The death of a Taiwanese influencer at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur has inadvertently led to controversial rapper Namewee landing in the dock facing drug charges.
According to media reports, the rapper, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, had met up with Hsieh Yu-hsin at a hotel to discuss a collaboration.
A police statement placed the day of the meeting on Oct 22.
Sin Chew Daily reported that during the meeting, Hsieh (above, left), also known as Iris, had gone to take a shower but did not come out, with Wee later finding her dead in the bathtub.
Wee was also reported to have called the emergency hotline at 12.30pm.
He was then said to have gone to the hotel lobby, where police happened to be stationed and the officer later escorted him back to his room.
Tested positive for drugs
Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus, in a statement today, said police had conducted a search in the room and found nine pills suspected to be ecstasy.
Wee was brought to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters, where he was subjected to a urine test - which was positive for amphetamines, meth, ketamine, and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
The rapper was remanded for two days and subsequently charged with drug possession and use on Oct 24.
Wee claimed trial to the charges and is scheduled to appear in court again on Dec 18.
In a statement posted on Instagram last night, Wee, in response to news of his arrest, denied using drugs while admitting to heavy drinking.
He also claimed to have been subjected to blackmail and vowed to fight to the "bitter end".
Hsieh's cause of death has yet to be confirmed.
Initially, Taiwanese media quoted her manager as saying she had died of a heart attack.
