Guys, thanks for keeping the hobby alive. You'd kept me entertained through many a youtube video. Many thanks esp to Mindstorm for starting this topic and seeding the interest.

A couple of questions for all bros:
1. Have you have you ever caught and try to fight other kinds of
FSs? i.e. other than Thania Bhamoensis (TB)? I remember as kids, we avoid
the other kinds of FS due to superstition of "ghost spiders". Perhaps they can fight and will also fight against TBs?

2. chopsters seems to be in disfavor from the recent posts. Due to general lack of longevity? Maybe we can have a more scientific survey of chops vs non-chops health/longevity? As a kid, I preferred chopsters as it's aggressive and cool, but go-stun paos seems to be stronger? Any basis to that?

Ken25 and viper88, thanks for the replies.

Yes, I'm from S'pore.

Viper88, after your reply about Spider Besi (Mangrove Jumper ((Ligurra Latidens), I searched your old post on the topic,
and they seemed fearsome. I think we should stick to TB esp. for their fighting styles smile.gif Besi is just chop and eat?
How about Besi vs Kuning, who'll win (needs to be pound for pound)?

BTW there's a lame youtube by a filipino kid fighting 2 different species of spiders, but there's no actual fighting as the spiders are just walking over each other. Strange as spiders are carnivorous and should eat what it can handle.

That'll be nice but hard this year; ... I'm only in SG around June; rest of the year, I'm in the states,
so I'm living my FS hobby vicariously in this forum/youtubes.

I remembered as a kid seeing a bunch (>10 s-m size) of FSs streaming out of a banana trunk.. surprised the hack out of me since I don't expect to see more than 1 at the same place. Also we had this superstition about banana plants so I didn't try to catch any. Perhaps they're a different species (they seemed darker/blacker, but similar size) or maybe spiderlings? Perhaps Mindstorm/viper/mangrovejumper or other spider experts can confirm? Maybe these are the brother paos?

QUOTE(ksiao @ Jul 20 2009, 01:15 AM)

haha ok guys i was taking a walk walk today morning along a big drain with low water lvl near my place,
then saw a fighting fish so i when down to catch it out,
then walk in the drain for like 20mins got nothin,
i'm not sure if its wild or someone let him  off there,
here are the picz of the fish which i name fire,
Bro ksiao, the fish you caught was somebody's released pet, of the betta splendens variety.
Wild ones are drabbier and don't spot the long finage.

The father of my primary school-mate
was a professional fighting fish trainer, but those ff were of the thai/M'sian kind with big heads, short fins, with teeth and tough scales. I don't think this profession exists anymore. Just to recount old days,
these are what I remembered:
1. he trains the ff for stamina by letting it swim against current in a tub
2. adds some chili to the water to 'toughen' the scales (not sure for how long)
3. toughen their skin with tannic acid (placing some old leaves in the water)
4. finger spars with them

Actual fights are interesting. There was a fish-stall near Selegie school where they stage their
fights. Contestants were dropped into a big glass bottle which was then covered up (to cut off oxygen for shorter fights?). The fights are brutal as these fishes all have teeth (your fire would have been
eaten up) and ends often with death as they have indomitable will (your fire would probably chabout
way before that). After a fight, bettors collect their money, along with the winning owner.
The fishes (winner and loser, if not dead) are discarded.... this was how I built my collection smile.gif

BTW, what happened to the once SG spider king, Yuda? Has he come back with his HK/TW kimpao?

fsnow55:
I don't know anything about your observation of multiple spiders on the banana tree.  Perhaps it was a whole group of slings coming out of a nest if it was agitated.  It's certainly not normal behaviour for adult jumping spiders.

Depending on where you are, you can probably pick up a Phiddipus sp. or two.  I know Mindstorm is dying to see them face off.  I couldn't find any in my region (Seattle area) so they are probably not indigenious to the northwest.
*
Mangrovejumper, I saw them as a kid in Singapore; you're right, probably spiderlings.
I once swatted a huge spider (brown?) and got the shock of my life when hundreds of slings exploded out. She was
ferrying them on her back.
I checked out Phidippus on the web; seems to be common in America; hopefully none are poisonous, so I'll
try to look for them in the garden. So far, only see the common house spider. Also found this excellent resource on Am. spiders:

Hey guys, took half day leave to comb the spot at Kallang Way with Vincent. After a tired search, we managed to find Hulk back!! Was quite surprised we are able to find him back cause that place is quite big. He was hiding on a big leaf with a dry leaf on top of it. Caught a fs to spar with him and confirmed it's him.

So this sunday's match will be Transformer : Revenge of the fallen  tongue.gif

Wow! this is great news! Initially, I was thinking it's like finding a needle in a haystack. I guess
not, perhaps the FS hunting range is quite small? Or maybe their population is not that high (we
need to start thinking of conservation i.e. let the ice-cream go; let kings that had won retire after
X championship matches so we have the next generation of strong fighers etc.

Anyway, make sure to post videos of the fight.

Added on July 29, 2009, 2:55 amI always have some crazy ideas. One of them i have all along but never get around to do is to preserve the passed- away kings in a glamourous way. Sort of put them in a fighting stance and preserve them in a clear resin like how they make insect jewellery. In that way, you will always be able to eyeball compare sizes of kings from different generations.

MS, this is not too crazy ... it's an excellent idea esp. to remember the past away kings or notables. I wonder if its easy to find the matls in SG/MSIA though. Anyway, my uncle used to preserve his dead fishes this way (or similar)e.g. a big gold fish (Ryukin) . BTW, I'd seen a M'sian pasar malam selling similar big scorpions and other insects preserved in the resin.

QUOTE(mindstorm @ Jul 28 2009, 01:07 PM)
this must be the weirdness story i have heard about fs. I would understand if they are slings. But s-m size? 10? walau.

Personally, i don't have any impression of catching 2 males one nest. Maybe i did, but i don't remember it at all. It must be a big nest if that is the case. I doubt fs understand wat is brotherhood about. I have been rearing slings on and off recently and i can tell u this. After a few days after hatching, the slings would separate and should they meet, they will square off! With stance and all. And not uncommonly, one of them can even launch a chop!(You can try that yourselves, catch some similar slings and fight them!) They are born to fight!

But i wouldn't deny the possibility that some offsprings may somehow acquire tolerence shld they be "forced"(for lack of better choice) to grow inside the same nest. Just like fighting fish. I have seen my friend reared about 30-40 adult males fighters in one large tank since they are fries. Now and then a couple may flare up but otherwise they seems like females in a tank. So it is possible that may be the case with "brother" fs.

The brother fs i talked about very early in this forum(bro1 and bro2) were not caught in same nest. They were caught while still in the stage before the last moult(black face) and because they both moulted exactly the SAME night, i ASSUME they are brothers. Also because they were nearly same size and pattern and caught in nest that were quite closeby. Now come to think of it, it must be terribly coincidental that 2 brother fs can moult exactly the same time for ALL the number of moults until the last one.  rclxub.gif

I found that slings can moult exactly the same day for the first moult but got also a few days apart. But overall this shows that the cycle can be fairly predictable, means the cycle fall within a small range of deviation, provided they are not starved or diseased i suppose.

MS, check the pic in this jumping spider form (different species):
http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showthread...t=146551&page=6
There are other similar pics in other threads in this forum showing different spiders together (but most of them, if not all, are slings).

I remembered the ones I saw as not tiny slings. One explanation might be they're not TBs but maybe a close/related species. Sort of like some sister species of fighting fishes (Betta Splendens) that can however tolerate each other e.g Betta Cocina (sp?), etc.

I noticed a lot of the fights on leaves:
1. end up on the other side
2. does not leave FSs without room to fight

results in blurred video or shaky video. Is it possible to stage them
in a fixed platform e.g. foolscap pad on top of something etc?
I think MS or one of our Msian bros commented on this before.
