My Time Fiber contract is ending and they're not giving me any offer, so my 200mbps plan goes back to RM99/month.

I've used Time Fiber for 5 years, no issues. But recently I came across 5G plans from YES and Umobile and am considering moving to them in a bid to save RM30/month or so.

I am aware that the performance may not be as consistent as home fiber, but the truth is I only use Wifi at home casually on my PC and TV. No serious gaming, even WFH is rare these days.

In general though, on my current Maxis 5G plan, I get minimum 50mbps at peak hours, but usually close to 100mbps.

Should the uHome 5G speeds be better? Even excluding the second ULTRA5G network, is it fair to assume that the router will get better 5G speed than the phone because it has got larger antennas etc?

Also, how are the latest stock routers (especially the Huawei model), compared to aftermarket routers?

Please do share your experiences folks!

I did this. I am already on Umobile 5g for home internet for almost 2 years. It’s good enough for streaming / WFH even.

First issue is on upload speed. I usually get 10-15mbps only. Very difficult if want to upload stuff to cloud.

Second issue is on the 1TB. For me no issue. But if more pax at home ma be an issue

Third issue is torrent. Unable to torrent with Umobile 5G. Have to use VPN. If torrent important. Go with yes 5g. But I hate yes.

Final issue is the 5g network now of days. The past 2 years I been getting 400-500mbps but recently with the “U ultra5g”, I’m getting 100-150mbps. I think Umobile did something.. not related to dnb vs Umobile own 5g because maxis also same issue. The signal also poorer now.

But all in all. I find our fiber is too expensive. This is good enough for me.

I bought my own router nr5103 three from UK (can buy in shopee) since Umobile router will be locked contract for 2 years. Then I link it to my old mesh wifi.

Now maybe there’s better routers but this works well for me.

No point trying to get the Umobile router also. Next time can’t sell since it’s locked to Umobile I think….

5G NSA. I not sure if now we are using 5G SA already or not.

Just an info. Uhome 5G is unlocked to any 5G routers but if you take mobile plans like Ufamily 98/128, it will block 4g / 5g routers. (I tried)

You try submit application to cut your TIME fibre. Pretty sure they'll come back with promo

It's already cut and I also called them just to check. Memang none.

I also surprised they don't bother to retain, maybe cause I'm on the cheapest plan.

RM30 per month is RM30*12=360 per year.
720 for 2 years. It adds up all these small recurring costs…

If including 8% SST that’s 720*1.08=777.6 for 2 years

For you is small money maybe someone else is significant….

I am using the ZTE router , many users claimed that it was a lousy router.

I think UM have upgraded it cause I can choose between Only 4G/4G+ or 5GSA/5G4G or 5G non SA

going strong for 12 mths ady

btw, only uHome 5G sim plan can be use with the supplied router, other UM plans like postpaid also cant use with that router , quota is 1TB/mth

How is the ZTE router performance, any stability issues?

Router not much issue cause there are tweaks parameters but the network is the biggest issue.

sometimes you get Ultra5G which is fast , at times lousy 5G which is worst than 4G+

but overall with the rm68/mth [ rm71.xx with SST ] why wanna complain and they throw in a free router if tied to a 24mths contract.

last time I was on unifi rm89 , 100mbps , waited 24mths terus potong and use this um5g home that I can bring to many places that I go stay around , its Mobility beats landed fibre

Always buy a sim to check your place's speed first
If speed is good thn you can proceed

I'm now already using u home 5G for all my internet, when I go out, the sim card comes with me

Sim card comes with you but not the device?

Also, my logic is that my Maxis 5G on my phone is using DNB which is same as Umobile. ULTRA5G meanwhile can only be better (a plus). So do I really need to test a Umobile sim?

Why would the device comes with me when my phone is dual sim?

It's not about which Telco or ultra5G...it's to check your house position can receive the transmission well or not first
Your house has to be facing the tower...wall and corner is bad for 5G due to their short transmission, unlike 4G
Basically meaning where you stand has to have a clear view of the tower else that will start decreasing your speed

It's always better to buy a sim card and confirm yourself instead of locking yourself for 2 years
Or no contract and buy your own router

Like my place is facing east but the towert is at north
So it has to penetrate some walls to reach me
I need to buy a router that has snapdragon chip to resolve my speed issue
I would say snapdragon and mediatek chip are the best magnet for 5G

this is because more & more people slice the 5G cake as higher & higer adoption rate.
this is something that only can be solved by faster fiber infra rollout, which seems like not happening soon.
so expect speed gonna get lower by time.

when the 5G router is foc , i wont mind to get tied to a 24mths contract if I can get consistent speed of 20mbps & I can bring it to everywhere I go , hence I am not tied to fibre which also is contracted . my current contract have abt 12mths to go , once its over, I will terminate it & tied another contract , this time maybe I will try Maxis as they are also providing free 5G router or stay with UM & get another router as spare or sell it off for a small profit

It is free with 24 month contract
But at the same time none of the router they give is using any of the 2 chipset

So give or take

The best part about using uhome 5G is that it's a moving fiber
U plug it into your phone..you can get fantastic speed everywhere

when you use your fon to share out its internet , lets say 300gb/mth , how long you think that chip in the fon can last , considering the heat generated & battery's life span

ya, btw what fon is yours and what is its average 5G speed ?

I'm not worrying how long it lasted
I care more about what speed I can get which is why I mentioned the chipset
I don't use snapdragon, my phone uses mediatek
My umobile uses unicom
So I bought a router that uses snapdragon

And that's how I know snapdragon is a 5G signal magnet followed by mediatek

using 3rd party modded modem. modem placement matters alot.

speed fluctuate around 300-400mbps on average. upto 800mbps on midnight-early morning. 8pm peak hour speed may fluctuate a lot.

take that as you will

On my S25, when I insert the sim, on the top left hand corner it says U Mobile. So I suppose it is DNB network?

Makes sense cause Maxis 5g on my phone is also around 200-300mbps today.

The problematic one is the older 888s (rectangular shape). Newer one is the tower model which is similar to the 801A that Celcom gave when I was contracted to them last time.

in simple term = yes
but the more correct way is to use app to see what "mhz" you're on

but for the sake of peace of mind, just refer U mobile = DNB, ultra 5G = 2nd 5G network lah

Interestingly, both the Uhome 5g and Maxis 5g sim gets around 150-200mbps on my phone, but when doing speedtest on my phone via Wifi using the same Uhome 5g sim placed in the Umobile router, the speed is consistently around 300mbps.

Is it because the router is able to absorb the signal more strongly?

So the Chipset in the Huawei H155-383 router is more powerful than the chipset in the S25? I suppose it makes sense sinc the routers sole purpose is to capture 4g and 5g signal and transmit it as wifi
