I'm not sure whether this is a thread belongs to this section but having a query on 2 popular handheld gaming devices, I couldn't be wrong...

I haven't have a good MP3 player for quite sometime and have to deal with crappy compression to stuff as much song as possible into my 256MB player...seriously sucks.

Considering the price, it seems like these Nintendo DS Lite and PSP Slim Lite also comes with MP3 playback as well as what they are meant for, GAMING !!!

Eventhough I'm not into handheld or console gaming, having this feature would be nice... I can't lug around a laptop for gaming while on the run laugh.gif

I'm pretty sure both got their pros and cons, but PSP is top of the list due to the memory storage is Memory Stick where I can still get from major shops and games are widely available, the MP3 playback is software based in comparison with the Nintendo DS Lite which requires for the additional MP3 player cartridges and SD card for storage. More modular but more money as well.

Somehow the Nintendo DS got touchscreen (not that important, but an adv compare to PSP).

I haven't tested the Nintendo but I have definitely have a hands-on on the PSP (old version), the graphic is superb but ain't sure the Slim Lite version now would be better. I find that their RRP at RM799 is quite reasonable and I believe some store might be selling it at a lower price and comes with freebies.

But my primary concern is still MP3 playback; have any owner of the PSP Lite uses it as an MP3 player while on the run? How portable-friendly it goes? Would it be more advisable to get a dedicated MP3 player instead of PSP/Nintendo if gaming is not my aim?

Please advise notworthy.gif

My primary MP3 player of choice is the Sansa View.

honestly. try getting a psp.. the memory storage of 4gb on mspd is quiet common these days. and u get tat size on the new nano.. so no biggy... wat more online and games and wide screen for video viewing. however u would give up sound quality as its not a dedicated mp3 player.. not very noticeable unless u can tell the diff betweem 192 and 256.. the DS. well.. jus look at the library of games and see which games suit u best..

but u can never go wrong wit a psp. nuff said.

PSP gets my vote. it was why I got it last time, it has the ability to fulfill your portable needs.. video, music, gaming AND wifi all in one machine.. how convenient is that?

hard to decide cus u prefer mp3 over games...
have u heard iriver clix generation2?. thats the best choice for mp3/mp4 player...
http://www.iriver.com/product/p_detail.asp?pidx=82

psp is better for gaming not for mp3... the sound is horrible even u use high quality earpieces (if compare to other normal mp3 player like creative)...

I have both ipod video and PSP. PSP is too bulky as a mp3 player, but it has the advantage of supporting remote earphone compare to the 5th gen ipod. If you are solely looking into mp3, i ll recommend ipod, as the dimension, storage size, podcast and others.

If you are looking for a device which support wifi gaming, psp suits your choice, but is really a pain for me to do typing in PSP.

Hmm... now I'm really thorn apart besides wallet thorn (koyak)...

Is the PSP MP3 quality that bad even with good earphone? Have to test it out at Sony Wings...

I know about iRiver and they are if not the best, the second best in the world for making MP3 player; others using the standard MP3 decoder by realtek, they opt for inconventional better quality decoder.

I'm really sien with iPod already despite the wow factor it offers. I'll be waiting for Sansa View due to the expandability function, if I'm going or MP3 straight.

The price for PSP compare with to a MP3 player really not much. I wonder if I should get it from play-asia.com or from shops; afraid getting those fake batteries and chekai accessories.

I would say. Go for a MP3 player if your main concern is music. Its not much as the sound quality i'm talking about. More on portablity. I own a PSP, but i must say. Using it as a MP3 player is not a good idea. Too bulky. You can just bring it out easily. You have to make sure you have pants with big pockets or other alternative.

A MP3 player is considerably much better for Mp3 playback with the small size. You dont need to worry about where you want to put it while going out.

personally, i think the psp is not good if you are using it as a music player...

ive been using the psp slim for almost 2 months now.
the psp's music player application for me is bad especially in browsing songs.
it takes a long time to browse if youre going to listen a artist that starts with an alphabet that is way back at the end(X,Y,Z),the time it takes is sooo annoying(for me) especially if you have about 300 songs (like me)...

but i always look at the good part of my psp as i mostly use it for games and video watching as it is a multipurpose gadget...in the end nothing is perfect...

PSP still can play back fairy decent sound quality, but with reduced bass level, but at least it doesn't have much noise problem even on higher volume. IMO it's sound quality is on par with listening mp3 on a cybershot phone, not walkman phone cool2.gif

i totally agreed. bringing psp outside really a bad choice doh.gif especially if u wanna make it as a mp3 player.. i have psp and i never bringing my psp outside... i usually wearing jean, where should i put my psp? i'm not a type of person who bring along a bag galas or something...

i think u should consider your need. psp is a great gadget, too many things u can xplore/design if u know about programming and graphic cool.gif ...

I have a PSP and NDSL. I love both, because each of them has the games I want to play.

The PSP is ok for MP3s, but I wouldn't use it as a primary MP3 player. The sound's just so-so.
