learned somemore....

Now, over 10 years playing, finally got a decent Epiphone and Jackson......

Don't worry man........ just practice your skills, don't worry about your gear and just continue to dominate. Your time will come. Trust me!

BTW...... of all the persons that SHOULD be jealous of a Gibson Zakk Wylde, it should be me! Just take in the knowledge that a Gibson Zakk Wylde is THE MOST counterfitted Gibson guitar in China. I've seen soooooooooo many imitations, even ones I could swear it's a Gibson until I really looked up at it up close..... you never know!

Me squier california strat here, but the difference is I definitely could afford those high end guitar on my own if I wanted to. Money isn't that much of an issue.

But the thing is, I never think it's the gear that matters, so why waste the money ?

As long as it's good enough, I will learn until I feel I need better gears to bring out the sound I want.

Right now, I don't even know what kind of sound i want to go for, and i don't really care much about the guitar's tone, as long it's good enough to play, I am happy. To me they're all the same, until I learn to appreciate better tone.

I find that it is a good challenge to bring out good playing/sound out of an average/cheap guitar , so I could correct my mistakes and improve and then when I do play with a good gear, I will sound better.

And also in case i break or scratch my guitar so bad, not so sakit hati as all the mistakes I make would not be repeated in the newer/expensive gear.

Dude,

No point being jealous. Some people just happen to pick things up late in their lives but at that point they have the means to buy something which to you might seem expensive but think of it from a newbies point of view. When any newbie opens a book on "How to Learn Blah Blah Blah", one of the main themes would be to buy the best you can afford.

So could it be he's misguided? I picked up the guitar just over a month ago, still struggling but been practicing daily and I have seen some improvements. I've since bought 9. Does that make me arsehole? I tried my hand at DJing sometime last year. I now have 6 turntables. But I've worked hard for all I have and will continue to do so. Just so happens that music came along late in life for me - I didn't have piano lessons at 8 like some people did.

Maybe I'm over-compensating to make up for lost time but I do practice a couple of hours daily and plus, all beginner's books do say "BUY THE BEST YOU CAN AFFORD". Forgive me for trusting them.

Peace bro.

Don't see what's wrong with a noob guitarist getting a 10k guitar...
If he can afford it, by all means do it...

A friend of mine got a highly figured Peavey Wolfgang EVH guitar for his 4 year-old son...
He bought it around A$5.5k, and tried to sell it to me when he kinda "figured" that his son is too young to play a full size electric guitar...
He also bought a Taylor for his 5 year-old daughter to learn guitar on...

He builds ships and his wife runs an oil company... cool2.gif

He's darn good in guitar too, hear all the sounds/ring tone in your old Nokias?
It's all recorded by him...

Ah... This reminds me to visit him... It's been a while... biggrin.gif

wah rossie, ur friend really kaya la. im jealous as i wish i could afford all those. being jealous of them doesnt mean theyre wrong or anything. if im earning big bucks like him, im definitely getting my kids really good instruments to play with. in my opinion, one of the best things MONEY can buy for your kids besides education(hey, education costs a bomb!) is the chance to truly enjoy music by getting them good instruments.

Yeah, I would buy the best for my kids if I can afford it...
Really don't mind at all if he/she eventually gives up...

He also added, he have a few friends in the recording industry and their instruments are like few hundred ks (some vintage violins saxophone etc.), and looking back to his guitars, he feels that he's lucky to be playing guitars biggrin.gif

His most prized possession is a USD30k Hamer... The wood on that thing is just crazy...
He only goes for rare/highly figured wood guitars though...
The guitars are just a very minor thing about his gears; he spent more than RM1m on his home recording studio... thumbup.gif

i've been playing for 12 years... the first 5 i leached off guys who bought guitars but can't play... never had a single guitar until about 7 years...

sometimes it's good to have friends like this... i had one friend who bought a brand new superbike valued at 80k for half the price cause his rich friend got bored of it after riding it for only 8000km... lucky...

The strat looks better.

It has withstood the test of time and the designs are still as modern to me.

I don't like those Gibson LP shapes. Looks too much like an acoustic.

Wait, do they have a special edition dethklok guitar, or are you just talking about a Gibby explorer? but the herman li one is an overkill man.

Added on January 26, 2008, 2:44 am@bman: I'm the exact opposite lol. The strat shape has been copied wayy too many times. I mean, look at ibanez, yamaha, jackson, and all the other superstrat makers. It's just far too common to my liking. I like weird shaped guitars, or rather just anything that doesn't have the strat shape in general.

Oh yeah, now I remembered. I was flipping through a few old issues of Guitar World, and some 14 year old kid also has a Gibson Zakk Wylde, list things that he plays: Blink 182.....

True, there are guitar travesties, but know in comfort that you can outshred him any damn day of the week and that one NO money can buy. tongue.gif

of course la a lil bit jealous...even tho i'm not playing any musical instruments, i do mixed them coz i'm a bedroom dj.
i used only my faithful notebook to mix. well people do have too much money in their lives & spend anything they can without truly taking the potential on it.
i dont really care, i am actually good enough to win up to final session last year, beat those with the correct equipment.

when i do get my alexi 200, i dunno if i'll bring it to the jam sessions cuz it'll be tuned to D and our jam sessions are all tuned to E for convenience sake.. so i'll guess i'll bring my ax biggrin.gif

Oh yeah, if you don't mind ordering online, you should REALLY check out ishibashi. They have Orville by Gibson guitars, which is basically a much better version of Epiphone and almost the same standards as Gibsons themselves.
Cost wise, about the same as Epis..... but quite hard to find here.

No idea to both. Hoping to get it through some people in the forum and would only resort to get it from Bentley last.
