Hmm.. 6K for 6 years exp.. that's pretty good. much higher than average for sys.admin job.
Right now, people with good Unix skills are scarce and they're lot harder to find than MS skills..

what i mean is if the company you interview is looking for open source expert and you qualify for it, you can request for 10k easily as knowledge NOT LUCK that bring you good salary ... malaysia really lack of open source expert

It's could be the other way round.

The reason companies are looking for open source is because it's cheap or free. Either because they have no money or because they are stingy. So there is no reason why they would pay more money in salaries. In fact, they are more likely to pay less.

Yes, I do. Standard Edition? Enterprise Edition? With RAC? Or the numerous options like Partitioning? etc. They are all price differently.

I know what you are getting at, and it sounds like a reasonable argument.

But in practice, it often doesnt' work that way. If a company makes a move from Oracle to MySQL and this is very very rare, the main driver would be cost savings. Apart from the savings in licensing and maintenance, the added attractiveness is they do not have to pay a premium for Oracle personnel. So, maybe they wouldn't underpay a MySQL person, but I don't think they will be looking to pay a premium.

IMO, it is difficult to convince some companies migrate to some think like open-source due to these factors:
a) fear of lack of vendor support or backlash
b) fear that apps that work doesn't work anymore - their business will go downhill because of down time.
c) fear that they have to pay more training for Unix/OpenSource skills
b) long term costs not realised yet - savings in maintenance contract or licenses.

Most starter companies (small ones with less than 1mil in capital) are more willing to use open source
than established ones - then of course, then may not pay as well too.

Right now.. MS skills are actually more in demand than Unix but Unix skills command better premium.
