Hello. I just upgraded my PSU and my graphic card. Now my computer can play Gears of War and Crysis in High graphics under 1280 x 1024. But I still experiencing occassional stuttering when I play the game.
I know it is my Pentium 4 is bottlenecking my graphic card.
My question is, will my performance improve if I buy another 1GB of RAM?
And my motherboard only support 400 and 533MHz DDR2 RAM, will they work if I buy faster speed RAM? (of course they will be limited at 533MHz)
Do I have to buy RAM in pairs?

since ur motherboard can only supply to DDR2 533, if u slot in a 667, the speed will be limited to 533 only, but there's no harm, just running slower from the default RAM speed....

But who wants to buy my old 512MB RAM?
And can I just buy one stick of 1GB RAM? Will it work if I slot 3 sticks of RAM as oppose of 2 or 4? Must they work in pairs?

u can either slot them in pair or just use single also nvm, u can keep ur 512mb in case ur new RAM failed u. if u didnt slot the new RAM in pair, it just cant run in dual-channel mode, in which u'll experience some slow-down in term of speed, but there's not much different with single-channel, maybe a 5% improvement

Also about SATA drive, how do I know whether my SATA is 1.0 or 2.0? Does 2.0 harddisk works with 1.0?

QUOTE(yaphong @ Jan 6 2008, 01:17 PM) Also about SATA drive, how do I know whether my SATA is 1.0 or 2.0? Does 2.0 harddisk works with 1.0? yes...as long as it is SATA, then their performance should be on par with each other, unless u compare them with raptor

Getting Started

Stuterring not lag? Yes, adding an additional gig of RAM will remove any stuttering. One definitive way to determine whether you have enough RAM or not is to run Crysis with high textures, then if youre experiencing any stuttering, lower it to medium. If the stuttering reduces or dissapears on medium, then its time to upgrade your RAM.
hope this helps -Shaun-
Added on January 6, 2008, 10:25 pmand yes, it is advisable to install RAM in pairs as they will run in dual-channel mode, which improves performance.

I am not sure, like in Gears of War, when I entered a new area, it will lag but once I waited it to load that area for 1 minute, it will be smooth.
I guess my 8800GT should be able to handle the graphics. Not sure about my Pentium 4 though.
I thought about upgrading my RAM because when I play Crysis, my page file usage is more than 1.3GB...
Added on January 8, 2008, 12:02 amI was reading the RAM thread and it says that we can use Dual Channel with 3 sticks of RAM?
If I buy a 1GB of RAM running with 2 512MB RAM, will it work?
