My company seeing record hardware sales this year. A lot of customers giving up on VM and moving back to hardware instead. Trend reversed from 10 years ago when people started migrating to VMs and started giving up hardware.

Too lazy to foruming these days so just post AI summary why I hate VMware post-Broadcom and Broadcom in general.

The general complaints about Broadcom's acquisition of Symantec's Enterprise Security Business (and CA Technologies) before VMware largely follow a consistent pattern focused on aggressive cost-cutting and a shift in business strategy that disadvantaged smaller customers and partners.
The major complaints centered on three core areas:
💰 Pricing and Licensing
The most significant and consistent complaint across all of Broadcom's software acquisitions, including Symantec, was the immediate and dramatic change to pricing and licensing models.
* Drastic Price Increases: Customers reported massive price hikes, with anecdotal reports ranging from 82% up to several hundred percent for renewals and new contracts.
* Forced Bundling: Customers were often forced to buy products in large bundles (SKUs) that included software they did not want or need (sometimes called "shelfware") to retain access to the core, essential products.
* End of Perpetual Licenses: Broadcom shifted the models from the acquired companies' traditional perpetual licenses to more expensive, mandatory subscription-based models.
🎯 Customer and Partner Focus
A key part of the Broadcom playbook is to rationalize the customer base, which created significant disruption for many legacy users.
* Focus on Global 2000: Broadcom explicitly stated a strategy to focus only on the largest enterprises (the Global 2000 accounts), which make up a core, "sticky" customer base.
* Alienation of Mid-Market/SMBs: This shift left the commercial, mid-market, and smaller customers feeling abandoned, with reports of their accounts no longer being valued, their dedicated sales reps being eliminated, and being told their accounts would essentially be allowed to "churn out" of the business.
* Channel Disruption: The number of channel partners and resellers was drastically reduced, and many larger accounts were moved to direct sales, damaging the relationship ecosystem that customers relied on for support and integration.
📉 Innovation and Support
The aggressive cost-cutting that followed the acquisitions led directly to a decline in service quality and product momentum.
* Diminished Support: Customers reported a significant drop in customer service and technical support quality, with less responsive service and the elimination of knowledgeable support staff following layoffs. For some Symantec customers, support experience went "from bad to worse."
* Reduced R&D Investment: Broadcom implemented deep cuts in Research and Development (R&D) spending (e.g., a reported 40% cut at the Symantec Enterprise Security business). This led to concerns about stalled development, slower innovation, and the eventual end-of-life for non-core products that customers depended on.
* Layoffs and Brain Drain: Massive post-acquisition layoffs led to the departure of institutional knowledge and technical talent (referred to as "brain drain"), further impacting the quality of support and future product development.

when finance and business guy have more say than tech ppl in tech solution/product (software or hardware), then you know what will be the eventual outcome. innovation will suffer, because R&D is a money pitt, business and finance ppl won't have the technical capacity to envision result and impact. they only look at it as an uncertain money "black hole". eventually, they will just acquired other company with establish patent and use it/commercialize it rather than doing it themself.

shcool and universities should just use linux really and contribute to the open source comunity also... people nowadays, say tech savy, even 7 year old can code. but how many can actually contribute to stable operating system.

really respect the creator of linux, it is really something phenomenon and go against all the business rules and it still able to survive and thrill until today..

After the AWS incident, business folks realised their business is at the mercy cloud, and not cheap also to host due many variables (not just from OPEX, but other non cost related).

Hence the reverse.

VMware may be selling software but people buy it cause of their service. Without people to service the customer, people will be less inclined to buy.

I always thought it was stupid. Ironically, my career here was built on the virtual platform because I was hired to virtualised the functionality that they previously sold as a add-on hardware accelerator. Actually, it was great for the company because customers could try the software version and then started buying licenses for it. Even now that they are moving back to hardware platforms, they will still be using the software version rather than a add-on hardware accelerator, which has been discontinued.

No, our customers a lot doing self-hosting due to sensitive data. Just recently, a couple of big ones started ordering lots of new hardware from us. We can't get enough chips for our platforms.

that is how finance and business ppl do stuff, they do not develop a product/own solution to sell. they buy ready made business/solution and make it theirs.

just like this.

Proxmox is pretty good if you're willing to learn how to configure/harden/manage with mostly documentation and forum help, not sure how resilient it is for production though, it has Ceph storage, but I'm not really knowledgeable about that part. Not sure if there's anyone in Malaysia that offers proxmox support for on-prem deployments.

I don't really know much about hyper-v outside of using it to run a linux vm that's not wsl on my work computer. It has issues with running some desktop environments that aren't common, like Cosmic DE, that's about the only thing notable I know.

it's a dog eat dog world

i know one CEO kena like this

he removed anyone he doesnt like by asking them to resign. Some of them are the best performers who couldn't get along with him or constantly disagree with him. Surprise that no one complained him to Labour Office

few years later, he was removed from office by the board instead.

It's all business.

This type of news also attract so many racist remarks. When a white CEO does a restructure it was normal.
