Just curious if there is anyone here receiving spam calls from unknown individuals. Sometimes the calls are local, sometimes they are from another country. Earlier today I received another spam call. After I pressed the button on my phone to receive the call, the person who made the call hung up. Below is a snapshot of the caller.

I was just wondering if there is any danger of unknown people or strangers calling, if they are able to gain access to bank details stored inside the phone. The phone rings, and when you pick up the call the person who made the call ends the call.

Most likely just testing whether your number is active or not

Edit: And no, they can't get your bank password, unless you go and simply install APKs. Nowadays banking need secure approval via bank app

Thanks for the response. I wonder what is the purpose of testing the number to see if it's working. At least stay on the line and not hang up once the person on the line receives the calls. Sometimes there are people who stay on the line, and from the conversation one would know that they are scammers, individuals representing a company but calling from a mobile number. During these instances it would be me hanging up.

They are filtering out potential victims. Those that answers the call and reply..they will sell ur phone number to actual scammers.

Right, and what do actual scammers do? The same thing as what these initial scammers are doing but instead of hanging up the call they will stay on the line and speak with their potential victims?

Ok thanks for the information. Hopefully the authorities will nab the head or mastermind of these scammers and put a stop to all this nuisance.

Just out of curiosity, is there any place where people can report these scam callers with information on the numbers they are calling from, apart from blocking them on the mobile phone?

Just lately in the news, some Chinese and Japanese scammers were caught with their act. It was on TV several days ago if I'm not mistaken on TV3 as they are all handcuffed by the police with some people blocking their faces with their shirt. I'm sure there are many more of these scammers which are still out there.

But last time, there are news that scammer call, victim answer phone and chat a while, then say scammer behind the line can overide phone to access SMS OTP.
Is this still applicable nowadays? I know banking apps use app token, but certain website/account still use SMS /whatsapp OTP.

sometimes it's because these scam calls are automated

they use a machine-like to spam calls on a lists of numbers they have on standby

I also have been getting calls on one of my numbers, they sure are very persistent, calling almost 1 time every hour last week, I didn't pick up the call of course because I knew these are scam calls. But thank god the spam calls only lasted a week. Oh yeah I might be filing a report to MCMC as well that I received spam calls sooner or later.

They work in a large consortium / gangs / groups. Sharing potential victim details. Testing future victim number.

Simply don't answer the call. I NEVER pick up any call that shows number, unless I'm expecting something such as incoming courier delivery, etc.

U can report their numbers but realistically don't expect the authorities to do much. At most, they just arrest a few low level goons for show but never the mastermind.

If the authorities really.wanted to put a.stop to this, they can easily start with arresting those owners of the numbers used & don't care whether they are involved or.just mules. Charge them in court so that people will think twice before renting out their ic to register new lines.

By right, the proposed 2 numbers per telco for locals should actually be max 2 only & anymore numbers needed must heavily scrutinised with documents needed & can only apply at large telco sc. Seriously, why would normal person need more than 2 for personal use?

Unfortunately this is a worldwide problem & if u go to scam reddit plenty of people from USA, UK report similar scams.

Only thing we can do on our end is to keep.up.to date with their mo & be wary in nature.

I.am.not a expert & while it.may be plausible as honestly. Anything manmade can be crack open but this is mission impossible type of skills & resources needed.

I doubt scammers are going to waste that much time, effort & money to hack into any random bank account hoping to score big. They would need your bank login credentials, email as well unless your phone is compromised with malware. Otp alone is useless if they can't access your bank accounts.

Not saying it can't happen but unless u are Warren buffets, the scammer isn't simply going to spend that resources on a random person. They are cheaper ways to scam a nobody.

One thing we should do is to.keep a low profile & don't act like those baru kaya types want to show off especially on social.media.

Got one sohai ktard years back record his father cimb account want to show off on lowyat pretend the money is his. Kena kantoi by mother screaming at him in video asking what is he up to. Seriously, no one gives a damn about your wealth status.

Those who do give a damn are typically con artists & so called friends trying to.mooch of you.

Another info from mcmc thru tiktok, the silent call basically to record the voice who ever pick up the call, it only took them 3 secs to get it, use it as ai voice to scam people thru call 😔🐝🐞👍

Telemarketer will have a long pause until your first hello, then they will start their pitch - insurance or whatnot. Scammer will quickly start the call with hello and spewing all your personal information.

Register another like for bank use.

My primary number is mostly for work.

Socmed or banking I used different numbers on a separate phone. On these phones, all calls are blocked. No incoming or outgoing possible.

A scammer would try to call but it won't go through.

Just don't click any links and don't give them any bank / credit card details
