GEORGE TOWN: Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo has defended his actions after a video clip went viral showing him angry with some contractors tasked with pruning a few trees in Mount Pleasure.
Explaining his side of the story, Jagdeep said both sides of the main thoroughfare were blocked by two large cranes, which caused thousands of residents in the two nearby blocks of Sea Range Tower and Seaview Garden to be stranded.
"I had frustrated citizens who called my office to voice their grievances with me and an angry lady who lodged her complaint to me in person in Komtar.
"As an elected representative, it is my duty to voice out when the people's daily lives are affected.
"I also apologise on behalf of the state for the inconvenience caused to the residents. We will ensure this will not recur," he said in a Facebook posting.
Jagdeep said, while the closure was necessary to ensure the smooth and safe execution of the scheduled works, the impact on traffic flow and daily movement of the public was not acknowledged.
"Imagine the inconvenience and danger posed to the elderly folks and children who had no choice but to walk along the hilly path either to leave or to reach their homes.
"I know, because my two youngest children were among them when my wife could not even leave the house to fetch them back from school.
"How about the others, especially the elderly folks? What if there's an emergency and the ambulance cannot access the road to reach the victim?"
Yesterday, a video of a verbal exchange between Jagdeep and several workers involved in tree pruning went viral.
It was unclear what was said by Jagdeep and the workers.
However, at one point, a worker could be heard saying:
"We have dignity. You get out. We are not dogs. We are human."
The Penang Island City Council had recently announced on its Facebook page that it would be carrying out tree maintenance works along Jalan Tanjung Bungah and Jalan Batu Ferringhi.
The work is expected to be completed on Dec 7, taking place from 9am to 12.30pm and continuing from 2pm to 4.30pm.
The city council advised road users to follow the instructions of traffic signs and flag officers on duty.
