I always wonder why SAF got all those really inconsistent goalkeepers: Roy Carroll (ok lah...but not really good), Tim Howard (also ok only), Ricardo (huh?), Fabien Barthez (shortie that likes to let French compatriots from Arsenal to score...), Andy Goram (huh?), Massimo Taibi (this guys used to have potential but...), Mark Bosnich (a joke man...), Paul Rachubka (err...1 match man?), Nick Culkin (err...1 minute man?), Raimond van der Gouw (pretty good...but overshadowed by Schmeichel)...
And then, came Van der Sar
You should look at what role they were bought for. Carroll was bought as a cover for Barthez, didn't cost the earth. Was an OK GK, nothing more, nothing less, backup material. Ricardo was the same(although I'm not sure how good he is), concede a penalty every game, and saved them every time. That must have count for something. And then, came Van der Sar
Best I've seen is the Big Dane. Others no comment. Yes he makes mistakes, but so do the other 'top' GKs. Look at Cech.
