Someone I know needed to do Spinal fusion / spinal instrumentation where screws and rods are inserted in the spine. Anyone has done that can share your experience? Did it help in fixing your problem? Any side effect? How long did it take to recover? Was it very painful?

QUOTE(Sichiri @ Oct 1 2025, 05:13 PM) Yah. That is good advice. I still want to know more info so my friend can be mentally prepared. I want to get a patient’s perspective/experience.

QUOTE(abm @ Oct 1 2025, 05:45 PM) Would your friend rather not do the surgery and live with a broken spine? I don't think your friend have an option here

QUOTE(abm @ Oct 1 2025, 05:45 PM) spinal fusion and instrumentation is a lot more common than you think. people went for even major spine surgery like scoliosis correction - can return to normal function. probably will need some life style modification and take extra precaution, stick to follow up plan, physio and whatnot. the most important thing is to communicate with the treating doctor.

Good luck.

Someone i know done 2 spinal fusion, one at cervical and another one at lumbar... First operation for cervical, quite successful, reduce around 80-90% of pain, but for the lumbar not quite successful with maybe around 30% of pain reduction
But she was also diagnosed with fibromyalgia, so maybe that what cause her pain not reduce as much..
As for recovery time, I cant remember but AFAIK u can do minor house chores a few days after discharge

I want to get a patient’s perspective/experience. after the surgery it is pain....very pain. Doc will give painkiller aka morphine. the pain subsides in 2-3 days. Some ppl can sit up and walk abit 5days after the surgery. Some can't and takes longer period like maybe 2 weeks. Some ppl can't walk properly and needs to do physiotherapy. Overall takes 2-3 months to recover.
