Yeah i've to put one in the toilet at night since i got nowhere else to put them.

anyways this is the killer news i got this morning. I rang up the local vet and enquiry about neutering charges...guess what?

The doctor says its only a 60/40 chance of survival bcause of the anaestesia ?!!? 60/40 ?! 60%?! thats almost a flip of a coin chance!!

If anyone here knows another vet in Penang who does rabbits please share it.

NOTE: however the kind doctor did mentioned that he will look up the subject for me and ask me to call him on monday.  unsure.gif
*
neutering is a rather simple and safe surgery. 60/40 chance of survival is too low shocking.gif maybe you can call up a few other vets, talk to them and then decide which one you're more comfortable with

this link has a good guide on questions to ask your vet before engaging him for the surgery http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/spay-neuter.html

and how are you going to make sure that the kits are securely in one spot and kept warm if they are left in the open without a nest box?

Yippee!! Finally found a vet in Penang thats confident enough to neuter rabbits. Will be taking Pebbles and BamBam for check up tomoro.

On another topic, i wonder how rabbits would react to the sound of firecrackers? CNY is coming and there will be nonstop firecrackers here. I'm staying at a low cost flat and u know how loud and frequent some of these explosion can be in places like this. Thinking might have to move them somewhere for the time being. How do u guys/girls handle occasions like this?
*
thats good news! let us know how they both do after their op smile.gif which vet is this, by the way?

is there a more quiet area that you could move their cages to? mine find security in their cardboard box or under the couch. they'll stay in there until the disturbance is over. generally they feel more secure if they are not in the 'open' so maybe when it gets too noisy, you could drape some thick towels over their cages to create a more enclosed surrounding (of course, they must be able to breathe in there too tongue.gif ) nose rubs & pats also help to calm them down

well, her condition is quite stable as for now.
occasionally she does attack me.
i'm not sure if she is getting into the breeding season but they are just 3 months old.
i'm still waiting for them to get a bit mature before having them neuter and spayed.
have any of you experience early mature?

if i got time, will post more pic tomorrow if they post nicely.
*
My female rabbit was aggressive by the time she was 3 months plus. She wasn't aggressive to us humans, but she was very aggressive to a male rabbit which i got to be her companion. They have since been spayed and neutered, and now live together in peace smile.gif

how old are they when you spay and neuter them?
i heard that they must be at least 6 months old.

bambi like to stick with me as when she is with me, sissy won't go lape her.
i will push sissy away and sissy don like me go near him.
but when i touch bambi, she will make the growling sound and occasionally attack me.
*
males can be neutered once their testicles descend, but i suggest you wait until at least 5mths old. Females can be spayed after 6mths old. In my case, my male was neutered at 6mths, female spayed at 7mths.

Sissy is male? Male rabbits can be fertile from as early as 3mths, so you may need to separate your rabbits according to their gender to avoid accidental pregnancies.

yeah, sissy is a male. bambi and snowie are female.
wah, separate ka? then i need to buy a full whole set including cage again.
i thought of going to vet and ask them can spay or not.
hahaha.
*
yup, thats how it works with rabbits... you gotta be prepared to keep them separate unless you want your house to be flooded with babies haha instead of buying cages, maybe for now u can keep them in separate rooms/areas in your house?

even if you neuter the male now, you will still have to keep them separate because the sperm in the male can live up to 1mth after neuter. that means even after the operation, he will be able to mate with an intact female and get her pregnant. another reason to separate them after their operation is so that they don't hurt each other while they are recovering. you need to give them about 1mth for their hormones to die down & for the aggression to subside.

i think it is too soon for you to spay the females. although in US, they sometimes spay rabbits as young as 3mths, i still prefer to wait until at least 6mths. i believe the rabbit needs the hormones released from its reproductive organs to grow and mature. and also i dont like the idea of a rabbit being put under anesthesia when it is still so young. just my thoughts smile.gif

so..roughly your rabbit should be close to 1 year old by now, since you've had him/her for 9mths already? is that a recent picture of your rabbit? looks pretty young there smile.gif your rabbit has Harlequin markings, a Japanese to be more precise (orange and black bands).

who your rabbit ends up living with should depend on who can take better care of it. will your family be able to do so? if they can, then maybe its better to bring your rabbit back to your hometown, at least you will still be able to see him/her when you go back to your hometown for holidays.

pancho, why don't you try contacting beh_yo_rabbitry.. not sure if he ships his oxbow products, but u can check with him on that. or you can try checking with JTL.

what do u mean by show u some suggestion pellet? you mean suggest some good pellet brands? right now, personally, Oxbow is the best brand available in the market because of the nutritional contents and the quality of the materials used to make the pellets. if there is no hay available in taiping, i doubt you'll be able to make your own pellets. hay is an important ingredient in pellets.

yea its true what kembara said. Also, Piggy is new to grass to he will come back to you since he is still not confident in the new surroundings. Once he gets use to it, he may be running all over having fun. You can also use a harness to hold on to him smile.gif

yup, its called binkies! my rabbits used to do that when they were young, but now they're older, and bigger.. they still binky but not as much as before.. maybe they're too heavy tongue.gif

djspinnet, have you ever experienced any parasite (mites, etc) problems after letting your rabbits play around in the garden?

I can and will definitely ensure a clean environment in my home.. but as for parks, etc.. its beyond my control what parasites other animals may leave behind lol! that's why my rabbits have been apartment-rabbits all these while. i'd love to let them play in grass though, i think they'd love it smile.gif

towns like ipoh/taiping do not have good rabbit products. Get in touch with the pet stores there. Research more on your own and educate the pet stores. So that you can do justice for the rabbit community there.
*
I think by now, a few of the forum members have suggested names of people you can contact who are willing to ship good quality pellets & hay throughout Malaysia. So its no longer an excuse to say that such things are not available in your hometown. Again, these are the people to contact to ship pellets & hay: beh_yo_rabbitry, JTL (or visit Petshack's website to order http://www.petshack.com.my), Chinchillas (hay only). Please try and learn more about the proper diet for rabbits if you want to keep them as pets. Spend a bit more to buy quality food for your rabbits.. if you take proper care of it, your rabbit will be your companion for the next 10 years or more.

ThankQ all..
I will do my best for the rabbit...
I think i need to by new HL to keep my left HL accmpny..
My left HL look very poor and not active and really comot.
I really dont want her to die...

When i ask the vet what coz of the diarrhea, the vet said maybe bcos the pellet is very keras..the old vet suggest me to giv them carrot and stop giv them pallet..  Apedaaa..i think vet in taiping pon has low knwledge about bunny la..
*
take good care of your HL first before you rush out to buy another rabbit. not active and comot? doesn't sound good to me, you better put all your energy into taking care of this rabbit. learn as much as you can about rabbits first before you get another one.
