Well since you said it that way

Who was the better captain

I saw one picture when Zola wore an armband so im guessing he was also a captain when he was at Chelsea

If only in terms of character and charisma, definitely Cantona. He started the trend of folding his jersey's collars up (which lead to umbro producing kits will nice collars just for him), chests puffed up, 1-0 winners thanks to him, fancy back heel passes during matches, still got time to show off by balancing or 'timbang' the ball while in a live match, tried to chip the goalkeeper in a friend match with Rangers during a penalty, tried a similar 'Beckham' type long shot from his half to the opponents goal (which sadly hit the bar), and his famous quote "when the seagulls follow the trawler thing...".

Zola is a great player as well. No doubt about that, but if you compare both overall... I think many non-united fans will agree that Eric was better. Sorry to say that.

sorry mate, beg to differ. Cantona's a genius, but Zola is not that far behind. And of course, the famous Frenchman's temperament is always suspect, not like Zola who is forever the true footballer's gentleman.

talking about goals, don't think Cantona did a Zola-esque mid-air jump and back-heel flick for a goal (v Norwich) laugh.gif

but of course, there will always be a debate on who's the better between Cantona and Zola, very much like the Pele v Maradona comparison.

So many different ways that these two player scored. And Zola is not a captain by that time. Desailly was.

Both were equally fantastic players for their respective clubs and trust me, its hard to make a decision of who's better. Due to me being a Red Devil I'm gonna have to be slightly bias and say Cantona was the better player at his prime. Take nothing away from Zola though, I would have accepted him with arms wide open if he'd wanted to sign for us

Agreed that he had a bad temper but after his kungfu kick incident, he has learned to curb it. He even became a peace maker between Cole and West Ham's captain (can't remember his name) during the 95/96 season.

Cantona didn't do that mid air jump back heel flick goal but he did produce some brilliant goals. The chip he scored against Sheff United (fa cup) and again another chip against Southampton.

I think at the end, all United fans will say Cantona and all Chelsea fans will say Zola. Maybe the non-United and non-Chelsea fans can judge better. The results from the poll might show something interesting later.

That poll won't show anything interesting, in my opinion. Mainly because LYN has more Man Utd fans. smile.gif

Nah mate, you lost the title the year before to Leeds Utd, not us smile.gif

In any case, I prefer Cantona as a player but Zola as a person.

But if minus United fans.. there are definitely more non united fans. I think this poll is too general la. Both players are special for a certain reason for each fan. I dunno why this thread was brought up anyway. It's not 100% fair to judge who is the best by this way.

Yeah, but I think what he meant was that Liverpool dominated the league and English football prior to Eric's arrival. And surprise surprise, who was Eric playing when Leeds won the league before that.
