Guang Zhou is a very nice places to visit. Back packer are advise to be more carefull because crime rate there is quite high. For who ever who is going, please do it 1 month before or after the Olympic, because normally you wont have room that time anymore, and also thier 10 days labour day off May1-10, dont go during that time smile.gif the airasia time dont simply book ya smile.gif

I will be going there in early Dec.. thumbup.gif Via backpacking style form Macau > Zhuhai >Shenzhen >Hong Kong > Macau

It's good to plan longer period to Pearl river delta (Those cities above) rather than staying at Guanzhou alone...From my research, Guanzhou hv reasonable attractions which actually better than Hong Kong/Macau/Zhuhai/Shenzhen..such as few ancient temples, Sun Yat Sen memorial, Baiyuan mountain & the outskirt include Foo Shan (Wong Fei Hong birth place) & Dongguan (Largest mall in the world -well empty?)...probably more photos by visiting virtualTourist.com

I just came back from China and I stayed in 2 hotels during my stop in GZ for 4 days 3 nights.

Five Rams City Hotel (五羊城酒店)
screw it..one of the worst hotel..it feels like those Jalan Pudu motel..prostitutes walking around..and they freaking shut down the centralised aircon just because the weather has turned cool a little..and it was still freaking 25-28 degree...and there's also offices IN the hotel..right infront of my room it was a freaking optical products supplier office.. rclxub.gif

Furama Hotel (富丽华酒店)
3 star as stated in their website, much better than Five Rams. Decent room...

There's not many interesting place you can go really, for petaling street style shopping there's 2 places you can go.

Shang Xia Jiu Lu (上下九路)
(I'm not the blogger, just that I thought its good coz he has some good pictures and its great that he posted public transport route guide..tongue.gif)
Plenty of shops..cheap cloths and shoes..you can even get a pair of shoes as cheap as RMB19..that's about 10 bucks here. Just browse around there's also a row of shops selling cheap jade jewelry. RMB10 for any set of jewelry...

This is also where I tried my first fried scorpion and fried worm. If you are at the center of Shang Xia Jiu Lu, you may spot a lorong full of food stalls (with a big signboard)..not super delicious but they sells pretty interesting chinese food which we don't see in Malaysia..

Beijing Lu (北京路)
similar to Shang Xia Jiu Lu but sells higher class stuff..you can see MANY sports shops in China..there's a 3 storey Yishion outlet in Beijing Lu as well..
http://www.edwinwang.com/Beijing-Lu-Road-Guangzhou.shtml

Next, for tourist spots
Pearl Delta River (珠江)
there's night river cruise service there, good to take picture but you get pretty bored after awhile..

Bai Yun Shan (白云山)
not much comment

Yuexiu Park (越秀公园)
Dull and boring, just a place with a 5 ram statue to take picture.

Anyang Yin Xu (安阳殷墟博物苑)
A must visit but I missed it. Its known as the 100 greatest archeological discoveries of China. This is where they discover letters and symbols carved on bones and tortoise shells.

Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (中山纪念堂)
Dull and boring as well, I'm not too much of a memorial park person..tongue.gif

Chen Clan Temple/Museum/Academy (陈家祠)
Also known as 陈氏书院 which we have one in KL too but this one is WAY much bigger..a little boring..as usual...

In China there's plenty of tourist spots like memorial hall, or some famous icon's houses which are very similar to each other. Its not advisible to visit more than 2 as they can be very boring because they're very very similar..garden/house structures/pool..everywhere is the same..and of coz..they charges for admission too..

There's more places for you to visit but as I've always said..they're boring and most of them are not worth visiting..just google around..

The best thing about China is the food is cheap..and its season for hairy crab (大闸蟹). .not forgetting their McD grill chicken burger, don't quite remember the english name for it but its really awesome!

good luck!

I was in Guangzhou 'bout 1-2 years back; food's relatively cheap 'cause of the exchange rate. Dollar-to-dollar; it's 'bout the same price or slightly cheaper as our food. The real highlight of Guangzhou I feel; is the food, food and food. Oh right; shopping things are really cheap there as well. I bought a decent loafers for RMB30. Lasted me 6 months only though.

Nothing really much to do in Guangzhou. I visited the botanical garden where they make sculptures out of trees and plants. I think that was really the highlight of Guangzhou as there's nothing really much else there. Most of our time there was spent in touring the other cities like Shenzhen and some other ones whose name elude me now...

I think the zoo in Guangzhou is one of their real attractions. They spent alot of $$$ in doing it up; and it's very apparent. You can even take a train and go smack right through the animal enclosure; gives you the feel of a safari.

Just a rule of thumb though; most of the "tourist attractions" are commercialized and not worth the hype. Try to go for off-the-track ones. I visited a countryside sunflower farm; that was quite nice, but was spoilt by some stupid Chinese typical "commercialization" whereby they tried to turn it into a mini amusement park as well.

The river cruise is not bad; but nothing spectacular. Just lights on a river cruise and it's normally quite packed. The seafood restaurants next to the river though; are really nice. Plenty of interesting things there. Hermit crabs, silkworms, maggots, crocodile head. It's pricey by chinese standards; but affordable due to conversion rate. If you're feeling like splurging lar.

The food in Guangzhou is amazing though. Don't judge the price of a restaurant in China by their appearance. You'll be surprised that those aircond restaurants serve RMB10-15 dishes. And generally; the more packed the restaurant is by locals, the better the food.

Oh right; the weather there fluctuates; but generally it's cooler than in Malaysia lar. I went there during Spring if i'm not mistaken and the average temp was around the 20-24s. Just remember to drink lots of water and Vit Cs 'cause the air quality sucks shit. Viz on a good day is not more than 2kms. However; public transport is really good there. And their LRT system definitely beats ours to a pulp. You can take a bus everywhere. If in doubt however; take a cab. Cabs are cheap there; just make sure they use a meter. They generally do though. It's safer to take a cab than walk; in some places even, due to China mad driving styles. I saw a bus make a U turn from the middle of 4-lane road in the city.

Anyway; be careful with your belongings in Guangzhou and avoid deserted areas as petty crime is high and the police don't bother much.

Hi, has anyone been to Guangzhou and stayed in a reasonably affordable hotel? Are there any hotels which are less than RM100 per night? Or are there any packages where if you were to stay for more than 10 days, a promotional price will be given? rclxms.gif Can Anyone help? icon_question.gif

How long do you plan to stay exactly?

For really mid term stay (like more than one month) there are some special services where people "rent" their apartments for such occasion.
I had to use this in Shenzhen last year when I first arrive, hotel is too expensive for mid term and I personally preferred to have really my "own" place instead of an hotel room.

I am not sure for Guangzhou but I am pretty sure there is such service.

If less than a month, I don't think hotel will bother giving you anything else than maybe a small discount if you negotiate well.

I actually taking the express bus from Zhuhai to Guangzhou. RMB 75/pax. The jopurney took me 2.5hrs due the jam after Pearl river delta bridge. If no jam probably 2hrs.

From Macau probably 2.5-3hrs depending on the jam too

i usually stay at Jia Mei inn at Shang Jiu Lu.
they charge less than RM100 per night and the rooms are quite okay. but you have to ask to see the room before you choose the room. cause sometimes got very strong smoke smell. it's very convenient for me cause you just step out of the hotel and there is shopping left and right. food is all over the place so you wont get hungry also.

Jus got back from GZ. Stayed in Home Inn Hotel Changshou Lu East. This is a chained group. Can booked thru Ctrip.com or elong.com which is cheaper. Got to prebooking otherwise the hotel is fully booked especially furing weekends or whenever GZ is having expo, exhibition or any other events. They have got free bradband in the room. Room & toilet very clean. Got food just outside the hotel street. Walking distance to shangxiajiu pedestrain street. 15 min walk to Metro station. But remember not to choose room 206 if u r sensitive people smoking n they have window however facing a wall of a next building. Bad view.

Pearl delta river cruise must go.Fantastic view at night. just go to Tian zi pier. They schedule for departure.Take approx 1hr 30 min cruise. Just buy bottom deck @ RMB60 n can actually go to their upper deck to take picture. need not sit downstair.Good to have downstairs cos if it rains, u got place to hide.Upper open deck @ RMB70 - The differerence is only titbits .

Shopping area ShangXiaJiu, Beijing Lu (a bit more expensive),Yide lu (wholesale area for dried seafood & herbs)

Food - egg noodle (wan tan mee),dim sum (can go to Shang Xia Jiu - Tao Tao Ju Restaurant. Quite reasonable 4 person - 18 plates of dim sum cost us RMB154.There r 3 floors, therefore u must go all the floors to get yr food.Like buffet. Bring along d card they place on yr table, so tat each time u take food, they will stamp on it..cool ah), cheong fun, soups etc..just eat anything u can find on d street.

Just got back from GuangZhou yesterday morning.
Spend almost RM1.5k on shopping alone. tongue.gif

Stayed at Home Inn Hotel on Shangjiu Lu. Was originally JiaMei Inn but now changed to Home Inn. Clean and comfortable rooms. Price was around RMB200+ for 2 beds room, can fit 4 person. Prices during expo period is at least double. A bit far from subways though. But shopper's paradise. It's located on ShangJiu Lu and just walk down to enjoy ShangXia Jiu Lu. Walking distance to Zhuang Yuan Fang, another shopping paradise, lots of small shops that you can bargain and product quality not bad as well.

We walked to HaiZhu Nan Lu for wholesale shopping and also Yi De Lu for dried seafood. smile.gif
Further up Yi De Lu is Shoe City where all the wholesalers for women shoes are. But most of them don't sell one or two pairs. Have to get like at least 6 pairs to buy from them.

IMO, Tao Tao Ju is overrated.
I like the Cheong Fun & Porridge shop opposite Home Inn Hotel on ShangJiu Lu. Prawn cheong fun cost about RMB10 while porridge some cost RMB5 only. Oh and Pearl Milk Tea is very nice over there! There's also a shop selling Egg Tarts at ShangXia GuangChang. The egg tarts are veryyyyy delicious! I miss them already. tongue.gif

It's my first time flying to Guangzhou, China (the first time I went to China was the time I flew to HK and then went to Shenzhen)

The main purpose of me going there is to find some relatives that I have only met them once in Shenzhen, and I intend to visit my grandfather's "kampung" and their respective tombs...

I've got my Visa, and i'm flying with Tiger Airlines from Changi, Singapore... While my other relatives are flying from KLIA (Airasia)

Arrival time is 15 min later than the 5 other relatives flying with AirAsia...

I would like anyone here to give me tips in China, especially Guangzhou and BaiYun Airport... Since it was my first time going there...

Baiyun is a pretty new airport, and it will cost around 150 RMB to 200 RMB to take cab from airport to city. I don't know about other public transport rate, last time I went there was back in 2008.

2 hours and 15 minutes, you might spent 1 hour to retrieve your luggage (usually won't be so long), and left you have 30 minutes to check in only. And Air Asia now starting to charge for counter check-in, I guess you can do web check-in first in ShenZhen.

My only worry is the airprot being very crowded as National Day holidays has been just over.

Nah, won't be a problem when arriving there. Probably need to allocate more buffer when departing through Bai Yun. The security and immigration process for Bai Yun is incredibly slow, althought not as slow as some airport, the last time I was there, it took a full 1:30 hours from check-in to the boarding area.

The airport is easy to navigate around. Unless you don't know how to speak their language that is. It's pretty simple. If someone is coming to pick you up then thats even better. I don't think you'll have any problems. It's very big so even crowded also not a problem.

Btw, there's a lot of buses to town which is very cheap. I take the bus to town everytime I visit GZ. smile.gif

If there's any train/subway to the city, I would like to know as well.
As far as I know there's none, that's why I'm still taking the buses when I'm there.

The MRT system in Guangzhou is much more advance than KL for sure and wth the addition of the newest line and probably the longest city-to city MRT connecting to Zhuhai which is >120km South of Guanzhou and this MRT max speed at 200km/hr mind you

Any idea how's the ticket price like?
I check the map, the place I usually go to have to change few lines. =.= while if I take bus less hassle. If lots of luggage won't be nice travelling via subway.

Very cheap.

However, if you arrive at Guangzhou station (Guangzhou railway station), the metro station is extremely crowded.

How many days will you be in Guangzhou? If you hv atleast a week or ~ 5-6 days, dun just limit to Guangzhou. Explore further to Shenzhen, Hong Kong or even to Macau.

Around Guangzhou, is not really a relaxing city. It's busy, jam, air pollution & huge. Imagine this should be the largest metro in China if Guangzhou admin area include Foshan, Dongguan & Shenzhen combined together where population of these 4 cities which is not far apart actually already >30million. and if include Hong Kong, Macau & Zhuhai, easily hit >50 million and thus the largest gigantic world metrooilitan area in the world & also much larger than Shanghai & Beijing metro area smile.gif

Anyway you can just google some of guangzhou famous & must attractions. Here one of them:

Wah very high budget...There will be a lot of 5 stars hotel for that rate liao haha..Even their 3 stars hotels only ~ RM80- RM120 haha

Too bad I dun really stay there b4..just spent ~ 1/2 day in Guangzhou last time. Try agoda, booking.com, hotel.com & etc. Otherwise just google & check the best from China hotel website.. One thing good about those chinese website- You no need to prepaid 1st unlike those Internationally wellknown booking websites

behind the hotel is the shangxiajiu pedestrian shopping district, lots of shops (mini malls also)
its about 10 minutes walk to the nearest Guangzhou Metro station

Lazy Tongue,

From GZ Baiyun Airport there is a shuttle bus direct to Foshan. They still operate up until midnight if I am not mistaken. Please check after you leave the Gate.

To go back to Gz from Foshan, you can either take the metro or the bus (Foshan-Gz line - lots of stations depending on where you stay in Gz) if you want to enjoy the city.

Getting from Guangzhou to Shenzhen is one of the most simple thing. Just take the MRT from anywhere to Guanzhou Easy railway stn located North of Tianhe Stadium

Thereafter, just buy the 1hr speed train direct to Shenzhen. Cost ~ RMB75

WARNING - Guangzhou Airport SIM card from China Unicom

There is a China Unicom counter that aggressively hawks SIM cards as you go through in transit. When asked, they said their card will work anywhere in China. It cost RMB100 with only RMB49 usable, and only valid for 3 months, which is far more expensive than others.

I had a few hours layover, so thought what the heck, just get one for use when I get to my destination. They took quite a long time installing it into my phone, and could hear them passing rude remarks about non-Chinese inquirers.

Upon arrival in the other province, I could not make calls and could not send SMS, not even check balance. My local contact took me to a CUni outlet where I was told they have separate admins and could not do anything about it. Finally I got a friend in Guangdong to contact CUni and activate voice calling which was charged as roaming. Sending SMS still was not possible although incoming OK. Balance could be checked only by adding the Guangdong prefix 020 to the system number.

So, it DID somewhat work everywhere in China, BUT.....

going with girl? bring them go 十三行, for a shock of your life but beware that the gals might not come out until they close shop. but they close early anyway, their business start from 6am to 12pm like that lolx

anyway, guangzhou street usually got loads of roadside stalls, while restaurants, all kinds of chinese foods la, Szechuan, hunan, Xinjiang (china muslim) food, etc etc, but of course most is canto food la.

hotel is cheap. the hotel i stayed is east asia hotel, stayed at their refurbish room, i think 1 night only RM150 which is very good. Their old room sux to the max though tongue.gif

there's this kind of transport in guangzhou, a modified motorcycle where the rear can sit 2 people. IMO more dangerous than those tuk tuk in thailand, but i still sit, haha

oh yea....most taxis there are meter taxi, and are cheap compare to malaysia

ahh...work. then different. The air pollution there is bad compare to Malaysia . Mineral water I can't clearly remember, but I think not much different from what you buy at 7-11

public toilets are dirty (well, Malaysia toilet are the same too).

maybe you can be a bit more specific on what you want to know. tongue.gif

I went to Guangzhou earlier this month and was shocked to see the filth at the public toilets there. I must say it is worse than the public toilets in Malaysia. Mineral water is relatively cheap, can get them for a few RMB. And yes - air pollution; be prepared to see very dusty cars there. Also, the air smelled of urine as well and I saw people puking on the streets and children happily using the streets as their public toilets.

Currently there is a long distance MRT line going there from Zhuhai. Location - Unknown. When I went there in 2008, the only option is via express bus from the Bus terminal opposite the border gate (KFC buidong)..

10 rmb per pax is hard to get even I think, when I was in Guangzhou recently, zkungfu and mcd cost almost rmb 20 for 1 set, and that is for lunch.

if we go to more family type of restaurant, it will easily cost rmb 30 per pax.

going with girl? bring them go 十三行, for a shock of your life but beware that the gals might not come out until they close shop. but they close early anyway, their business start from 6am to 12pm like that lolx

anyway, guangzhou street usually got loads of roadside stalls, while restaurants, all kinds of chinese foods la, Szechuan, hunan, Xinjiang (china muslim) food, etc etc, but of course most is canto food la.

hotel is cheap. the hotel i stayed is east asia hotel, stayed at their refurbish room, i think 1 night only RM150 which is very good.

Mind to ask for your east asia hotel which floor is it refurbish? because i check from their website some rooms offer they put 6-7 floor worry the floor are old rooms, check thrue agoda for stay at haizhu square(guess should be shopping area) some of the customer comments rooms are old and dirty.. very worry budget around rm100/120 can go up to rm150 included taxes.. any boutique hotel? or new/cleaner hotel? maybe like tune hotels? @@~

hmm...you need to pay a bit more for refurbish room, around extra RM20 like that per night

i not sure which floor is it , but when book , i choose the one a bit more expansive than the cheapest one

u can choose guangzhou baiyun city hotel, just beside the train station. that one the room is ok . I think if you pay RM150 for a hotel, u can get good clean rooms d (exclude canton fair period where most hotel room price will hike up 100%)

i just come back from a two wks biz trip.. below is some important tip to share.

after i clear the immigration at Baiyun Airport (via Mas), i saw a counter selling sim card and taxi coupon.. was quoted RMB350 to guangzhou city.. then i walk out from the terminal and some guys approach me.. after few minutes negotiate.. the guy agree charged me RMB300, which i tot i save RMB50 (or RM25)... then i follow the guy to his car. but realise that actually he try to delay time bring me walk around the airport and at the end i reach Departure hall.. his friend already stop a taxi and waited for me.. the guy say the fare had been settled.. at that moment i realised i been cheated.. from the taxi driver, i was told i suppose to take the taxi at the arrival hall and only need to Q for the turn.. alll taxi fare is by meter.. the actual cost to my hotel only RMB150.. i had paid RM75 extra...

Lesson learn.. dont talk to stranger and do proper homework..

I managed to get into the queue for taxi during my first time to Guangzhou Baiyun.
Just ask the information counter where to get taxi, she pointed it out right away.
I just walked past all the buses and finally I saw a long line of cab.

2nd time onwards it is no brainer.

just came back from guangzhou.. went there for holidays with wifey and my 4yr old doter.. i am in du ren so it was an adventure as i cant speak/write mandarin/cantonese

but serious homework done from a-z.. hotels prebooked, etc..

day1 - delayed arrival in baiyun about 1am.. stayed in pullman(airport hotel).. walk to the departure hall, 3rd floor, gate 12/13 will be open leading towards the hotel..
*many people tried to confront us and distract us, but we just headed confidently and did not look lost.. even an airport officer tried to tell me pullman is fully booked and tried to distract/divert me..

day2 - checkout pullman.. walk to the mrt metro(line3).. went to a cheaper hotel.. along line3.. got 7-11, kfc, mcd nearby..

day3 - used metro(line3) to chimelong safari park/zoo.. go down to hanxi stop.. take free shuttle to the zoo.. 5star zoo.. see it to believe it.. use same way back.. avoid peak hours for the metro..

day4 - checkout hotel, took metro line3-line8-line2 to the guangzhou south railway station.. took the high speed intercity rail to zhuhai.. 1hr later@190kmh arrived the gongbei port(macau border).. there is a hotel just a road across, L Hotel(china side)..

day5 - took the k10 bus to changlong station(1hr to the last stop), departing bus stop will be underground at the zhuhai port plaza(underground mall), just infront of hotel.. changlong station is where chimelong ocean kingdom is.. ocean kingdom has won 5 guiness world records for its aquarium.. we saw whale sharks, polar bears, etc etc.. go really early, 10am there to get the dolphin and beluga whale shows.. took the same way back home..

day6 - walked over to gongbei port, crossed customs to macau(no need visa).. stayed in the venetian.. from port there are free shuttles..

day7 - free shuttle from hotel to airport.. back home..

tips..
- dun be blurr, sure kena con.. a lot of people will try to approach you if you look lost..
- do extensive homework, agoda, tripadvisor.. most importantly.. use chrome translation feature and surf baidu.com.. baidu map, google map..
- have a small note with key mandarin words, hotels, stations, bus stops.. to show ticket counters, bus drivers..
- we were happy surviving with mcd/kfc and fast food..

Sure why not..Just 1 hr by speed train from GZ Tianhe Speed train stn to Shenzhen & thereafter just walk across to HK from Shenzhen stn.. However, you need multiple VISA & not single entry VISA since you will be entering back to China for the 2nd time.. unless u flying off from HK.

Best Modern Shopping distrcit is South of Tianhe Stadium..Otherwise, there are more if you do more research such as Beijing Lu & etc

Considering Air Asia GO offer of free flight if book hotel, even only if one night! Anybody stayed in those hotels before? Is the AAGo rate reasonably close to walk-in?

(Above on my own, later...) I would like to spend a week wandering around slowly with elderly mother. Can anyone recommend an apartment type place for 2-4 persons, located in the older centre of the city, near metro station?

China Unicom was a problem for me on a previous trip that continued to other parts of China (see my earlier long post). What is the best deal for SIM now? I will need all GD province but not elsewhere.

2yrs ago I went to the Western Han museum. It was small but well presented. And to think the stuff there is HAN - almost 2000 yrs OLDER than the touristy sights in Beijing. Maybe expanded by now.

High speed rail really great, up to BJ or around the coast to Xiamen & even onwards to Shanghai.

you will spend whole day if you are going to safari. canton tower is nice to go during night time. You can take river cruise as well but not sure on the pricing. Baiyun mountains, parks, shamian islands I didnt manage to go last time. But if you are about to go shopping, then you should allocate at least 2 days because the area is widely separated from one another.

Alamak, I thought can visit The Great Wall if I go Guangzhou sad.gif

Looks like I have to re-route my plan.

Original was something like this... 10 days
GZ --> Dongguan--> HK --> Macau --> Zhongshan --> GZ (take flight)

or, is it too idealistic to execute the plan?

Or, should I plan .... go upnorth?

You should put HK and Macau at first. then China at last or all China part at first then HK & Macau at last
Once you leave China you need Visa to re-entry again. Unless you got multi entry China Visa

You no need Tour for Guangzhou.
Guangzhou are fully cover by Subway.

All attraction location are closed to Subway station.

Reason why I need tour is that my parents cannot really walk far, hence the need for a tour so that they don’t have to take subway

Worst, just take those tours package provided by your hotel. If you stay at low-end hotel, normally those 3rd party agent will install a booth/ left some leaflet in the hotel, or hotel will sub all the tour package to their partnership agent.

Else, sometime there some drivers with 7 seaters MPV for you to hire. In China, there always a way! Chinese just too smart in doing business, just scare you dont have money to pay. hehe!

I'm joining a private historical tour to a less visited part of Guangdong with 40+ others, some Westerners. For the part I'm involved, the suggested driver's gratuity is 200 yuan for the two days. Also the same for the guide-interpreter, so 400 total per person. I'm also covering for two young relatives.

Is this amount too much or too little? I have not been on a China tour for over a decade so would appreciate your opinions.

China tour guide or driver no need pay any gratuity.

If per person pay gratuity 200yuan. 40+ person means 8000+.
That's a lot for 2 days of work.

Dear Sifu, want to ask about China visa application in Malaysia.

I understand the documebts required for application. However, I would like to authorise one of family member to apply on behalf of me.

So with regards to this, I couldn’t find any letter of authorisation from the website.

Do I need to provide that letter??

Nope.

Pretty hard to get hotel now, if you haven't book in advance. CAnton fair is one of the major event where a lot of foreigners will visit.

Get a 3 days subway pass to ease your daily commutation.

上下九 is a nice place to visit.

黃埔軍交校 to pay tributes to those who fought the Japanese

夜遊珠江,廣州塔 can carry out in the same night. Get discounts from Taobao

北京路 for high class stuff

及第街 for women's wear

白馬時裝城 is just so so. Better take bullet train to Humen 黃河時裝城,and at the same time can visit 林則徐虎門銷煙遺址. Together with the two museums built on the sites.

No. My family member is doing me a favour since I am unable to take time off to go apply once and collect another day.

In this case, will a simple letter of authorisation will do?? I can draft one myself

Or is there a format but I am unable to find from website

I see. Many thanks for your suggestion.

For accommodation, will you recommend Airbnb instead? I found some decent ones but not too sure how far off compared to hotels.

My main concern is just the cleanliness of the place and the ease of convenience to public transport such as busses and trains.

And if I were to opt for hotel, Is it high likely I am unable to get room?

On the other hand, for the subway card, is it possible to purchase there on the spot at the train station?? Or cheaper to buy here and top up at Guangzhou?

I think as long as you pay, they don't really care.

Unless your application form is filled up by others. Again, who is so stupid to declare even when it is really filled up by others.

If you are going during the Canton fair period, then sorry lah. All good hotels are taken.

I normally stay at 漁珠灣大酒店。Panyu station exit C, walk less than 30m. AT least 4 stars and very cheap. < RMB150 if you book early.

You mean the hotel? It is cheap and nice, and with the subway pass, it is free ride. It is walking distance from 黃埔軍校

20Km + away from the city center, is peanuts. Get yourself a 3 days pass in the subway station will do.

I have only a day starting from early morning for three important sites with a professional group: The two Nanyue Museums, Tomb & Palace and the Chan Academy, catch a bus in the evening to another city, Jiangmen. I believe the fastest is by metro. In what order would you suggest? Is there any time in between for other sights?

No visa required as you'll be transiting. Just go through transit security and there's some sort of immigration check where they'll stamp your boarding pass.
At KLIA you should be checked though all the way to US and will be issued 2 boarding passes.

Hope this helps.

You no need China Visa for doing Transit at China Airport.
BTW, you also can apply 24 Hours Transit Visa Free Program so you can go sightseeing Guangzhou too. if your transit time are long enough.

Traveler should able buy Sim Card by showing Passport.
Aim for those phone shop inside Airport, not those small kiosk / booth.

The Unicom looks pretty convenient except it is in USD$ so about 4 times what the others cost so you've got to really make use of it. Not clear whether it has a local Chinese number and can make direct outgoing voice calls.

My edit: I didn't realize on the web page you can choose a lower cost combo, so maybe only USD$25 1GB data only, USD$28 with voice, which is a little cheaper but not so competitive.

Looks like from "Keep your number" page, there must be a local number. Also you have to pay more to use it after the expiry date.

Unicom mentioned above, probablydoes not give access to Google Facebook, etc.

If you're happy with data only, probably can buy Sim2fly from Lazada or WeFly from Qoo10

There's a Guangdong only one, cheaper, more GB and more days!
