Malaysia is situated outside earthquake zone but we are not free from tremors. I think Malaysian building bylaws in general does have limited scope on seismic loading but limited to loadbearing structures.
However I think approvals is on a case to case basis depending on the topography like KLCC which had extra provisions for earthquakes. Don't think it is applicable on other scopes of works.

https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2025...ourth-in-a-week5 earthquakes in 5 days. Segamat residents must be badly "shaken". Luckily, there are not many tall buildings, so any resulting damages to property are likely limited. Still, I think it will no doubt affect property prices. Just wonder what will it be like if the shaking happens closer to KL, Penang and JB.

One or two-storey buildings are still not too bad if there are minor earthquakes. It's high-rise buildings which pose a much greater risk. So far I don't think there are major earthquakes in Malaysia which caused fatality (touch wood) as it's mostly just cracks on buildings. People living in low-rise buildings may still have time to run out to safety, but not people living in high rise buildings.
I heard rumours that people in Singapore are getting some phobia about the earthquakes in Johor now since most of them are living in high-rise buildings, though I'm not sure if the buildings have included some earthquake resistant codes. Most buildings in Malaysia have not included earthquakes in the design mainly due to cost.

Just imagine if we're to happen around JB....
Really GG...
Our building cannot withstand all these earthquakes....

Just read an article on The Star online whereby the Fire department recommends that people stay indoors and do not run outside of the building during a tremor. I presume this is likely workable if a minor tremor which is anticipated in Malaysia? If it's major where buildings are at risk of collapse, it may be better to run out of the building. https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/202...n-a-week/189353Getting more scary. It's almost like a daily affair. Hopefully, the shaking will stop soon enough for Segamat living to return to normal.
