Hi Masters,
I am planning to purchase an SLR, but I am not sure which is the better option. Currently I have 2 options in mind:
1-Canon 400D+TAMRON SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 -> abt RM4.3k 2-Canon 40D+18-55IS -> abt RM4.6k
The concern with 40d kit 18-55 IS kits lens : I am not sure how good is this? As far as I know the 400d Kit lens is not so convincing.
Could sifus pls advise which shall I get from the options above?
Other options at that budget range can also be considered..
Thanks alot! Wama1go

Wama1go If could afford, pls go to 40D and Tamron 17-50, else there is a lot ppl start throwing 30D in 2nd hand market. I would suggest u either get 30D or 40D.

40D + kit lens user here.
Personally, I think the kit lens is ok but at times, it could frustrating if the object is too near to the lens (even though it is not at all)..

it is better if u can get 40D + 17-50mm.. or if u really have to choose from ur option, i'd definately go for the 400d+17-50mm.. then, sell the 400d for 40d or maybe 30d later on when u finish playing wit it.. from my opinion la, the 17-50m is good becos of the f2.8.. its fast..and shud be good for general occassion (not that i have tried it before) but the IS thingy at 18-55 lens is something that i found not that necessary.. if for tele lens then its ok.. that's my opinion anyway. MP not that important (for me) unless ure printing advertisement banner. but then again, if TS sure got enuff bucks, yea, 40d+f2.8 lens is surely a good buy.

EF-S 18-55 IS is quite good actually. Almost as sharp as 17-55 IS. Here's the link: 18-55 IS http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/ca...556is/index.htm17-55 IS http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/ca...55_28/index.htmTamron 17-50 http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/ta...50_28/index.htm Added on December 4, 2007, 12:55 pmI suggest you go for Tamron 17-50 (RM1350) + 2nd hand 350D/400D (RM1200-RM1700) + 430EX (RM880). This one hell of a setup. You can upgrade the body later and the old 350D/400D still can fetch at least RM1000-RM1500. This post has been edited by altimi: Dec 4 2007, 12:55 PM

If you already got the budjet of Rm4K++, i suggest you get the 40D body only. Then buy a used 18-55 (non IS) kit lens, a lot of people sell this for around RM200. When you have save enough, buy the Tamron 17-50 and dispose the kitlens
If you buy the 400D body now + Tamron 17-50, then suddenly you itchy to upgrade the body to 40D, you'll loose a lot bcoz camera body's depreciate a lot faster than the much more stable price of lenses

Low quality lens + expensive body doesn't makes sense. PLus the newly released 40D price is still on the higher side. Or you can just buy a D80. It got a good lens already...

It got a good lens already... Good idea, 40D*2... And we get D80 I would go for 40D and kit lens since that kit lens have IS. But my choice will be different if that kit don't have IS. Lens quality might be so-so. But if you have the skill, picture quality will be far better. even better than people who use 17-40L but got no skill

Thanks all sifus!
Indeed in some country, 40d kit lens is 17-85IS instead of 18-55IS. Do we have the option to choose which kit lens to bundle along, or it depends on Canon Marketing?
If I have a choice, I think 18-55IS is more worth it due to the huge price difference with 17-85IS. I would rather use the extra 1k+ to get tamron 17-50/2.8.
