Audio and Video Codec list and removal

If you've ever had issues with a codec and needed to remove it so that you could reinstall it to make it work again you'll want to know where you can find your codec list. In this same place you can usually change settings for the codec and it even has some limited troubleshooting capabilities.

Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Sounds and Audio Devices will bring you to this first image:

user posted image

Here you can see both Audio and Video codecs along with some other things. In this case I'm selecting video codecs and hitting properties then selecting the properties tab:

user posted image

There's all of the codecs that I have installed. I can remove any that I don't want anymore by selecting the codec and hitting remove. By hitting properties I can usually get to additional codec settings if they're supported.

Codec Sniper

Codec Sniper is a tool that shows all of the Directshow, video and audio codecs on your system. There is a column that says whether the codec is "OK", or "Broken". You can delete any codecs that you know are old or that you don't need.

Operating System: Windows 95/98/Me/NT/XP/2000
License: Freeware

how about GSpot? This program can determine the type of codec that the file use. http://gspot.headbands.com or maybe you can google for it. rolleyes.gif

How to (re)install Default Codecs in Windows XP/2000

1. Choose Start > Control Panel and double click Add hardware, then click Next.
Click "Yes, I have already connected the hardware" and click Next.

2. Choose Add a new hardware device at the bottom of the list and click Next.
Select "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)", and click Next.

3. Select "Sound, video and game controllers" from "Common hardware types" list and click Next.
Select "(Standard system devices)" from "Manufacturer" and click Have Disk.

4. Click Browse in the "Install From Disk" dialog box and open the folder C:\Windows\System32
Find mmdriver.inf file, select it and click Open then click OK in the "Install From Disk" dialog box. If you see a warning about logo compatibility, just click "Continue Anyway".

5. Now you should finally see a list of audio codecs. Amongst the other items, you should find Microsoft ADPCM Audio Codec and IMA ADPCM Audio Codec. You need to install them one by one so select either of these and click Next. This should re-install the codec (take care, you may need your Windows XP CD).

6. Reboot

- All default audio codecs are in the same list with Microsoft ADPCM Audio Codec and IMA ADPCM Audio Codec; just go to step 5 and select them.
- If you want to (re)install video codecs go to step 3 Select "(Standard system devices)" from "Manufacturer" and "Video Codecs" from "Model" then follow the instructions.

The following table lists the codecs included with Windows:

TrueSpeech Software Audio Codec
Indeo R3.1 Video Codec
Indeo R3.2 Video Codec
ADPCM Audio Codec
CCITT G.711 A-Law and u-Law Audio Codec
GSM 6.10 Audio Codec
IMA ADPCM Audio Codec
RLE Video Codec
Video 1 Video Codec
Cinepak Video Codec

Get CCCP which is also known as Common Community Codec Pack.

Consist of :
- AC3Filter (Decoding the obvious)
- CoreAAC (Decoding aac audio)
- CoreVorbis (Decoding *drumroll* vorbis audio)
- Haali media splitter (Best splitter out there. It's also updated more often then Gabest's, and author listen to appropriate suggestions)
- OggDS (For your ogm relics)
- VSFilter (For any softsubs)
- Customized ffdshow build (For general mpeg4 playback like lavc/h264)
- Xvid's decoder (For decoding the obvious)

FAQ

Even allows you to play the latest H.264 codec files.

I'm scared to mess up the codec. I just download some free player which has included most of the codec. My personal favorite are
-Media Player Classic (with Real Alternative & Quicktime alternative)
-Zoom Player Professional (not free)
-VLC Player
I have also installed ffdshow & 3ivx (expired already). These are all I need to play 99.9% my of all kinds of movie.

im having a problem playing avi files with my windows media player.

everytime i try to fast forward the video using the bar, it has the tendency to show a windows media player error.

is this normal with avi files? or is there a required codec file to solve this problem of mine?

Greetings,

I had problem playing some .mkv files with my rig, if not mistaken.. last time the problem didnt exist shakehead.gif doh.gif

I'm using K-Lite Mega Codecs Pack 1.38 with Media Player Classic. When I'm playing those .mkv files, it will start but the 'video' rate move very fast like 2x, 4x speed with 'chit chit chit' sound.. after a few seconds, windows will pop-up error and then I'm forced to close it..

I did try to use the Codecs Sniper in the 1st post to check if my codecs is all rite.. but I couldn't execute it.. got error at 'add...' shakehead.gif doh.gif

This is my codecs list after uninstallation of K-Lite Mega Codecs Pack 1.38

*I'm just afraid if my previous codecs didnt uninstalled properly sweat.gif*

ffdshow rocks!
I sometime decode dvd to xvid.
i choose ffdshow becuz it can decode to xvid too.
Before ffdshow, i used the pure xvid codec
now i realize the quality of ffdshow with xvid better, smaller and fast thn the pure one. besides, ffdshow hv everythin and small in size.

Try Storm Codecs. Better compatibility than K-Lite and it include FFDShow and Media Player Classic.

what software you use to encode to mpg, usually the software will show you the codec of the avi file before encoding it to mpg

everyone,i found that k-lite codec pack is great and very nice.i dun find any problem with the codec pack.until now i've never encounter any video file i cannot play.
and for .mp4 its oso known as .aac (is it? i think so). . for some .mkv files u need to download a single ffdshow codec and install as update the pre-existing ffdshow codec.

just install a k-lite codec pack and real alternative pack without having to install the laggy real-one player.i oso installed itunes in my pc,so i got quicktime player...maybe thats the reason for my smooth mpc.
