you need iTunes, an iTunes account, and the ability to purchase with that account. this is for the 5 apps.
however, upgrading to 1.1.3 firmware is free via iTunes. This post has been edited by ihawk98: Jan 16 2008, 05:08 PM |

I'm one of those bizarre people who is against jailbreaking and go for original. Am now downloading the new upgrade. Hopefully they added the ability to view lyrics. *crosses fingers*
Anyone bought the new 5 apps from iTunes yet? |

20U$ for 5 extra apps? Please jailbreak for the love of god. I don't think its justifiable spending RM70 on widgets.

Some people would rather use things the way it's intended. I bet you've burnt RM70 on something more menial, yes?To TS: Maybe we can use iTunes gift cards to purchase the 5 apps. I'll check around and re-confirm. |

QUOTE(cloudeen @ Jan 16 2008, 08:11 PM) 1.1.3 is free upgrade for anyone 1.1.3 is a tempting update for me, cause with all the new features excluding the apps. If the 1.1.3 updates including free apps, I'll be done jailbreaking, revert to stock and update to new firmware happily. My only reason on why I jailbreak is because of the 4 apps, I don't use Stocks.and u only need to pay for the extra apps, lyric/chapter/organize icon is part of the paid upgrade as well, they doesnt come with 1.1.3 |

it's kinda nonsense for charging for the extras, while new iPod Touch that starts shipping today have that new apps for free, preinstalled. This may give an impression that Apple is screwing up early adopters of Touch. but it's up to users to choose. now they got 3 options :
1) Add the features via jailbreak 2) Add via iTunes (owww...USD20 terbang...) 3) Not adding at all mmm...also i think that xtras can't be purchased 'officially' here as the whole procedure is through iTunes. |

Just read from Engadget that you can move icons in the around from the US$20 update. Lyrics too. Trying to look for details of the 1.1.3 update but no luck yet. Anyone who come across any please post it here for the convenience of other readers.
Added on January 17, 2008, 3:42 amBy the way I think the new look to the homepage looks awesome. It clearly distinguishes the icons in the bar from the ones on the main page. Sweetness. I salute Apple for making me fall harder in love with my iPod Touch. Now looking for ways to get the 5 apps the legit way! This post has been edited by zacharoo: Jan 17 2008, 03:42 AM |

Im thinking apple screwed up the early adopters of the iPod touch, making us pay the USD20 for all these apps that will come free with the new version of it.
But heck, I would upgrade in a heartbeat if we can do it easily here |

Are you sure about that? I've upgraded mine to 1.1.3 but I don't seem to see any way of viewing lyrics? Can somebody share how to do this? Engadget reported that this feature is only available in the US$20 plus the 5 apps. Puzzling. |

why not $5 only? 1 app for 1 bucks, hehehe...
mmm...why doesnt apple just include them in the firmware? maybe they thought that the extras deserved a price. strange, this is not like an OS upgrade where we stuck with an earlier version, and the new same device got all the new features preinstalled, while we have to pay for opting for the extras. huhu... thing is though, the GPS won't come to Msia for a while.
and what happens when someone shifts their router/hotspot. you'll get really bad directions then. This post has been edited by jinXxxx: Jan 18 2008, 04:56 AM |

Maybe they map hotspots which are permanent, such as wifi from certain providers like TM, P1, Jaring or Time. They will not blindly record location data of personal wifi routers. Like they're doing now in US, they're partnering with Skyhook Wireless for record of the mapping data.
The downside of this Touch 'GPS' is it is not tracking via the triangulation of cellular tower. |

Yes. True that. But then the GPS would be quite pointless when you move out of the City limits when there's no hotspots available.
It doesn't a cellular phone radio built-in. If it had it'd been called the i-Phone. haha... |

in Mail app can already view PDF (Mail is available with the 20 bucks software update pack, or through jailbreak). But it is limited to the Mail environment. There's a 3rd party software called PDF Viewer that make use the PDF viewing capability into a software, which is an app in iPod Touch.
Yes, needs to jailbreak. But the catch is that there's still no jailbreak method available for the 1.1.3. So to view the PDF natively you need a jailbreak version of Mail, not the official one which is only supported on 1.1.3 platform. |

You mean sort of like an add-on to the Touch, or a standalone item?
Either way, it's not a biggie. It's an iPod and I'm supposed to play music on it. Having a GPS is an extra but not something that I'd miss. |

I believe that the ways of creating iTunes account and adding the store amount has been explained many times but the latest i've seen is on the iPod Touch thread. so that's gonna be straight.
Ok, 1st make sure that you've updated the firmware to 1.1.3. After you've your account with the iTunes Store amount, open the iTunes Store and click on "iPod Touch : January Software Update". The procedure then is straightforward. It will download another update to the firmware (the .ipa file i guess) and then it is installed to your iPod Touch. |

Actually it is really easy and straightforward as the upgrade is made around the interface of iTunes Music Store. It is almost like doing the firmware update. The only difference is you need to pay, in which it will prompt for your iTunes password just like when you are doing any purchase of song. If you find the firmware upgrade (if you had done before) is straightforward, this also almost the same. But remember to connect first your iPod Touch before clicking the "January Software Update" icon. And then it will bring you to the download page. And at the page it tells you the details of the 5 applications plus other functions such as the icon rearrangement.
I know maybe you need more convincing explanation as money is involved here. But if you doubt it, just go to apple.com and click Support. But I heard that some apple reseller here now bring in USD25 iTunes card for helping of this purpose. Maybe if they're kind enough you can ask them how to do it. Yeah they should be kind as they jack up the price of the cards here. Added on January 20, 2008, 1:35 pmBut if you're a beginner of the iTunes Store, it will be easier if you familiarise 1st with the iTunes Store interface. Just create a free iTunes account by using the free music coupon code guide that's mentioned around this AppleByte forum. And then just browse around the music store. I know you'll get addicted by the free pilot episodes of TV Shows or maybe free musics featured. As you getting accustomed to it, you'll eventually know that everything's from Apple is kinda straightforward. Sorry off topic. But I think this is great as an exposure for people that want to upgrade their January Software Update. This post has been edited by LaskarCinta: Jan 20 2008, 01:35 PM |

QUOTE(zacharoo @ Jan 21 2008, 01:21 AM) I've read this on the iPod Touch thread:QUOTE(cRazYee @ Jan 18 2008, 11:05 PM) well for these solution, our CG computers have a way to fullfill your desired Maybe this should help. But yeah, the price is steep. But it's more convenient if you'd like to ask the procedures from them, alongside with your purchase of iTunes Store card. But if you want a cheaper solution, there's a thread around that sells the iTunes credit. Yeah way more cheaper. Or maybe you can get the iTunes credit from eBay. There are so many options. We are clearing all our existing iPod touch at a discounted price. Effective from 18th of Jan 2008 onwards. We have around 50 units left. While stock last only. MA623ZP/A iPod touch 8G - RM1,099 MA627ZP/A iPod touch 16G - RM1,499 We will be selling iTune card of USD25 @RM119 in our outlets starting from Monday (Sogo - Wed, Spring - Friday). We bring in the iTune card so that our iPod touch customer can purchase the software updater from the iTune store. So let's say ipod touch 8G RM1099 + itunes card RM 119 = still cheaper abit |

But remember to connect first your iPod Touch before clicking the "January Software Update" icon. And then it will bring you to the download page. And at the page it tells you the details of the 5 applications plus other functions such as the icon rearrangement. cool... thax a lot for the explanation...I know maybe you need more convincing explanation as money is involved here. But I think this is great as an exposure for people that want to upgrade their January Software Update. will get the card and try it out in these few days time... hope got ppl starts selling it... u r the best |

i have both uk debit and credit cards. there is an itunes uk store. i might be able to help though at a small fraction of profit
uk's ipod touch january software upgrade retails at £12.99 and the next closest available itunes gift card denominator is £15. |

I just got the January upgrade today and was happy with it. However, as I was reading up on jailbreaking and thought that my upgrade wasn't that worth it anymore. I used to think that jailbreaking would void my iPod's warranty but apparently restoring the iPod using iTunes would return it to its original condition with no obvious sign of having been jailbroken. I thought I would feel better doing things the legal way but now I'm quite bummed.
P.S. It looks like it's cheaper to buy the upgrade on the US iTunes store than the UK one. I have a US iTunes store account and can help with buying gift cards too! It's also cheaper than buying the gift card from an Apple authorized reseller in Malaysia. Let me know! |

How much did you bought for yourself? P.S. It looks like it's cheaper to buy the upgrade on the US iTunes store than the UK one. Btw, remember the SDK will be release to developers in Feb? 1.1.3 is the firmware that is ready to load/install all the softwares/applications, 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 will be unable to do so. Those who runs 1.1.3 on their iPod Touch or iPhone can load their apps pretty fast than before too cause all the apps aren't stored in Root folder but instead Mobile folder, so I guess it's pretty fast to load apps without missing things behind. I thought I'd just give it a try. Guess I couldn't wait till the release of the SDK in February and till someone makes the applications I want to use. I'm finding the Mail application really useful.
I paid for my January software upgrade in USD using my US iTunes Store account, not using the gift card. So it's the published price, USD19.9~MYR66. Now that you asked me to state the price in MYR, it's not as bad. |

Here is why Apple charges 20$ for upgrade: http://www.macrumors.com/2008/01/23/skyhoo...one-ipod-touch/
USAToday profiles Skyhook Wireless who helps provide some of the technology behind Apple's new GPS-like location features in the iPhone and iPod Touch's Google Maps application. Skyhook Wireless was formed in 2003 and uses a database of Wi-Fi hotspots to determine your geographic location. The process is explained: "Every Wi-Fi access point, whether public or private, sends out a signal every second or so, like a lighthouse. We pick up those signals and use our technology to calculate your exact location." While Wi-Fi hotspots are detected based on these signals, no direct connection is made to them. To seed the system with data, Skyhook sent teams of drives around the US and Canada to map out hotspots. They say they have 70% of North America covered, and are currently adding Europe and Asia. Unlike GPS, Skyhook's system works better indoors and in urban settings. Of interest, Skyhook generally receives a payment per device sold with the technology, and this fee may be built into the fee Apple is charging for the iPod touch software update. For the iPhone, Apple starts with Skyhook's Wifi database first, and if unable to find a hotspot, it then falls back to using less-precise cellular tower information provided by Google. A company called Navizon had provided very similar technology for iPhone users as an unofficial 3rd party application. This post has been edited by Voxe: Jan 23 2008, 11:37 PM |

It's your choice. Some people think it's alright since they use these few apps alot.
On the other hand, some people might not spend as much on speakers... (Nice audio setup!) |

QUOTE(j3rry @ Jan 24 2008, 12:01 PM) personally, i have the 16GB and love it to death.as for your 2nd question, in its native form (straight out of the box), it cannot handle any attachments. once it is jailbroken, there is a PDF viewer app that can be installed. But i don't think it can handle MS office docs (anyone can confirm this?). for more detailed information about unleashing the power of the ipod Touch, please check the sticky thread in this sub-forum. If you face a dilemma deciding whether to be "bad" or "clean"...then you would rather be "clean"...like me...RM66 is not that bad after all right??? Yea it was tempting...I didn't want to buy it at first...After I got the firmware upgrade, my iTunes store was redirected to the January software upgrade purchase page...the pictures and description looked so tempting I just clicked the buy button
I just hope Apple won't make me have to pay again in the future...I don't think I can stand the...uhm...extortion |
