Thieves can detect laptops in cars using "scanners" of some sort.

Is that true or just a myth?

I don't think thieves do much good things around here. The only way is to make regular backups of your phone/laptop.

For Mac, use SuperDuper to make an exact clone of your HDD
For phones, I just sync the contacts I have to my Mac.

As for the recovering your Macs, there is this service online which keeps track on your Mac if ever if goes missing.

Probably they made it that way so that MB/MBP users won't be the idiot with the blazing loud songs in Starbucks. Earphone ftw?
