Perodua QV-E battery sold separately? Here’s what you need to know about the EV battery leasing plan

Marking a new era in the company’s 32-year history, Perodua has officially launched its first-ever fully electric model, the QV-E, which stands for “Quest for Visionary Electric Vehicle,”. Priced at RM80,000, many were shocked that the said price tag is not inclusive of the battery.
Instead, customers must sign up for the Perodua QV-E Battery Leasing Plan (yes, that’s the official name) if they wish to purchase the EV. At the moment, you are not able to purchase QV-E with a battery outright.
The battery leasing model, or as Perodua calls it, Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS), is something that the national automaker has confirmed since earlier this year. That still didn’t stop many from feeling baffled about it – so, here we are to provide some clarity regarding the Perodua QV-E Battery Leasing Plan.
How much do I need to pay for Perodua QV-E battery
Under the Shariah-compliant Perodua QV-E Battery Leasing Plan, customers have to pay RM275 per month for 9 years (108 months). According to the product disclosure sheet, which you can obtain through the P-Circle super app, the payment generally must be made on or before the 5th day of the month.
However, that rate mentioned above does not include the 8% Sales & Service Tax (SST). Once you consider SST, the final amount would be RM297 per month. With that, the total monthly payment over a period of 9 years is RM32,076.
Do I need to pay for the battery separately to Perodua?
No, you don’t have to because there is the Integrated Payment with Vehicle Financing method via participating financial institutions. Under this payment method, the battery’s monthly fee is combined with your car’s monthly instalment to form a single monthly payment.
Perodua and the participating financial institutions will separate the payment behind the scenes. If your QV-EV financing tenure is less than 9 years, you can pay the monthly battery leasing fee directly to Perodua via the P-Circle super app or approved payment channels.
There’s an upfront payment involved in the leasing plan
Surprise, surprise – the product disclosure sheet for the Perodua QV-E Battery Leasing Plan said that customers have to pay 3 months’ worth of the monthly fee before they receive their new QV-E. That is equivalent to RM891, inclusive of the 8% SST.
The disclosure sheet noted that the upfront lease payment is meant to cover your final 3 months of leasing or to pay any due and outstanding payment if you terminate the contract early. The upfront payment might also be used to offset any gap before your first vehicle financing instalment under the Integrated Payment with Vehicle Financing method starts.
When can I get my QV-E’s battery exchanged for free?
At any point during the 9-year leasing period, Perodua will replace the battery on your QVE for free if its State of Health (SoH) falls BELOW 70%. This is provided that you didn’t owe Perodua any outstanding monthly fee.
Do I get to own QV-E’s battery after 9 years?
You might be surprised, but the answer is NO. This is because the battery belonged to Perodua….forever.
You will have two main options at this juncture:
If the battery’s SoH falls BELOW 70%, you can opt for a new battery from Perodua. However, you have to sign up for a new 9-year contract.
If the battery’s SoH is still ABOVE 70%, you can continue using it, and there is no need for you to pay a monthly fee for the battery anymore.
If you decided to sell off the QV-E, you can only do it through Perodua Pre-Owned Vehicles (POV) platform.
So, I can’t sell through other platforms?
That’s correct. You can only sell the QV-E through the POV platform, which is one of the ways that Perodua ensure the resale value of its EV will not suffer as much as what we encounter within Malaysia’s EV market at the moment.
What if I want to sell my car before the 9-year battery leasing period is up?
Customers are free to sell their QV-E even before the 9-year battery leasing period is up, but of course, they need to ensure that they have fully paid the vehicle instalment to the bank.
When they sell the EV to another party through POV, the new owner can decide whether to continue the remaining battery leasing period of the previous owner or sign up for a fresh 9-year lease plan and get a new battery for the car.
What will happen if I miss the payment for the battery?]
For starters, Perodua will disable the vehicle’s start function or battery operation. This will happen if you miss your payment for 2 months.
If you continue to miss the payment for another month (so, that’s 3 months of missed payments in total), the lease agreement will then be terminated. Once that happens, Perodua is going to locate your car and recover the battery within 14 days.
You have to make sure that the battery remains in the car, or Perodua is going to claim the cost of the recovery process, which includes towing, storage, or any related transportation charges from you if they have to recover the battery separately from the car.
Not to forget, there is also the compensation fee of 1% per year for any late or missed monthly payment. In the case of a terminated lease, the compensation fee will be imposed on any due and outstanding amount until Perodua manages to recover the battery.
What are other scenarios that may result in lease termination?
Well, there are quite a number of scenarios that can lead to lease termination and may require Perodua to recover the battery from your QVE. Here’s the list:
- Total loss of the vehicle in an accident.
- Theft.
- Repossessed by banks.
- Vehicle/battery sale.
- Ownership transfer.
- Failure to uphold your obligations under the battery lease agreement.
- Legal proceedings that affect your ability to pay, such as bankruptcy.
- 4 successive missed payments by the next of kin of a deceased owner
Can I use QV-E for e-hailing (Grab, Bolt, etc)?
NO, you can’t use the QV-E for e-hailing. Doing so will not only breach your battery lease agreement, but it will also void the warranty of your QV-E.
This was clearly stated in the car’s warranty booklet. Aside from e-hailing, you also cannot use it for delivery (such as Lalamove, Grab Food) and commercial services.
Why did Perodua decide to implement BaaS for QV-E?
During the making of QV-E, Perodua has conducted some surveys to learn about the key pain points of EV ownership and among those that were high on the list is the cost of EV battery replacement.
Even though the price for EV batteries is expected to reduce significantly down the road, while current statistics showed that even EVs with older battery tech are still running fine, the BaaS generally ensures that this issue will not bug QV-E owners at all. Of course, that is as long as customers remain committed to the leasing program.
Another concern that Perodua aim to address with BaaS is proper battery disposal, which is why the company retain the ownership of the battery. While things are still in their infancy, the company have already begun the necessary work to help develop battery repurpose and recycling ecosystem in Malaysia, according to Perodua’s President and CEO, Zainal Abidin Ahmad, during QV-E’s pre-launch media briefing.
At the same time, there are also other factors in play, such as helping reduce the On-The-Road (OTR) pricing to ease the path for consumers to adopt EVs. Not to forget, the BaaS is also meant to help maintain resale value.
