One or two-storey buildings are still not too bad if there are minor earthquakes. It's high-rise buildings which pose a much greater risk. So far I don't think there are major earthquakes in Malaysia which caused fatality (touch wood) as it's mostly just cracks on buildings. People living in low-rise buildings may still have time to run out to safety, but not people living in high rise buildings.

I heard rumours that people in Singapore are getting some phobia about the earthquakes in Johor now since most of them are living in high-rise buildings, though I'm not sure if the buildings have included some earthquake resistant codes. Most buildings in Malaysia have not included earthquakes in the design mainly due to cost.

Crack could be structural and unsafe to live in.

minor shake, nothing to worry

No one could control or predict the nature.

It seems to be "migrating"; closer to Melaka where there are more high rise buildings than Segamat

Hundreds were feared dead and injured in a magnitude-6 earthquake that struck Afghanistan's rugged northeastern province of Kunar, authorities said on Monday, as rescuers combed the rubble of homes in a hunt for survivors.

Earthquake risks is not limited to high rise only.

Yes, structural cracks could be unsafe and will require repairs though architectural cracks would not be any issue. Evaluation by the experts would be necessary.

I'm not entirely sure but so far I don't think there are cases of earthquakes in Malaysia causing major damage which requires extensive repairs. The most recent one is the gas explosion at Putra Heights but that's a man-made disaster instead of earthquakes which are essentially a natural disaster.

I work at the 5th floor. I see cracks along the walls outside of my office.

The earthquake in Afghanistan happened in a remote area in the mountains where deaths are mainly caused by landslide as the mudbrick houses are either along or below the slopes of the mountains. Rescue is difficult or almost impossible as reported in the news as there is no proper infrastructure or access roads. It's different from big cities where various buildings and high-rise are located.

Is your office in areas where the earthquake happened?

Don't think that way and be more positive. smile.gif I too live in a high-rise. I know how everyone would feel right now with the recent earthquakes in Malaysia but let's be hopeful and optimistic that everything will be fine. As I have mentioned previously, there is no history of earthquakes in Malaysia causing fatality as it's all minor tremors, but anyone can correct me if I'm wrong. Let just hope that if there are earthquake tremors in the future (touch wood), it will be minor and won't bring any major impact to buildings or the people.

Most cracks on outside of building walls are architectural cracks which can be ascertained through investigation but most don't bother.

Severity of earthquake is one matter, building able to withstand is another matter.

Report of another earthquake, albeit minor in Segamat! Never used to hearing earthquake reports so frequently.
