KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 21): The two sons of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad have together declared assets worth RM1.2 billion to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.
Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir declared
more than RM1 billion of assets and
his elder brother Mirzan Mahathir about RM246 million,
the news service reported citing MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki at a briefing.
“Investigations into them are still ongoing, although the asset declaration is completed,” Azam was quoted as saying.
In June 2024, Mokhzani stepped down as the non-executive chairman of Maxis Bhd (KL:MAXIS) after 15 years sitting on the board of the company.
He served as a director of Maxis since its relisting on Bursa Malaysia in 2009, and as the chairman of the board since April 22, 2021.
Mr Mokhzani Mahathir was granted a 30-day extension to declare his assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Tuesday (Feb 20), Malaysian online news portal Scoop reported. Mr Mokhzani’s older brother, Mr Mirzan Mahathir, was granted the same extension on Feb 16.
News of the extensions follow Dr Mahathir’s admission to Malaysia’s National Heart Institute (IJN) on Jan 26 and ensuing rumours that the 98-year-old was in critical condition.
Providing an update to the media on Tuesday, an aide of Dr Mahathir’s said in a WhatsApp group: “Dr M is currently still being treated and is in the process of recovering from (an) infection.”
The Panama Papers are 11.5 million leaked documents that were published in 2016.
They detailed financial and attorney-client information for more than 214,488 offshore entities.
The Pandora Papers, on the other hand, are a 2021
leak of nearly 12 million documents that incriminated hundreds of global elite for alleged tax avoidance and corruption.
