agree..
my wife got SPM only...
but now shes Cheif Clerk at Chung & Hasnal Co.
Salary 1800.00
so, why must study to Degree ?????  notworthy.gif
*
without a degree, it's hard for your wife to request higher salary as most company will press down your wife salary.
almost all big company will look for paper qualification when deciding the salary. without it, they will press it very low..

Hmm.. 6K for 6 years exp.. that's pretty good. much higher than average for sys.admin job.
Right now, people with good Unix skills are scarce and they're lot harder to find than MS skills..
I would pay him a premium too.  rclxms.gif  Congrats to shadow111!
*
few month ago, i got a better job which offer me 7k basic.. due to some personal issue, i hv to reject the offer..
but with current situation, it's a bit hard to find such good offer.. cry.gif
i think 6k is not a premium salary.. i do know some niche sys admin like VMS are getting pay like 5 figure in certain company.. drool.gif

most MNC still afford those microsoft/oracle product

what i mean is if the company you interview is looking for open source expert and you qualify for it, you can request for 10k easily as knowledge NOT LUCK that bring you good salary ... malaysia really lack of open source expert
*
ic.. but currently, many malaysia company still a bit kiasu to use those open source app.. maybe wif the current economy situation, more will go for open source.. currently in my company, they are lookin on ways to cut down on the oracle license which cost a bomb for the maintenance/etc.

It's could be the other way round.

The reason companies are looking for open source is because it's cheap or free. Either because they have no money or because they are stingy. So there is no reason why they would pay more money in salaries. In fact, they are more likely to pay less.
*
do u hv any idea how much is the yearly maintenance for oracle license or other enterprise software license? sometimes, the yearly maintenance alone cost like few hundred k... whistling.gif

Yes, I do. Standard Edition? Enterprise Edition? With RAC? Or the numerous options like Partitioning? etc. They are all price differently.

Are you just asking a question, or do you have a point?
*
let say the total cost of the oracle maintenance for company A is 300k per year and now they move to MySQL which is open source. most probably they won't mind to hire someone who is good at this at a premium price since they alrdy save a lot from the maintenance. blush.gif

I know what you are getting at, and it sounds like a reasonable argument.

But in practice, it often doesnt' work that way. If a company makes a move from Oracle to MySQL and this is very very rare, the main driver would be cost savings. Apart from the savings in licensing and maintenance, the added attractiveness is they do not have to pay a premium for Oracle personnel. So, maybe they wouldn't underpay a MySQL person, but I don't think they will be looking to pay a premium.
*
yaya.. i also get yr point.. what can i say, it depends on how the management think.. tongue.gif
btw.. u sound like a dba... blush.gif

Sounds like u guys are in IT support.

IMO, it is difficult to convince some companies migrate to some think like open-source due to these factors:
a) fear of lack of vendor support or backlash
b) fear that apps that work doesn't work anymore - their business will go downhill because of down time.
c) fear that they have to pay more training for Unix/OpenSource skills
b) long term costs not realised yet - savings in maintenance contract or licenses.

Most starter companies (small ones with less than 1mil in capital) are more willing to use open source
than established ones - then of course, then may not pay as well too.

Right now.. MS skills are actually more in demand than Unix but Unix skills command better premium.
*
Well said... rclxms.gif
IMHO MS skills have more demands as wintel servers are quite cheap compare to unix/etc. but nowadays, there are too many wintel admin in the market. even now, unix admin are growing in the market and don't really can command a better pay.. sad.gif
