Sorry if this had been asked many times...

Anyone here tried using Skype on PSP before? It seems that there is a firmware update on the PSP that have Skype installed here :

http://www.gamespot.com/features/6185924/i...topslot;title;1

Which version of firmware is that and does this only works on the Slim? Anyone tried this on the Fat before?

I'm interested in a PSP but completed know nothing about it. I've gone tru the FAQ at post #1 and would like to ask few questions.

#1
What is the difference purchasing from console shops instead of purchasing from Sony Style Malaysia?
Have it this way, purchasing from Sony Style will allow your PSP to be warrantied directly from Sony themselves. It will confirm that you are getting all original stuff but at a much higher price and lesser package as compared to the other sellers. Therefore, in the opposite, you will be getting a far better package at a cheaper price if you are getting from sellers outsite. However, there is no warranty on the PSP by Sony and you are at risk of getting fake accesories. smile.gif

#2
What is a modded PSP that console shops sells? Why are they not warrantied? What is the purpose of a modded PSP?
Its actually installed with Custom Firmwares (CFW). By having a CFW, you will be able to play homebrew games as well as games directly from the Memory Stick by itself. The reason for not warrantied by Sony - they are modded smile.gif Some (or should i say, many) actually uses the CFW to play downloaded games etc and does not buy the UMD sold by Sony themselves. Now, you can do the math on why Sony does not want to warranty them tongue.gif

#3
What does region do/mean?
Well, basically there are different regions depending on where the PSP was launched and to be sold at. And that being said, there are actually games/movies that are region dependant and would not work with different region from the UMD themselves. To learn more, look at greyfox's post above.

#4
PSP got wifi. How do i type alphabets when i surf the net?
There is actually a virtual keyboard (or should i say, alphabet sellector) in the PSP itself. Kinda hard to use at first but you will get used to it in the end. Eg:

#5
When i build my PC i have basic knowledge about PC and how to troubleshoot. Do i need some basic knowledge how to handle a PSP to own one? Like is there command or scripts that i need to mess with if my only intention with the PSP is to play games and maybe surf the net?
No. You do not need to mess around with the PSP. Just use it like a console will do unless you are really into customizing the PSP itself.

#6
Where do most LYN surfer buy their UMD games from? The games selection seems limited.
There is plenty of PSP/UMD seller even here at LYN. Try look around in the Console/Garage Sales section. There is one alternative that provides a lot of UMD Choices - PlayAsia.com. They do offer shipping to Malaysia smile.gif

#7
Is there instant messenger(IM) for PSP?
As off what i know, SKYPE is official at the latest firmware. But i only tried online web messenger before using the PSP tongue.gif

#8
Will there be a new PSP soon? Do YOU GUYS recommend me to purchase the PSP without having a game desired? Till now I only play computer fps games so no favourites
New PSP? Only Sony knows. But there is no sign of it coming anytime too soon. I bought the PSP without any desirable games but to be honest, i never regret. The great variety of game choices, the number of additional functions and portability is what makes the PSP something kinda hard to resist.

Thanks.

Hope this helps.. smile.gif

@bill3 like Lakum said i think you got free region umd movies .A lot people over the net/forum find it's not working

Wow...700MB for 2mins? Same case here for my 4GB memory. Damn, something with 700MB would take me, roughly about 10 - 12 mins to finish transferring doh.gif via USB cable.

Switch your region to Europe. Then it will be listed under Internet Menu smile.gif

Anyway, saw somewhere that the new 4.00 firmware is going to support RMVB, DivX files for video. Thats going to be nice. Flash Player 9.0 as well. ANy confirmation on that?

haha.. i only own a psp. no nds.

but i thought the camera quality is great?. have you seen the actual shots of the camera?. the 1.3Mpix is true u know. not like a regular camera or cameraphone's camera that enlarges the image to 3mpix, 4mpix etc etc.
try looking up for some shots of the camera. sucky night mode though. too much noise.
*
Yes, i have personally tested the ChottoShot and the quality amaze me for a 1.3MP camera. Very good indeed for a 1.3MP camera. smile.gif

I`m gonna get myself a PSP , shud i go for PSP 1000 or PSP 2000 ? Thanks
*
No point going for PSP1000 anymore. Doubt you can find new one in the market anyway. Go for the PSP2000 or if you can wait and willing to wait for Custom Firmware, go for the PSP3000.

PSP3000 not even officially launched in Malaysia yet, so fast PSP2000 running low on stocks?
*
LOL..There is always a way to bring them in even without officially launching it here. Heck, when the PSP2000 was out, PSP1000 is low in stock as well and thus, the same circle of price going up etc.

But allen, if you look at it this way.

PSP 3000. RM750, correct? After you completed the game, eventually you'll go and get one, which costs around.... say... 80 bucks? Adds up, costs around 830.

It may still look cheap, but somehow, the PSP 2000 still worths it. For one, you can play ahem games, costs around RM5 only.

And you might wanna shop around, go to Bernard's place. I got mine 840, 4GB high Speed (Filled with games, themes, etc etc) and it comes with 2DVDs that holds around 18-20 games.
*
Well, it still depends on how you look at stuff. I bought my first PSP1000 when the PSP2000 was originally announced. At that point, the price for PSP1000 is at a high as there is rumours saying how the PSP2000 cannot be hacked and must use UMD in order to play. So, i spent more instead of waiting for the new PSP for the reason as said by you, expensive UMD etc.

However, just barely 1 month after i grab the PSP1000, a CFW was officially announced for PSP2000 and the price started to drop way cheaper than the price i bought the PSP1000. In the end, i got myself another PSP2000 as well.

So in this case, my personal advice is to wait for the CFW to be announced for the PSP3000 (if you can wait for it) and if you feel the PSP3000 is a better device than the PSP2000. Else, then there is no choice but to pick up the PSP2000 now at a jacked up price.

how much would upgrade cost?
*
You mean firmware? It varries. Might cost RM10 - RM30 depending on places or sometimes, you can get upgrade for free tongue.gif

Ehhh but now if you look at the 3000 model, in my opinion, the interlacing issue, you know, the scan lines, it makes me appreciate my 2000 even more.
*
Well, thats one issue that needed to be considered. As in its a long term issue or can be solved in the later batches of PSP3000. Still, its still not worthy to purchase the PSP2000 at this point due to the price.
