With free maps for more than 150 countries, and with 15 million points of interest pre-loaded, you can plan your route street by street, city to city.

There are also optional extra features available such as a fully-fledged navigation system. Purchasing the navigation feature releases powerful GPS navigation, with clear, turn-by-turn visual and voice guidance. If your Nokia device doesn't have built-in GPS, you can also use an external GPS module.

Built-in GPS receiver

If your device has an internal GPS receiver (such as Nokia N95), you can use it to pinpoint your current position and to upgrade to full navigation with turn-by-turn voice guidance. Remember, the GPS receiver takes its power from the battery, so using it may drain the battery faster.
External Bluetooth GPS receiver

You can also use Nokia Maps with an external GPS receiver. Bluetooth technology creates a wireless connection between the GPS receiver and your device. To use an external Bluetooth GPS receiver with Nokia Maps:

1. Position GPS receiver for optimum satellite reception.
2. Fully charge your GPS receiver and switch it on.
3. Set up a Bluetooth connection between your device and the GPS receiver.
4. Select the external GPS receiver when the application opens. The GPS connection is then established.

It may take some time to establish the first connection. Subsequent connections are faster, but if you have not used GPS for several days, or are a long way from the last location you used it, it may take some time again to find a strong signal. To speed up the GPS connection, install A-GPS (assisted GPS) with the latest firmware for your device.
Getting a satellite fix

The availability and quality of GPS signals may be affected by your location. Buildings, natural obstacles and weather conditions may influence the signal strength. To ensure the best reception of GPS signals the receiver must be used outdoors.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated by the government of the United States, which is solely responsible for its accuracy and maintenance. Remember, GPS should only be used as a navigation aid. It should not be used for precise location measurement and you should never rely solely on location data from the GPS receiver for positioning or navigation.

Finding a route from A to B has never been easier. With Nokia Maps you can easily plan a route to your destination. Simply indicate your starting point, and your destination, and Nokia Maps will plot your course with easy-to-read directional arrows.

Next, you can choose to travel by car or on foot, the shortest or the fastest route, and you can also choose to allow or avoid motorways, tunnels, ferries, and toll roads. To choose routing settings, select Options > Settings.

Once you have set a starting point and destination, and selected your settings, you can show your route. Each stage of your route, each turn and the distance between them, are listed on the Itinerary tab and you can even choose to view a simulation of the route.
