I had often stood by my durian trees enjoying the sweet aroma of the flowers. With a light turned down low, I could see the bats coming to feast on the nectar, and doing pollination work for free. Their senses are very highly tuned. If a bunch of durian flowers had already been visited by early-comers, the newcomers would just take a passing sniff, then head off to find other flowers...no need to have a taste to discover that the nectar there was gone.

As for the insect-eating variety of bats, I just have to stand still and they'd flit around me, snapping up the mosquitos that were singing close to my ears. Being very agile flyers, at the most I'd feel a soft wingtip slightly brush against my cheeks and shoulders.
