My car us using old type of handbrake. Even if I directly shift from D to P after stopping and then apply handbrake, the parking pawl does not make grinding sound when I next shift to R on the next drive - unless parked on sloping road. Even then, it only grinds if I don't pull the handbrake hard enough.

TS, does it happen all the time?
