Shigofumi primarily centers around a young-looking girl named Fumika who works as a mail carrier to deliver "after death letters" (死後文, shigofumi). These letters are written by people after they die and are delivered to the person the letter is addressed to in the living world. The letters contain things that the now-deceased could not say while they were alive, such as things they wanted to say before they died, or even to inform others about who killed them in the case of a murder. Accompanying Fumika is her talking staff Kanaka which can also float of its own accord and likes to be treated as if "she" were a human. In contrast to Fumika who is quiet and serious about her job, Kanaka is loud and boisterous. The story follows Fumika and Kanaka as they interact with the living via the shigofumi.

Light novels

Shigofumi was first released as a series of light novels written by Ryo Amamiya, and drawn by Poko. Despite the novels being produced first, the anime series is considered by Tomoro Yuzawa as the original work. The novels are published by MediaWorks under their Dengeki Bunko shōnen label. The first novel was released on October 10, 2006, and as of November 10, 2007, three volumes have been published. The fourth, and final, volume will be published on March 10, 2008. The story from the novels differs somewhat from that of the anime.

i tot that this show wouldn't be very good. But after episode 01, it changed my mind. Sending letters from the departed doesn't really sound very exciting, but there's a big twist towards the end of the ep and it's really... WTF?! Very emo show, lol

Wow didn't actually think the show would be interesting. Read the premise, so yea the idea is cool but it isn't really any special... postman delivering letters from the dead, yea so what...

But after watching episode 1, I think the show could have some potential. Best show I've tried this season, although I've only seen 4 lol.

Some clarification, Fumika in anime and novel are different, the Fumika in anime afraid of cat while the other one is insect. And the one in novel loves to play shogi, though she plays on only intuition alone. The talking staff in novel called Mayama instead of Kanaka and has a young boy's voice but not nyoron.

finished this in a marathon until morning (as you can see the timestamp of my post: 7:46 AM)

not too bad, would be nicer if its a *BIT* longer on the fumika storyline.


overall it did end in a good way, nothing left hanging or anything of that sort. and even did a nice "recap" of all the previous characters
it'll be a 8-9ish outta 10 for sure. my only complaint would be the 12 ep length. of course, it may ruin the series should it be longer, but for something this good, one could only be greedy and want more
