I don't think thieves do much good things around here. The only way is to make regular backups of your phone/laptop.
For Mac, use SuperDuper to make an exact clone of your HDD For phones, I just sync the contacts I have to my Mac. Probably they made it that way so that MB/MBP users won't be the idiot with the blazing loud songs in Starbucks. Earphone ftw?
